...Meditation Meditation is the state achieved from intense concentration on a single object until all other thoughts vanish and all that is left is an intense awareness of the object and nothing else is there in mind for some time. Meditation is one of the Eight branches of yoga classified in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. Called dhyana, meditation is considered the highest practice and is the final step before ultimate hapiness. Meditation definition: "meditation means sense withdrawl (pratyahara) and concentration (dharana), sustained into contemplation (dhyana), with the aim of triggering a super-conscious state (samadhi), which is one of intuitive realization of the identity of the individual soul or spirit and the cosmic soul or spirit." Benefits of meditation: Meditation helps reduce stress and anxiety, maintains blood pressure at normal levels, and improves concentrating abilities, clarity and improves creativity. - meditation calms the fluctuations of the mind. A simple way to do meditation: First, sit in a comfortable position, either on a chair or on the floor, with your back and head in a staright position parallel to each other in a straight line. Take a couple of deep breaths, which are called ujjayi pranayama or nadi shodhana. Close your eyes. Breathe easy through your nose. Focus on your breath - cool air in, warm air out. If the mind wanders about and it feels difficult to concentrate, gently bring it back to the breath. That's it. Start with...

...The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali Introduction, Commentaries, and Translation What are the Yoga Sutras and who is Patanjali? Over fifty different English translations of the Yoga Sutras are extant, standing as a human testament to how Universal Truth is celebrated in terms of a rich diversity. Rather than the common and external type of knowledge (emanating from book knowledge), the following translation and commentary are a result of an intimate familiarity and direct experience both with an authentic yogic tradition and with western culture, psychology, and language that has been refined, tested in fire, and integrated for over thirty five years of intense practice (sadhana). This work is dedicated toward revealing the universal message of authentic yoga that the sage, Patanjali, first wrote down approximately 2000 years ago. Patanjali is not the inventor of yoga, but rather yoga's most popularly known scribe. What has become known simply as the "Yoga Sutras" (sutra means thread) or almost equally as common, as the "Yoga Darshana" (the vision of Yoga), is actually a compendium of an ancient pre-existing oral yoga tradition consisting of both practical advice and theoretical context. The most accepted format of the Yoga Sutras consists of four chapters (called padas) written in the Sanskrit language approximately 2000 years ago in Northern India while utilizing the terminology of the time, i.e., Samkhya philosophical trappings. The dates ascribed to the Yoga Sutras...

...Meditation Meditation is a holistic discipline .It is generally an internal, personal practice and most often done without any external involvement. Meditation is a safe and simple way to balance a person’s physical, mental and emotional forces. But can benefit everybody. Meditation is not a technique but a way of life. Meditation means 'a cessation of the thought process' . It describes a state of consciousness, when the mind is free of scattered thoughts and various patterns . The observer (one who is doing meditation) realizes that all the activity of the mind is reduced to one. Herbert Benson, M.D., a professor at Harvard Medical School, describes the meditation experience as the "relaxation response." He discovered by studying various yogis and longtime meditators that the meditation process counteracted the effects of the sympathetic nervous system-the one that wants to fight or flee. Whereas the sympathetic system dilates the pupils and gets the heart rate, respiration, and blood pressure up, the parasympathetic system, activated when we meditate, does just the opposite. Muscle tension decreases, blood pressure drops, and for some extraordinary practitioners, even temperature and basal metabolism rates drop during a prolonged meditation. Oxygen needs of the body are reduced when one is in a highly relaxed state, and brain waves change from the busy beta-waves to the blissful alpha waves. In addition to...

...terrors of war. Nhat Hanh taught Buddhist psychology and Prajnaparamita literature at the Van Hanh Buddhist University, a private institution that focused on Buddhist studies, Vietnamese culture, and languages. At a meeting in April 1965 Van Hanh Union students issued a Call for Peace statement. It declared: "It is time for North and South Vietnam to find a way to stop the war and help all Vietnamese people live peacefully and with mutual respect." Nhat Hanh left for the U.S. shortly afterwards. That’s just the beginning of Thich Nhat Hanh’s life story, his life is a very active and involved one. Nhat Hanh's novel "Peace is Every Step" is a work that centers on the concept of meditation and enlightenment. Hanh bases his discussion on Zen Buddhism, using anecdotes and personal testimonials to demonstrate meditation techniques. He urges the reader to adopt the practice of conscious breathing as a method for reminding themselves about their existences on this earth. Hanh believes that adoption of these practices will help practitioners increase the value of their relationships, obtain peace at higher levels, and increase their feeling of joy....

...Bhgavad Vita precisely described the all of the spiritual paths of the Hindu when he said, “Yoga is the journey of the self to the self through the self”. That discovery comes in 4 separate and distinct forms. Common American perception is that the practice of yoga is primarily a physical practice separate and apart from religion. “The word yoga derives from the same root as does the English word yoke; meaning to unite and place under disciplined training”. Americans take this definition literally and only consider the physical aspect of yoga training. This approach leads to a gap in the most enlightening aspects of yoga; spiritual training. Like many of the world’s religions Hinduism has one distinct goal and that is to unite the human spirit with God. Hindu’s believe that there are 4 separate paths to reaching enlightenment and uniting your spirit with God via the spiritual and physical discipline that is yoga. Because of the variety and complexity of the human personality, Hinduism understands that we all approach our spirituality from different points in life. The focus of the four paths is on the strongest aspect of the personality with the ultimate goal of “rendering the surface self-transparent to its underlying divinity; cleansed of its gross impurities”. The four paths of yoga are Jnana Yoga (the path through knowledge), Bhakti Yoga (the path through love), KarmaYoga (the path through work), and Raja Yoga (the path of the psychophysical). Jnana Yoga is considered...

...Daniel Evans Buddha Boy Buddha boy was a 15 year old boy who meditated for 10 months straight. When people found out about the boy meditating, they came from all around the world to see him. Some came to see if it was even possible for the boy to mediate so long and survive and others came to pray and donate to the cause. The boy came from a poor family and his brother was one of the people who protected him while he was meditating, and he was the only one aloud near the boy. The brother form a group of volunteers he can trust called the committee. What the boy was trying is very dangerous and people die all the time from starvation. Many benefits came from the boy meditating, the city became more populated with people and they brought in a lot of money. All the money went to the old bother and the committee, the family of the boy was very poor and never got any donations. The brother claims that all the donations were used to pay the workers in the committee and for the barbwire fences around the boy. After 10 months of meditating the boy disappeared one night, he came back about a year and a half later and became a teacher. I personally find it very hard to believe that someone can meditate for 10 months and not eat or drink anything and still be alive. So I think the Buddha boy was a scam and the brother was giving food and water to the boy at night when no one was able to see. Also, it doesn’t make sense to me that the boy disappears in the middle of the night and comes...

...Well-Being Research has discovered that through most religious or spiritual involvements there is a positive correlation between religiosity or spirituality and well-being (Koenig, 1995a; Levin, 1997). These establishments provide an environment that fosters prosocial and adaptive qualities, which increase positive mood and decrease stress (Donahue & Benson, 1995). Most religious or spiritual institutions serve as a support system for young adults and families, socially and emotionally. Religious or spiritual organizations offer individuals a sense of connectedness (Blaine & Croker, 1995), which has a positive effect on self-esteem and outlook on life. According to research, teenagers who have religious or spiritual affiliations are less likely of suicide ideation, suicide attempts, alcohol use, and sexual involvement, while being more likely to be involved in volunteer work (Varon & Riley, 1999). Research has also shown that those living through traumatic experiences have discovered that coping though a religious framework has been beneficial (Plante, Saucedo, & Rice, 2001). Miller and Thoresen (1999) has discovered “increasing spiritual and/or religious integration in psychotherapy has improved treatment outcome for religious clients.” Depression Research proposes that religiosity and spirituality are linked with reducing levels of depression on a general scale (Captipovic, Ilakovac, Durjancek, & Amidzc, 1995; Cosar, Kocal, Arikan, & Isik; Plante...

...The Effects of Meditation Kayla Ritch West Georgia Technical College Abstract There are different ways to meditate, and since it’s such a personal practice there are probably more than any of us know about. Some meditations are focused-attention, or mindful meditation, while others are open-monitoring meditation. Mindful or focused-attention meditation is where you focus on one specific thing; whereas, open-monitoring meditation is where you pay attention to all of the things happening around you. With all mediation techniques there are great effects, some alike and some different. People who practice focus-attention meditation do not show any obvious signs of improvement in the creativity task following their meditation, but those who did open-monitoring meditation, however, they performed better on a task that asked them to come up with new ideas. No matter what type of meditation you practice you are expected to feel less stress. The more someone meditates, the less anxiety they have, and it turns out this is because we’re actually loosening the connections of particular neural pathways. What is meditation? “Meditation is a group of techniques designed to alter consciousness; it’s believed to enhance self-knowledge and well-being through reduced self-awareness” (Huffman & Dowdell, 2015). The book also states that most people in the beginning stages of meditation experience a simple, mellow type of relaxation, followed by a mild euphoria and a sense of timelessness...

...According to Heelas New Age groups are characterised as self-spirituality where people are seeking spirituality and try to find themselves and detraditionalisation are those who reject scared texts and value personal experience and discovering the truth about themselves. People can find in this in New Age groups, where beliefs include UFO’s and aliens, astrology, tarot cards, crystals, various forms of alternative medicines like healing, yoga and magic. New Age groups are extremely diverse eclectic, their beliefs can vary from being world-affirming that help people succeed in the outer world and world-rejecting that help people become enlightened in the inner world. Drane argues that New Age groups appeal because of the changes in post-modern society, where there is a loss in faith of the claims to have the ‘truth’. Since science promise of bringing a better world seemed to be lost and society is more fragmented e.g. wars and global warming thus making people disillusioned with churches as it fails to meet their spiritual needs. As a result people are turning to New Age groups to help them on a journey of self-spiritually rather than the metanarratives of traditional churches. There is also loss of faith in science due to problems caused by science and technology New Age groups can also be appealing because it is part of late modern society. In the modern era, as we have tried to become enlightened and New Age groups fit part of it also being modern and individualised...
