Literary Term Essay
2/18/2013

When writing a story, there is way more to it then just writing down a bunch of words. Literary terms are a main element to every story. They are what make a story a story. The two literary terms that to me make a story very important are Setting and Point of view. Without either of them in a story, it would be rather boring and dull. In the stories “A & P” by John Updike and “ A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner, I believe that both have wonderful examples of setting and point of view. In John Updike's short story "A&P" the boy works in an A&P store. The setting is a grocery store in the 1950's. It is in a small town and the boy works a mundane job as a cashier. He sees the same thing day after day. The same isles, same colors, and the same keys on the cash register. However, for the boy the store seems almost devoid of color. The girls come into the store are totally different than the expected norm. They are cheerful and vibrant. They are the opposite of the store and shift the mood of the boy. The setting is important because the boy is able to see that the girls mean excitement and something better than the store where everything always seems to be the same. A & P is told in first person from Sammy's point of view with a tone allowing the narrator to connect on a deeper level and truly portraying Sammy as a teenager. Updike does a good job making it seem as if Sammy is telling a story to a close friend. Sammy's tone is extremely important, for it sets the scene. "In walks these three girls in nothing but bathing suits. I'm in the third check-out slot, with my back to the door, so I don't see them until they're over by the bread"(17). The first sentence draws interest and establishes a connection, as if Sammy is your best friend telling you a story of what happened.

...Case Study #10 1. Botulism is the diagnosis because of the characteristics of botulism. The symptoms all match with botulism because botulism makes muscle weakness caused by the supply of cells to the cranial nerves, the nerves connecting to the control of eye movement, facial muscles and the control of chewing and swallowing. The weakness then spreads throughout the body to the arms (starting in the shoulders and proceeding to the forearms) and legs (again from the thighs down to the feet). As for infant botulism is the most common form of botulism. It is also most common in kids under than 6 months. 2. If botulism was the case Kevin would have to be admitted to the hospital to start treatment. Treatment cannot usually be treated in the home but in the hospital. If botulism is not treated quickly it can be fatal, with the treatment it is usually possible to stop toxins causing further paralysis. Since Kevin is a 13 week old he will need to be incubated to keep him warm and protect him from other infections, this still requires treatment from hospitals. 3. An antitoxin is administered to Kevin at the earliest opportunity. Antitoxin is derived from horse serum that is distributed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Antitoxin is effective against toxin type A,B and E and these of the4 toxins that are in the botulinum toxin and that is what unattached the nerve endings. Antibiotics cannot be administered to botulism because the Clostridium groups of toxins...

Pre Med

...It was around Christmas when my dad asked me to run an errand with him because his car had broken down. We got in the car and I drove normally. I was about to cross an intersection when the light turned yellow and was about to turn red, my dad told me to hit the break but my adolescent mind did exactly the opposite. I thought I had enough time to make it across, turns out I didn’t. I don’t remember much after that, everything happened so fast it all just seems like a really wicked dream. I woke up about 7 hours later in a hospital with my mother by my side crying her eyes out. I guess I was still heavily sedated that I couldn’t really move anything more than my eyelids. I wanted to move but my body was unresponsive. I just closed my eyes and went back to sleep. I awoke a day later and my mother told me my father had suffered serious injuries and was in intensive care and he might not make it. I could not help but feel responsible for what my dad was going through. If he died I would have to live with the memory that my irresponsible actions were the cause of his dead, I would forever be haunted with the fact that I killed my own father. We all have defining moments in our life, moments that change our future and redefine our past. It’s actually kind of sad that most of those moments have to hurt us or impact us in a negative manner. I guess it’s just human nature to wait until we get hurt to learn our lesson. I felt helpless as I could not do anything to aid my father...

This is what leads to children being diagnosed with ADHD or Attention – Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder. “ADHD is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders of childhood” (CDC, 2014). Knowing what ADHD is, the credibility of the site that is providing the information, and the audience that the web page targets are key to finding information on the disease that is credible, factual, and easy to understand. ADHD is usually diagnosed in children and can last up into adulthood. “It is normal for children to have trouble focusing and behaving at one time or another” (CDC, 2014). Marketing Pet Meds

...Marketing 331 – Pet Meds Essay Pet Meds, an online pet pharmacy was founded in 1996 when the Internet just started becoming popular. Like many companies they saw an opportunity to keep their overhead low so they could over value to its consumers. Over the years many websites have come and gone with various levels of success. Running an Internet Business is more than throwing up a website and hoping people will come and buy from you. The same marketing disciplines are needed on the internet as in brick and mortar retailers. Plus in some ways successful Internet companies need more marketing savvy and creativity. The distribution plan for Pet Meds is three fold. They sell on the Internet, have a call center where customers can call in, and they also offer their products through direct mail and print. This way they are targeting different types of customers, those that are net literate and shop online, those that still like to talk to someone when taking an order and those they like to look through a printed catalog and read about what they are thinking of buying. This approach appeals to many people, especially the Internet. The Internet is non-threatening without a lot of sales pressure. People can browse and compare at their leisure. One of the nice perks Pet Meds has on its website is a lot of articles so customers can become more informed on a particular disease or condition. This is a great marketing strategy. Pet owners they may be researching a disease could end up on...
