“Meghan….Meghan!” I heard my name called out in the distance. Darkness surrounded me accompanied by a gentle rocking. I heard the voice again. At first it was quiet and muffled, almost like someone was trying to speak while underwater. But every time it got closer, louder, and clearer until it was right next to me. “Meghan!!” I heard one more time. This time it was so loud that it sounded like an alarm in my head. I jolted awake. “Wh-what is it?” I stuttered, looking up at the person who was shouting at me. “You fell asleep, we’re here.” I rubbed my bleary eyes and looked around. We were on a boat. Why were we on a boat again? I couldn’t remember. I looked up at the person who had spoken to me. It was Erin, a close friend of mine. “What are …show more content…
“We ran away from home, we were heading towards a nearby island and now we’re here. Look.” She pointed. I turned in the direction she was pointing and saw an island covered in a blanket of tall trees. We were quickly nearing the shore. All of the sudden it hit me that this had happened. We really ran away. I only did it on a whim but we really made it. Erin threw a backpack in my direction. I caught it and looked up at her with surprise. “What? You think I’m stupid enough to run away to an uninhabited island in the middle of the freaking ocean without supplies? No way.” Erin said with a matter of fact expression. I sat there silent for a moment and stared up at her. She stared back. Then we both burst out in laughter. “I should’ve known, you’re always prepared for anything.” I laughed, wiping my eye. “But I just didn’t think we would actually go through with this.” All of the sudden Erin stopped laughing and crouched down, meeting me eye to eye. “I’m serious Meg. You know how much I hated it there, we’ll just stay here until they come to their senses or if we make a better plan.” “Yea, I know.” I nodded, dropping my voice into a more serious …show more content…
Fairly quickly we happened upon a small clearing. It was overshadowed by a large tree with a few patches of sunlight. “Sounds good, now help me out.” Erin said, throwing all of her stuff into the center of the clearing. I nodded and started flattening down the area while she set up the tent. Once a good area was flattened Erin set the tent on top and nailed it to the ground. “Alright” I nodded with determination. “Now that that’s done we should get a good scope of our surroundings and look for fresh water and maybe dry wood for a fire.” “NO!” Erin shouted suddenly. “No fire, they’ll find us.” She hissed, quieting her voice. “Yea you’re right, I hadn’t thought about that.” I said quietly, trying to calm her down. I knew she was angry about the situation she had left behind, and scared she would be found. But I had no idea that her fear ran so deep that she would be worried a small fire would give them away. “Let’s go ahead and look for water.” I said calmly. Erin looked up at the sky. “Let’s save it for tomorrow, it’s getting dark.” she grunted. I also looked up. She was right, the sun was setting and the sky had turned a wonderful shade of red. I squinted as I continued to stare at the sky. Yes, it really was a wonderful shade of red. But somehow it was almost ominous, perhaps it was the fact that by the second the sky was turning into a deeper and deeper shade of red until it
