Melatonin is a crucial hormone that is secreted by the pineal gland, a member of the larger system of endocrine glands that is specialized for regulating sleep cycles and facilitating learning. Modern day knowledge on Melatonin has discerned that when endogenously created it consolidates newly acquired information into long-term memory whereas exogenous sources reduces various memory deficits in the elderly and in animal models (Zakaria, Ahmad and Othman, 2016). These animal models can be seen as attempts to measure an aging brain associated with the fluctuations in neural substrates that lead to decreased cognitive performance. The results of Chen et al. (2017b) implicate that in adult mice models, melatonin is capable of reversing memory

...Treatment of Insomnia: An Alternative Approach Anoja S. Attele, DDS, Jing-Tian Xie, MD, and Chun-Su Yuan, MD, PhD Abstract Insomnia is the most common sleep disorder, and is often associated with significant medical, psychological, and social disturbances. Conventional medical treatment for insomnia includes psychological and pharmacological approaches; however, long-term use of frequently prescribed medications can lead to habituation and problematic withdrawal symptoms. Therefore, herbal and other natural sleep aids are gaining popularity, as herbs commonly used for their sedative-hypnotic effects do not have the drawbacks of conventional drugs. Whether alternative therapies possess activity similar to conventional therapies needs further evaluation. (Altern Med Rev 2000;5(3):249-259) Introduction Humans sleep approximately one-third of their lives. Scientists do not fully understand the necessity for sleep, nor the mechanisms for sleep’s physical and mental restoration. Sleep disruption creates fatigue and suboptimal performance, causing significant medical, psychological, and social disturbances.1,2 Insomnia is a widespread health complaint, and the most common of all sleep disorders.3 In the United States, the cost of insomnia, including treatment, lost productivity, and insomnia-related accidents may exceed $100 billion per year.4,5 Insomnia can be defined as the subjective complaint of impairment in the duration, depth, or restful quality of sleep. It is characterized...

Essay On Technology And Technology

...the words at the bottom. The same applies to ads at the side of a website. Most of the time, there will be at least one advertisement on a website. Therefore, a person is unconsciously forced to multi-task and divided his or her attention, and Greenfield argues that multi-tasking prevents understanding. Therefore, intelligence is harmed by technology because intelligence requires a person to logically understand the surrounding environment well. An argument can exist that a person might learn the material well with visuals, but the weakness in that view comes from the fact that a human does not learn material only one way. Furthermore, Greenfield asserts that “most visual media are real-time media that do not allow time for reflection, analysis, or imagination” (Wolpert). Therefore, most media does not create intelligence in humans because logical, critical learning is absent. Instead, the media fills the brain of the individual with useless material that harms his or her...

Dream Content and Schizophrenia

...How do dreams differ in people with schizophrenia to from those without the disorder? Kristin Staub Brookfield High School Dreaming is a vital part in sleeping, yet in some individuals it interferes in their waking state. For example, schizophrenics have hallucinatory images while they’re not sleeping causing some psychologists to speculate why this happens. People without the disorder and other people with other disorders have been found to dream while they’re in REM sleep which is a major mental process that allows people to dream. The following articles, “Sleep Fantasy in Normal and Schizophrenic Persons,” “An Extension of Freud and Jung’s Theory of Relation of Dream States to Schizophrenia,” “The Neurochemistry of Waking and Sleeping Mental Activity: The Disinhibition-Dopamine Hypothesis,” “Dream Content of Schizophrenics, Nonschizophrenic Mentally Ill, and community Control Adolescents,” “Sleep Disturbance in Schizophrenia” “Rorschach Responses Subsequent to REM Deprivation in Schizophrenic and Nonschizophrenic Patients,” attempt to explain the problem statement: How do dreams differ in people with schizophrenia to those without the disorder, through REM sleep in normal individuals and schizophrenics. Dream content will also be investigated to answer the problem statement and certain sleep habits. In addition Jung’s and Freud’s theory attempt to explain how dreaming is connected with schizophrenia in their conscious state rather than in their sleeping state through...

Brain Mind and Behavior

...An Analysis on Seasonal Affective Disorder and the effects of Climate and Lighting on Emotion Brain, Mind & Behavior "Seasonal affective disorder also known as winter depression, winter blues, summer depression, summer blues, or seasonal depression, is a mood disorder in which people who have normal health throughout most of the year experience depressive symptoms in the winter or summer, spring or autumn year after year." In the DSM-IV, it is not characterized as a unique mood disorder but considered a 'specifier of major depression'. (Stephen, 2007) Is it not more than a convenience that the year’s most joyous holidays occur on the onset of the winter solstice? The impact of light on emotion has been shown and linked by numerous surveys and tests in the past. Low or dark lighting has been shown to cause eye fatigue and headaches. Absence of natural daylight triggers depression and poor immune defenses. Insufficient lighting is linked to emotional stress and to physical ailments. Bright light stimulates emotions, while low levels of illumination quiet the senses. On the other hand, an excess of unnatural light does not replace the calming effects of natural daylight. Too much artificial light and overly-bright rooms hurt the eyes and make one feel jittery. (Fisher E. , 2004) The impact of lighting on mood and cognition has been difficult to demonstrate because people in industrialized countries, on average, spend 93 percent of their time indoors, making them largely...

Psy Consciousness

...7: States of Consciousness CHAPTER PREVIEW Consciousness is our awareness of ourselves and our environment. Conscious information processing enables us to exercise control and to communicate our mental states to others. Beneath the surface, unconscious processing occurs simultaneously on many parallel tracks. Our daily schedule of waking and sleeping is governed by a biological clock known as circadian rhythm. Our sleep also follows a repeating cycle. Awakening people during REM sleep yields predictable “dreamlike” reports that are mostly of ordinary events. Freud’s view that dreams can be traced back to erotic wishes is giving way to newer theories, for example, that dreams help us process information and fix it in memory or that dreams erupt from neural activity. Studies of hypnosis indicate that, although hypnotic procedures may facilitate recall, the hypnotist’s beliefs frequently work their way into subjects’ recollections. Hypnosis can be at least temporarily therapeutic and has the potential of bringing significant pain relief. Hypnosis may be an extension both of normal principles of social influence and of everyday splits in consciousness. Psychoactive drugs also alter consciousness. Depressants act by depressing neural functioning. Although their effects are pleasurable, they impair memory and self-awareness and may have other physical consequences. Stimulants act at the synapses by influencing the brain’s neurotransmitters. Their effects depend on...

Altered Sleep–Wake Cycles and Physical Performance in Athletes

...circadian rhythms are to be separated from the fatigue process. Individual requirements for sleep show large variations but chronic reduction in sleep can lead to immuno-suppression. There are still unanswered questions about the sleep needs of athletes, the role of ‘power naps’ and the potential for exercise in improving the quality of sleep. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Keywords: Circadian rhythm; Exercise; Jet-lag; Shift-work 1. Introduction The sleep–wakefulness cycle is the most discernable of human circadian functions, activity being associated with the hours of daylight and sleep with the hours of darkness. This recurrence on a daily basis is linked with responses of the pineal gland to the environment, its secretion of melatonin being promoted at dusk and inhibited on exposure to morning light. There is a myriad of other biological functions that are knit into a common system of circadian rhythms, cycles in behaviour and in biological functions that recur with a...

Post Trauma Stress Disorder

...POST TRAUMA STRESS DISORDER What is Post Trauma stress Disorder? PTSD is a condition that is most commonly associated with veterans of war who have experienced front line battle. However, it can affect anyone who has had a major trauma in their lives. These can include but are not limited to auto accidents, rape, child and/or spousal abuse as well as other traumatic cases. The Wounded Warriors Project is a service that offers assistance to those returning from war that have lost limbs, vision, and those with PTSD to accept what has caused them to be or act crazy when they see or hear certain sounds. One of these sounds that can affect the soldier is the sound of fireworks. However, watching movies about war can also trigger that feeling of being there fighting with them. PTSD is categorized into four types: intrusive memories, avoidance, negative changes in thinking and mood, or changes in emotional reactions. The symptoms of PTSD can start as early as 1 day up to three months of the traumatic event. However, there are those who do not show signs of PTSD for many years. The symptoms may not appear until work or social situations cause the client to see the problem. Intrusive memories are mainly unwanted recurrent memories. This can make the client relive or have flashbacks on what caused the trauma. With this in mind, many family members find themselves walking on egg shells to avoid triggering an episode. Many clients with PTSD begin to avoid talking...

Effects of Insomnia

...Abstract Insomnia is generally defined as the inability to sleep adequately a few times a weak and doesn’t mean the inability to sleep at all. Insomnia can be chronic or on going.Certain causes of insomnia can be categorized into three major categories which include lifestyle, health and environment. Experiments were carried out to see how insomnia affects quality of life and the conclusion reached was that people suffering from insomnia report greater quality of life impairment in contrast to people without insomnia. Sleep disturbance can exacerbate the condition, disrupt treatment, cause further complications and add to the social disability associated with chronic illness. Insomnia can result in mental illness and can have a huge impact when it comes to efficiency of a subject. Personally traits can be a major differentiating point when it comes to comparison between subjects with and without insomnia however personality differences between insomniacs and controls might rather be state-dependent instead of trait-dependent. Herbal treatment as per 82% of Canadians are also very effective when it comes to treating insomnia. Rest and little exertion can also play a vital role when it comes to curing insomnia.
