DeBeers Alternative Solutions 1. Stay in current industry and go into synthetic diamonds for industrial purposes. * This will not damage the brand name that they have created for themselves in the natural diamond industry as opposed to if they decided to do both synthetic and natural diamond industry. * Less risk if they decide not to enter a new industry that is growing, however not positive if maybe just a fad. * If they stay in current they have to do product development which means to stay in the same market but develop new products. * This way they can differentiate themselves from other natural diamond companies and capture more market share because there is more competition now. * Have to come up with new occasions to use the diamonds for other than just weddings because industry is currently in the mature stage so profits may be increasing at a decreasing rate. * Make synthetic diamonds only for industrial purposes and not more jewellery, that way they don’t lose any brand loyalty from existing customers. 2. Stay in current industry; however go into synthetic diamond industry with a new brand name. * that way the DeBeers reputation and name is not destroyed if they use same name brand * huge risk going into different market which is a substitute for current industry * synthetic diamond industry is in early growth stage because it is growing by 10-15% every year. * Synthetic diamonds are much more eco-friendly to produce than natural diamonds and that is becoming more and more attractive to customers. * Market looks promising and growing at a good pace, and could keep taking share away from the natural diamond industry. * Going into this market with a new name but still under the same company could be a good thing because this way existing customers don’t see DeBeers’s name as a lower quality brand

The Forming Stage, this is where individual forming an initial impression of the other members. They are busy finding their place in the team, sizing each other up, and asking a lot of questions. The challenge of this group stage is to create team identity and make the teams important to the group members. Each member was quickly realized; we saw that each member had their own role/identify. Diane was the quiet but very good at producing super ideas, Steve was the businessman always ready for action, Janet was the over-achiever while Mike played the role of the joker and in this case also the loafer. At this stage the group requires definitions of their roles and goals, the group’s agenda, deadlines, etc. The leader should be the structure and become the emotional center of the team. I think Christine fail at this, since should allow Mike to overrule the group decision to meet each day before class to discuss the case. If Christine had an understanding of the stages of group development, she would have known that as the leader she has to listen carefully, be visible, and maintain open communication and feedback channels for the team. While still offering support and reassurance and keep group members accountable for day-to-day results. It was quite clear that the group had master the first...

The Forgotten Group Member

...The Forgotten Group Member The Forgotten Group member is a case study in the Organization Behavior book that creates a scenario about an A student by the name of Christine who faces challenges while working in a group on a project as the team leader. Initially, the group starts in the forming stage because the group members and especially Christine begin to have concerns about how their personal work and the work of the other team members contribute to the project. Towards the end, the group is now in the storming stage. The storming stage is described as a period of high emotion and tension among group members. During this stage, the group may experience uncomfortable pressures and efforts are made to find ways to accomplish team goals while also satisfying individual needs. I believe the group is now in this stage because a difficult member by the name of Mike has not been showing up to group meetings and has only turned in rough handwritten notes. Because Mike has been social loafing, this will cause the group to express emotions about the situation which will cause tension among the group. The group will then realized that because the lack of Mike’s efforts, they will have to come together to do his work. If Christine, the team leader, would have understood the stages of development, she would have realized that her team was not developing at the pace they should have been. She would have recognized the issues at a time where it could have been easier to resolve...

...The Forgotten Group Member Name: Institution: Instructor: Date of submission: Introduction There are five main stages in group development. These are formation, storming, norming, the performing stage and the adjourning stage (Hellriegel & Slocum, 2007). It is necessary for each of these stages to be undertaken by every group; clearly knowing when on stage ends and another begins. Failures to do so, problems occur, that may culminate to poor performance or not completing the assignment at all. An analysis on a research carried out in the University of Ontario, school of business. Students were asked to carry out a group assignment. This paper discusses Problems, causes and possible solutions of the problems in this group. a) The Issue. In Christine’s group, there are a number of issues that stir concern. Mike does not take his part of the assignment seriously. He comes to meetings poorly prepared and enjoys talking about unimportant issues during discussions and misses others. Janet, although hardworking, misses meeting sessions without apology. Christine, as the group leader, does not manage to unite the group members so as to achieve the best results. This does not comply with the mission statement and job description they had earlier signed in the exhibits. Janet’s plan to leave the group and work alone is an indication of the failure of the group to stick together. The major issue in this organization is leadership incompetence...

...initial action was to elect a manager or “team coordinator.” As such, this person was to support the work efforts of the other group members. At the first meeting the team coordinator, Christine, informally analyzed and formed perceptions about each team member, including a negative perception about Mike and his priorities. Assuming that each group member also formed perceptions about the others, the group would be in the storming stage of group development. At this stage, Christine’s hostility toward Mike can be justified. During this stage of development, groups will form coalitions or cliques, for example when Mike observed the team having lunch together and assumed the team was meeting without him. The members with a similar work schedule spent more time together and developed stronger relations and understandings of the work dynamics. Christine attempted to find ways to accomplish the team goals by altering her interactions with Mike according to his interpersonal style. For example, Christine gathered his notes and attempted to be flexible around his schedule. A better understanding about the stages of group development could have assisted Christine’s leadership with the team because she would have addressed group tensions, better defined individual tasks within the group, set goals and improved relationships among the other team members. According to the narrative of the case study, Christine feels personal tension with Mike and his...

...FORGOTTEN GROUP MEMBER The given case clearly describes possible problems that we (students) can face during group work. Disunity, misunderstanding, lack of time, failure of given tasks and arguments are the points that can be met during the work in the group. Mr. Rasmussen’s approach of teaching isn’t innovative but it is very effective. And it needs a lot of effort as from the instructor’s side and as from the students’ side. In this case we can see how group members communicate with each other, which problems occur in the process of group development and also we can see how it is important to pass through the stated stages (forming, norming, storming and performing) accurately and coherently. While reading this case I brought a few issues, I would divide them into 3 groups according to the source of its origin: I. Janet a. Janet had a lack of time b. She didn’t range her priorities c. She didn’t always inform the group that she would be absent d. She didn’t even try to improve her relations with the group mates e. Without fixing problems with the group mates she went straightly to Mr. Rasmussen II. Christine f. Christine didn’t pay a lot of attention to the group cohesion g. After recognizing that the environment in the group is kind of stressful she just stated it and didn’t try to fix h. She skipped the first stage of group development (establish relationship) III. ...group first started, they were at the forming stage. This means that members come together and form initial impressions. As for right now they are in the storming stage. This stage is characterized as team members struggling to deal with expectations and status. This is reflected by conflicts over tasks and how the team works together. To support what I am saying, when Christine and her group first started, they all were willing to work together to get the group project done. Now because of one person (Mike), the group dynamic has suffered. With Mike making excuses for why he could not be there, this is hurting them as a group. By the final weeks of the group project, Mike was showing signs of not being a team player. First it started with him being a class clown, even though that is not a problem at all. There might be those who see that as someone who is not a serious team member. The next few weeks Mike started making excuses for why he could not be there for the group meetings. In her leadership role as “Team Coordinator”, an understanding of the stages of group development would have assisted her, by developing a perception before hand of when somebody within the group is not fulfilling their part. The primary problems facing the group are Mike and the group’s diverse personalities. With Mike as part of the group, you get the feeling that he feels like there not treating him as a member of the group. With the diverse personalities everyone is viewed and treated...

The Forgotten Group Member

...The Forgotten Group Member Group Development Working in a group to achieve a high quality group project can be one of people’s most difficult school experiences. Working in a group is tough because there is often someone who does not pull their own weight. “There are five stages to group development, adjourning, forming, storming, performing, and norming” (John & Wiley pg 166). Christine’s group from the Case Study the Forgotten Group Member is in between the Storming and Norming Stages. The Storming Stage “is dealing with tensions and defining group tasks,” while the Norming Stage is dealing with high emotionality and tension among the group members” (John & Wiley pg. 166). Christine and her group could have had better success in creating a solid group paper if she would have focused more on the forming stage at the beginning of their relationship. The forming stage happens “in the initial entry into the group,” during this stage individuals ask a number of questions as they begin to identify with other group members and with the team itself” (John & Wiley pg 166). Group member Mike was the black sheep of the group. He did not complete his assigned tasks and missed group meetings because of work and personal issues. Christine became frusterated because of his absences and his incomplete work. In the beginning meetings of the group, Christine and other groups members could have asked the questions during the forming stage like “What are the potential barriers...

...Forgotten Group Member Melissa T Grice Keller Graduate School of Business Management Leadership & Organizational Behavior GM 591 Professor Carr July 23, 2011 The Forgotten Group Member According to our text, “A team is a group of people brought together to use their complementary skills to achieve a common purpose for which they are collectively accountable” (Schermerhorn, 2010). The case study involving, The Forgotten Group Member demonstrates an excellent example of how teams fail and fall apart related to a breakdown or lack of effective communication between all parties involved. Thus, it is important to acknowledge that a leader has responsibility to lead the team, but the members also must be involved in order to complete the project effectively and in a timely manner. Part I. Group Development After review of the case and data from the textbook, the group begins the storming stage. “The storming stage of team development is a period of high emotionality and tension among the group members. During this stage, hostility and infighting may occur, and the team typically experiences many changes” (Schermerhorn, 2010). Noticeably, hostility and fighting came from Mike and his perceptions about how the group was excluding him from meetings, which wasn’t an accurate perception. One could determine that if Mike would participate in the workload he could become a viable player in the team. Mike hasn’t performed to the degree as other group members have because of...

The Forgotten Member- a Case Report

...The Forgotten Member- A Case Report In Organizational Behavior, we define a team as a group of people brought together to use their complementary skills to achieve a common purpose for which they are collectively accountable. (Schermerhorn, 2010) Stages of group development Bruce Tuckman (1965) developed a 4-stage model of group development.  They are 1. Forming: The group comes together and gets to initially know one other and form as a group. 2. Storming: A chaotic vying for leadership and trialing of group processes 3. Norming: Eventually agreement is reached on how the group operates 4. Performing: The group practices its craft and becomes effective in meeting its objectives. 5. Adjourning: The process of "unforming" the group, that is, letting go of the group structure and moving on. Part I: Group Development  The Forgotten Member is a case study of a group of students who were assigned a project by their professor. In the case of Christine and her group which is composed of her classmates in accounting, their goal is to generate a well-written analysis in reviewing a 7-page case. This five member group is a dynamic bunch because of the mix of different personalities. Since there is diversity within the group, it cannot be prevented that a variety of perceptions and work attitudes affect the group processes and development. It also mentions different personality traits that a team coordinator has to encounter in a team to maintain a balance. It also outlines...

The Forgotten Member Case Study

...“The Forgotten Member” Case Study 1. Group development After carefully reviewing details given for the case, it seems that the group is stuck between storming and norming stages. Even though four members of the team accepted each other and started working together on the assignment, there is one person that has been, as per title of the case, forgotten member. Mike does not participate in the meetings and is not contributing as expected by the team. At the same time, team members are not concerned about his absence. Moreover, Mike’s hostile behavior causes further isolation. In the storming stage of team development, leader’s role is to help clarify membership expectations and find ways to accomplish team goals while also meeting personal needs potential (Schermerhorn, Osborn, Uhl-Bien, Hunt, 2012). Christine lacks experience and skills to lead the group through the team development stages. In result, the group has never come together to reach next stages of team development namely norming, performing, and adjourning. Each person works individually on the designated section, there is no communication and shared responsibility for the overall result. Knowledge of stages of team development would certainly help Christine to understand group dynamics and prepare solutions for different challenges right from the beginning. 2. Problem identification The main primary problem is lack of leadership skills, especially in a team formation process, and passiveness of a team...

Case Study the Forgotten Group Member

...Case Study - The Forgotten Group Member Helen M. Gales GM591 - Leadership and Organizational Behavior Keller Graduate School of Management Professor Leo Shelton July 23, 2012 Case Study - The Forgotten Group Member Part 1: Group Development In looking over the details given for the case, the group appears to still be in the Storming stage. While some of the team has come together and are providing their assigned portions of the class project, they still are not a cohesive, and functioning team; due to one of their team members being preoccupied with outside demands and not really coming together with the rest of the team. By having a better understanding of the stages of group development, Christine would have had a better idea of how to lead the group through the different stages and help them to move forward towards a successful completion of the assignment. The text indicates that for a team to be successful it needs to go through all of the stages, forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning; making progress as each stage is completed. Part II: Problem Identification From the little amount of information that the case gives concerning the initial meetings of the group, the primary problem is that Mike is seen as the "clown" and not taken seriously when suggestions are made. From what the text indicates about the different stages, this indicates a "clique" was formed between the other team members, and a general lack of concern was given to Mike and...
