Memoir I remember clearly how my first day in 5th grade went at Sally K. Ride. I went through those horrific doors and it still shocked me that boys and girls go to the same school and there are no uniforms.
It all started the day before the first day of school; there was an orientation for the new kids. I met my teacher, Mr. Picca. His name reminded me of this cartoon, Pucca, that I used to watch when I was a younger. Seeing that I’m not the only new kid calms me down a little but not enough; I knew they were not as nervous as I am. This was my first public school experience. 1) Yes. Obviously. 2) I’ve only been here for 20 minutes 3) Sure, I won’t talk that much though… 4) Philippines. When Mr. Picca finally got his things together, he put us in our assigned seats. On my left was Bryce Taylor, and on my right was Aiden Johnson. Aiden had black curly hair. I imagined he had snacks, pencils, erasers and gum in his fluffy hair. Bryce had blonde hair and eyes blue like the ocean. As Mr. Picca was doing his introduction speech, basically talking about himself and his history blah blah blah, all i could think about were those girls. Were they the mean stereotypes who make fun of new kids, like in the movies? I was very scared. The day went by really slowly, but finally, Lunch. As I was on my way to a table those girls grabbed me and made me sit with them. I immediately thought, “Oh no, They are the mean girls from the movies.” It turns out that they were actually really nice and seemed interested in me. I noticed that these girls were full of confidence; maybe that’s why they have a lot of friends. On the other hand, I’m not confident; I can barely ask a cashier for ketchup. At the end of lunch I got to memorize their names: Haley, Cynthia, Asia and Amber. They had really pretty names and then there’s Alex, very generic and common. “It was okay.” I replied. I really didn't want to talk about it because I was still upset that I had to move, I blamed her for it.
“Met new friends?” She asked as she entered my room.
“I guess, I met this girl named, Asia, pretty cool name and Amber. They were really nice.”
“Oh that’s great, okay I’ll go make dinner.”
Finally, she left and I had time to close my eyes and take another nap; but my mind was wide awake. “Hey let’s think about school and how embarrassing you were!” I thought to myself.
“No stop.”
I pushed those thoughts away and tried to stay positive. I met new people who were nice enough to spend time with me. The school was new but, It was very welcoming.
“You stuttered a lot” Oh so what? They understood I was nervous. “You can’t shake hands properly” He still waited and shook my hand. This mental war kept going for about 15 minutes.
I was very worried for no reason, I thought school was going to be like those stereotypical movies. Where there’s a preppy group, nerdy group, mean group and so on and so forth. Turns out, school isn't like that at all. No matter what happens, there are always people who you’ll meet that are really understanding and
