Everyone has that one teacher that they remember adoring throughout their educational experience. They were compassionate and considerate, but also taught the curriculum in a way that was comprehensible and memorable up until this point. Additionally, these teachers would have their own type of teaching style that stem from the four philosophies of education. It will be our job as education majors (and future educators), to not merely duplicate that educators teaching style, but to use it as a reference and build our own individualized style. We must ensure that we do not simply teach the curriculum, but make it a wonderful experience the students will not forget.

A child must first be able to distinguish each number from one another. Most preschools focus on the numbers 0-10. A child must be able to correctly name each number before beginning to memorize them. Similar to letters, distinguishing and remembering numbers can be done with sandpaper numbers or felt numerals. However, if using this method for both numbers and letters, it is smart to use two separate materials for each type of symbol to allow children to differentiate the two. Once the numbers 0-10 are recognized, a teacher will be able to educate the children on counting. It is best for teachers to use relatable objects for this area of academics. Using common objects such as apples, cookies, or coins allow the children to physically count up by simply adding all the objects together. A worthy example of this is the piggy bank method. Paper bowls which appear to look like piggy banks are placed in front of the child, along with a pile of pennies. The child is then asked to place a certain amount of pennies, one-by-one within the piggy bank (consisting of the numbers 1-10). The progenies can then physically hold the coins and one in one at a time, until they have reached the correct amount of coins. Some children may need to have the word in front of them to rewrite it, while others write letters backwards. This is normal for the age group, however, as a teacher is always imperative to keep note of this. If someone is having trouble, assist them by providing the word written out by the teacher on a piece of paper, or provide a child with the letters written in dashes that they can trace over so they understand the letters further. When it comes to counting, continuous practice is the most beneficial action. Counting is an intricate concept to grasp for some children to assisting them with counting can aid them. Count aloud with them if they are having trouble, or physically count objects alongside them to bring down their anxiety.
