Three Rivers College Professionalism Report Mental Health Fieldwork
Professionalism is an issue that impacts every aspect of occupational therapy intervention. A high level of professionalism not only supports credibility, but in fact ensures that interventions will be effective through the proper administration of intervention techniques. This interview is with Tammy Shepard, Clinical manager at FCC Behavioral Health, and discusses professionalism standards and how she maintains them in her facility.

Shepherd's answer is that it does lower their perceived value of the professional, but since they set their own schedule it is very unlikely that will happen. She is referencing primarily case managers when she talks about this issue, but even the regular staff can be flexible in scheduling and therefore rarely if ever are they late or absent.
What are the difficulties in working short-handed? Shepherd's answer is that they must ship resources in order to make the ratios of staff to in house residents. There are certain ratios that the state requires in order for them to retain their licensure. Once again she emphasizes that this almost never happens because of the incredibly flexible nature of their scheduling. It seems that they have these flexibility safeguards in place so that they rarely if ever have to deal with this …show more content…
The impact is minimal unless there are chronic absences due to illness and an inability to meet even the most basic obligations.
What is the company policy on attendance?
The general policy is if there is no work there is no pay.Each employee does buildup leave time... 6.66 hours after 90 days... and can make up lost hours on other days. This generous flexibility in scheduling policy alleviates a lot of issues, according to Shepard.
What occurs if an employee is in breach of the policy as outlined?
Remediation policies are in place, that may include a doctor's action plan in order to make up for whatever deficit is causing the absences. These remediation policies may include counseling and even behavioral therapy in order to modify the employee’s behavior to produce better outcomes.
What kind of things is are considered excused absences in this company? Family Leave Act is one of the excused absences allowed. Any absence due to illness that is accompanied by doctor's note is also acceptable.
