The setting of the house almost explains how the story is going to be. “For there are hedges and walls and gates that lock” (486). It is that John the husband and the narrator physician is wanting to be so sure that she cannot get out and no one comes in. Also, in the late nineteenth century, people didn’t talk about mental illness’ such as depression and hysteria, which is what the narrator had, now known as post pardon depression. In the nineteenth century, physicians believed that the “rest cure” was the only way to cure the women with hysteria. When one had to undergo the rest cure the individual is told not to have any mental stimulation, cannot be active or be around others, “Quiet alone, standing well back from the road, quite three miles from the village” (486). …show more content…
The bedroom was very big and open, but also confined and restricted, “For the windows are barred… and there are rings and things in the walls” (487), and the bed were bolted down. One might think that this room was previously used for people with mental illness that needed to be restrained. The narrator wanted a room that was downstairs, but her husband made her stay in the one upstairs, the reader may consider that John wanted her in the room upstairs because of the bares on the window and the rings on the walls just in case her illness worsened. The wallpaper was a dingy yellow that the narrator hated more than anything, “I never saw a worse paper in my life” (487). The narrator at first hates the wallpaper, but the more she looks at it the more she finds it fascinating, the more she is intrigued by the many patterns and the color that the wallpaper has.
