Rajeev Jorapur, CIO, Mercedes Benz India Pvt. LTD, was to oversee the installation of IT infrastructure system at the new plant. An internal study at MBI had forecast an eight fold increase in production and sales volume. The environment was so bullish that co decided to develop 25% of the land in the first phase with an investment of $35 million. The rest of the land for earmarked for future expansion. The IT relocation project involved managing the physical shifting of the servers, equipment and user desktops from the old location to the new one. The shifting involved a choice. MBI could take a downtime straight away but they could be a risk that downtime might be extended due to unforeseen events like a server failing to boot up. Alternatively MBI could develop a temporary parallel system at the time of actual shifting to avoid any unforeseen event but it would involve technological challenges and higher cost. MBI data centre accommodated various kinds of servers- file servers, network servers, print servers and so on. More than 50 servers were used in the co’s production environment and 25...

...Tariff refers to a pricing option or pricing plan that includes a valid combination or set of pricing components. Price is cost/value per unit or item. Prices are usually fixed per time period (eg Rs/year, Rs/kW/year2 or Rs/day) or variable per quantity of electricity used (eg Rs/kWh, Rs/kW/year or Rs/kVA/year). Chargeable quantity is the number of units or items. Charge is the price multiplied by the chargeable quantity. Aggregate Revenue Requirement is the Revenue requirement of the Licensee for recovery of allowable expenses and return on capital, through tariffs, pertaining to his Licensed Business. 3. Costing The goal of the MERC regulations is to to regulate tariffs of power generation, transmission and distribution and to protect the interests of the consumers and other stakeholders. While MERC has designed regulations to handle tariffs for any kind of utility service, the focus here is on electricity distribution utilities within India. 4.2 What exactly is a Tariff? Rather than a list of prices, a tariff should be thought of as an algorithm that generates a customer's bill from information about their energy use. Given the necessary input data and the bill calculation algorithm, a variety of prices can be defined as needed. The key thing to remember is that the price of electricity depends on...

...The Count of Monte Cristo is set just before the Hundred Days War and during the reign of King Louis. Dumas’ found inspiration for the novel from his acquaintance with Jerome Bonaparte’s son, whom Dumas’ took on educational trips, during one of those trips he saw the deserted island of Monte Cristo, and quickly resolved to write a novel about it. A huge inspiration for Dumas’ was the true story of Pierre Picaud, who lived in Paris in 1807. He was engaged to a woman, was soon to be married, when four of his jealous friends made false accusations against him as being a spy for England. He was imprisoned for seven years and befriended, who left him a great treasure in Milan. In 1814, upon Picaud’s release, he spent ten years plotting revenge against his former. At his death, Picaud had related his life story to Jacques Peuchet, which was published in a newspaper. The fact that Picaud stayed in seven years is not really too shocking – many political prisoners were forgotten about, though they normally stayed for only a year. The Count of Monte Cristo is an adventure novel about a young man name Edmond Dantes, who is betrayed for many reasons of jealousy and in the end receives his vengeance. The story begins in 1815; Dantes is promoted to captain of the ship, Pharaon, and is engaged to Merecedes. One of his fellow shipmates becomes jealous of his promotion and Mercedes cousin is jealous for her love for Dantes. Both the men get together to frame Dantes as one of Napoleon’s agents...

...We are increasingly becoming aware of how the advertisers are talking to us. It comes to a point where our mind naturally filters out what is unnecessary and irrelevant. This makes the advertiser’s role more challenging in effectively engaging the audience. GETTING INTIMATE WITH THE AUDIENCE They call it ‘Brand Wars’ and out there on the battlefield, advertisers are fighting but not against one another. The battle is for the appropriate positioning within the consumers’ minds. It is said that the easiest way of getting into a person’s mind is to be the first. Second place does not go very far in terms of being remembered in the brand wars. However, the reality is such that we now live in a world where we are presented with far greater choices for products and services, than ever before. Whilst, we have greater information at our disposal to digest, we at the same time are becoming very time-poor wanting almost on-demand information. Despite the doom and gloom of product or service overload out there, there’s still hope. The key is to get intimate with the audience. People may buy products or services but what they are really purchasing is a sense of feeling. Lets take the purchase of a car for an example. People buy a Toyota for reliability; a BMW to convey achievement; a Volvo because safety is the priority. Drill further down, people purchase a 2 door coupe because they want to feel sexy; a 4WD because they have a sense of adventure (in some cases!); a roadster for...
