Our organization Nature Iraq does really important work to support the Mesopotamian Marshlands. Our work has changed the environment for the better. For thousands of years, the marshlands influenced the culture by giving the animals an amazing habitat. For example, the fish get the perfect water to swim in and live a perfect life. Mammals can also have a great habitat like the nice grass and beautiful trees and water to drink. The Marshlands are perfect for animals, but mostly are important to the people and tribes living there. The Marshlands gives people reeds to build their houses. All of the supplies they get in the Marshlands helps open job opportunities and trade. The Marshlands also give people water from the rivers and in those rivers …show more content…
That water was transferred to the rivers they had full of water through the canals to the ocean. After that, they had instead of a green, lush, and beautiful Marshland, they had a dry, hot, plain desert, which changed the culture by taking away their resources that they needed 100%. When Saddam Hussein drained the water, it affected transportation because, without the water, they can’t use their boats they made to get to the other side of the Marshland and gather materials. Also, they couldn’t gather fish because the water was drained. Where there is no water, fish can’t live there and when there’s no fish, the people can’t eat. It also affected the mammals because of the same reason of the fish, if they can’t drink water, they will dehydrate and the people can’t have food or materials. After this destruction, the population dropped to 250,000 to just only a few thousand. Their Marshland shrunk to only 10% of its original size.
That’s when our organization, Nature Iraq, stepped in. We changed the geography by filling the canals with water again, which changed the culture by getting their water, fish, mammals, and reeds back. When Saddam Hussein was evacuated from power after a war in Iraq, a man named Azzam Alwash stepped in and re-flooded the Marshland and restoring the
