4 Variables: The Elderly and Epidemiology When it comes to the elderly in terms of epidemiology, there are many variables that come into play. Now, some of these variables are easier said than done. Some variables include pre-screening and regular check-ups once one hits a certain age. Another one would be automatic refills that are personally delivered to the clients. To follow that would be lowered prices on medicine that is known to be prescribed more often than not to those over a specific age. Last but not least is family involvement. These are just a few variables that could have a big impact long term. For starters, pre-screening and regular check-ups could change the epidemiology among the elderly. There are some medical issues that plague a majority of elderly people. With that in mind, a good variable would be to start doing screenings early, thus saving time and any future medical ailments. For example, a lot of elderly people develop arthritis; if tests and x-rays were done over a period of time, the prolonged discomfort for the client would be greatly shortened (McMurray, J.J., Stewart, S). Through regular check-ups, the elderly patient and doctor can stay abreast of any pre-existing or developing health issues. The epidemiology among the elderly could be stopped, if medical issues were caught early-on through pre-screening. One major reason for epidemiology among the elderly is lack of consistent medication (Murray, C and Lopez, A). By that I mean that elderly people are often on a fixed or very limited income. As a result some may have to choose from getting their medicine or
