The Mexican-American War was from 1846 to1848; it marked the first U.S. armed conflict. Mexico’s militarily was unprepared against the expansionist-minded administration of U.S. President James K. Polk, who believed the United States, had a manifest destiny to expand United States territory, but also was destined for westward expansion. United States declined to unite as one country because Texas political interests were against slavery states. Texas gained its independence from Mexico in 1836. When James K. According to Ernesto Chavez the Mexico press wrote, “Among Mexicans is whether or not the government has the positive resource for such, war and whether these resources would be able to compete with those of the North”(pg. 63). Mexico was getting prepared for the war with United States and the press critics if Mexico had enough resource to fight the war with United States. Manuel Mier y Teran wrote a letter detailing conditions in Mexico’s northern province to the Mexican minister of war. He suggested influenced the Mexican government to limit American immigration to Texas in April 1830 and caused tensions that would lead to the establishment of the Lone Star Republic. Manuel States that “if war should break out, it would be expedient to suppress it in a single campaign a less expensive method than to be always on the defensive”(pg. 55).
