Creative Practice • What argument is Heisler making about Americans response to the Iraq war and casualties? From the photograph it is hard to really see the expressions on the American’s faces that are on the airplane. However, it seems like some of the American’s expressions expose feelings of sadness and confusion. The argument Heisler makes seems to be that American’s are confused on where the Iraq War stands today, and the casualties evoke sadness because the man in the coffin can easily be a loved person they know in the war. • What types of arguments might you construct that would use this image as visual evidence? One argument can be that war causes not only physical but emotional anguish. War does not only effect those on the front lines, but war can effect anyone or anything connected to the war like families, cities, governments, and so on. The sadness seen on the American’s faces can be used as visual evidence of the effects war can cause; even though, the Americans are not actually apart of the war or necessarily know the man in the coffin. Another argument can be that American’s should be more involved with the news on war. Because the image shows the American’s look confused and surprised too, the coffin on the plane does not only sadden them. Thus, there can be a argument on American’s blind side to war, and Americans not really knowing the truth until war effects them personally. The people on the plane probably do not care about the Iraq War, but the placement of a coffin on the same plane as them make them think maybe a loved one is in that coffin coming back home in a wooden box. These are two possible arguments that can be interpreted from the photograph. • What other sorts of images or evidence would you use to develop your argument? To help develop my
