MGT/230 Week 1

Functions of management

Management, or the successful operation of a business or organization, can be simply described as the implementation of processes and procedures in order to solve problems in a productive and resourceful manner. This process can be carried out by means of what are commonly designated as the utilities or functions of management. The four common functions are: planning, organizing, leading and controlling which have the projected outcome of making use of any businesses available assets and resources in such a way that its mission statement and goals can be acceptably accomplished.
The first and possibly most important step of managing an organization or business is the planning step. This function of management involves predicting the potential course the organization will be directed toward in upcoming months and years and coordinating specific routes that need to be followed in order to reach the businesses full potential. Planning is a methodical activity that establishes who will carry out a specific job, when that job or task needs to be performed and the manner in which it should be carried out. The planning phase of business management is a comprehensive program that concerns impending plans for specific actions. “Planning is concerned with the future impact of today's decisions. ...Decision Making MGT 230 University of Phoenix Decision Making There are have been several times in my life that I have had to make a decision that would affect both myself and my family both personally and professionally, but there is one career and life change specifically that I will focus on in this paper and discuss the outcome of my decisions and how it has carried into my life today.   When I graduated from High School, I was offered a full ride scholarship to play football at Trinity International University (Trinity) in Deerfield, IL.  Initially I declined the offer as I was unsure if that was what I wanted to do, but decided that I needed to give it a shot.  So I moved to IL the summer of 2004.  Unfortunately, I blew my knee out the first month I was there and was career ending.  Although the knee injury was disappointing, it wasn't all that bad as I was able to make some connections with a few individuals that own a trading firm that trade on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, which at the time, trading was very intriguing to me, so the connection was very important.  I decided to move back home to AZ. In April 2006, I was presented with a job opportunity in Chicago, IL to trade on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange with the contacts that I created when I was at Trinity.  At this time, I lived in Phoenix, AZ, which is where I was born and raised, so despite how incredible the opportunity was and how excited I may have been, I had responsibilities...

...Planning Paper MGT/230 May 28, 2012 Week II Assignment Page 1 Planning Paper As assuming the role as a executive for a major company such as BP you can often expect to prepare presentations and present them for the board of directors. When you are in the meetings it’s generally about updates and informing the board members of the organization’s direction and potential changes that may be implemented. The first thing that has to happen is that the two structures of differentiation and integration will have to come together in efforts to help with the planning phase of this project. The goals of BP Oil Company are to become the world’s number one supplier of oil and to be the wealthiest organization in the oil industry. However there are a few other competitors that the company has to stay in competition with, such as Amoco Oil Company, and Wa-Wa, Exxon Mobile Gas Company as well as Sunoco, Gulf Gas and a few other local gas stations. Each state in the Unites States happens to have their own local gas stations some are the small “mom and pop” type of business within a rural town or area. And in the urban and suburban localities there are a lot of franchises of BP oil called Valero and a different mixture of the other competitors as well. Alongside of those franchises BP is the companies name and the goal is to start a better form of marketing and...

Demonstrative Communication

...Decision-Making Process Paper Tina Felder MGT/230 December 12, 2011 For this assignment I am going to discuss the steps my fiancé and I took in coming to the decision to move to Louisiana. Jerry and I had been together for one and a half years before we started really talking about relocating. Don’t get me wrong, the notion did not come out of the blue. He would make comments like, “I may live here (here being South Carolina) but my home is in Marrero” and “I sure would love to move back home (once again, home being Marrero).” I did not won’t to move from the place I had called home for ten years but I, or shall I say we, made the decision to do a lot of research before just packing up and hitting the road. The first step was to research the job markets in each of our fields of employment. I searched The Times Picayune (local newspaper) classified website, Careerbuilder.com, Snagajob.com, and Monster.com. In doing so, we discovered that there were plenty of openings for mechanics, managers, and office staff. I did comparisons between the job I was doing as a receptionist/classified ad representative for the local newspaper getting paid $8.25 per hour to openings I had found during my research and found that the rate of pay being offered was almost 9% more than my current salary. (Salary.com, 2011) The second step was to research the schools and the school districts. We narrowed the number of schools based on graduation percentage, program offerings, and diversity of...
