In this summary I will determine the motivational strategy or strategies that would be appropriate for each employee Riordan Manufacturing who was chosen for self-assessments. I will describe how the strategy selected connects to one or more of the motivational theories described in our text.
Elizabeth is a strong employee who is overall satisfied with her job and has a self-awareness regarding her attitude, adaptability and ability to get a job done in a timely manner. Elizabeth’s area of opportunity for growth is being able to stay focused on the tasks at hand. We plan to create a task list in which she can stay focused on what needs to be accomplished within her work day. The theory we chose to motivate her through is Herzberg’s Two-Factor Theory of Motivation. According to Herzberg the hygiene factors can only be used as motivational factors that yield positive satisfaction. These factors will be called satisfiers. Psychological needs that lead to these satisfiers are recognition, sense of achievement, responsibility, and how meaningful the work is to be done (Robbins & Judge, 2011).
Bobby has a strong ability to stay focused and remain on task and finishes projects on time. Bobby is overall dissatisfied with his job. In order for Bobby to feel accomplished he must stay on a project and have something to stay focused on. We will create a plan for Bobby that includes having an alternative work arrangement in place. For Bobby, like Elizabeth, we will create a core list with times so that he can have something to focus on visually. We will allow for “flextime” in his schedule so that he can finish up incomplete tasks (Robbins & Judge, 2011). The theory we chose to motivate Bobby through is McGregor’s Theory X and Theory Y. To achieve objectives we will have management follow up on Bobby and use a form of coercion (theory x) to help produce results. In
