...hysteria. The blight this casts on society according to New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, entertainer Bill Cosby, and writer Tony Judt, is caused by ourselves, creating these race and religious identities in order to feel safer, blame others for own problems, and an attempt to make a perfectly imperfect world uniform. After the terrorist attacks on September 11th 2001, Americas view on Muslim society drastically changed, Muslim Americans went from neighbors and citizens, to potential enemy combatants in the eyes of an overwhelming amount of Americans. Determining whether or not someone was a Muslim became of paramount importance to Americans. Citizens, who were once doctors, lawyers, and politicians especially, now had to identify themselves as a Muslim doctor, Muslim Lawyer, or the dreaded Muslim Politician. It was this type of fear that promoted the controversy over whether Mosque being built near the former site of the twin towers should stand; to which Mayor Bloomberg said “Let us not forget that Muslims were among those murdered on 9/11, and that our Muslim neighbors grieved with us as New Yorkers and as Americans. We would betray our values and play into our enemies’ hands if we were to treat Muslims differently than anyone else. In fact, to cave to popular sentiment would be to hand a victory to the terrorists, and we should not stand for that.” (Michael 1). The popular sentiment Coon 2 Bloomberg speaks of is the anti-Muslim sentiment felt by a large majority of Americans...

...Chapter 1 As the world watched the World trade center came under attack, they watched in disbelieve, astonishment, and heartbroken as they wonder would their love ones and friends make it out safely and people they did not know to make it out. September 11, 2001, marked an important piece of history in the lives of many Americans; it signified the day that many America would come to realized that this country would now be fighting an ongoing war with the Islamist militant group Al-Qaeda. As the then Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, went about his day that morning, not expecting the city of New York to come under attack by terrorist, led to the testing of his true strength of a leader. It was his obligations at that moment provide guidance, lead, motivate, make quick decisions to assure residences of New York that everything was going to be fine and they all would work together as a collective group to overcome this tragedy that was done on them. This event showed the level of uncertainty that a nation faces and an organization. Even though this event was never expected to happen the mayor still had made preparation for this type of uncertainty that took place. Critical decisions had to be made on the spot and it was up to the mayor to make sure that these decisions were executed in a manner in which it would help to resolve some of the immediate concerns and problems. Once he was able to get a handle of the situation and saw how bad and inhumane it was he then had to provide the directions...

...Bloomberg and Koch Deeply Split Over Blame on Fiscal Ills Who is to blame for the financial status of our country? That question brought current New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and former Mayor Edward Koch at odds. Bloomberg, who was a very successful billionaire before running for mayor, nonchalantly kind of dismissed the question by saying “it’s entertaining to go and to blame people….but it doesn’t get better by complaining about it”. He was referencing to the protestors of Occupy Wall Street. Koch on the other hand, took a view point from the community instead by saying how “there’s something wrong with a kid who steals a bike going to jail and someone who steals millions paying a fine.” He sees how the ones doing the real damage in this city tend to get away with things that disrupt the financial state of this country, while other crimes tend to receive harsher punishment. Later in the argument Bloomberg says the banks are not to blame for the crisis, rather it should be the Congress taking the burden because they were the ones who forced certain deals to get done which are now hampering us. While Koch disagreed, saying the banks should be the taking the blame because they abused their relationship with the customers and that is the reason they have been getting fined. And again he added how a fine is not enough, and would like to see them punished criminally. In this debate, I believe both current and former mayor have good points on who is to blame for...

...Why Citizens Should Have Guns Those in agreement with strict gun control laws argue that guns are too easy to purchase. One can purchase a firearm at a gun show relative easily. The Bureau of alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives reports that 30 percent of guns involved in federal illegal gun trafficking investigations are connected to gun shows (Project of the City of New York. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. Copyright 2009). It also a fact that guns kills, especially children. Every day, eight American children and teenagers die from gun violence. More than 29,000 people are killed by guns in the U.S. each year. One major reason for these deaths is easy access to guns (Marian Wright Edelman President, Children's Defense Fund). These are very good reasons for stricter gun control laws; however, there are arguments that support the other side of this argument. Data show that the areas of our country with the most draconian restrictions on firearms have the highest levels of crime. Criminals, by definition, break the law. Excessive firearm laws only restrict the rights of law-abiding citizens (New York Times upfront Magazine —U.S. Senator Larry Craig Republican of Idaho). Gun control laws are written to protect the innocent and the law abiding citizen, stricter laws may prove to hurt the very citizens it is designed to protect. We are fortunate to live in a country who’s Founders valued this critical right enough to protect it. They were able to bear arms...

...solemn moments and a continuing debate over the place of guns in society. Tom Sullivan was part of an observance at a state park Friday, where volunteers read aloud thousands of names of victims of gun violence. His son, 27-year-old Alex Sullivan, died in the Century 16 theater on July 20, 2012. Pay tribute to the victims "A guy walked into a movie theater with a 100-round drum, and one second my son was watching a movie and the next second he was dead," Sullivan said. Aurora victims are getting married The ceremonial reading, which lasted more than 10 hours, ended at 12:28 a.m. Saturday, the moment when the shooting began one year earlier. The event was part of the "No More Names" bus tour, sponsored by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns. Carlee Soto came to mark the Aurora killings, although she lost her sister five months later. First-grade teacher Victoria Soto, 27, was killed in the elementary school massacre in Newton, Connecticut. "Every situation is different," Carlee Soto said. "From a movie theater to an elementary school to a church, it's all different. But we all carry the same grief, and we all share the wanting to change our gun laws." A handful of gun rights advocates peacefully protested the event Friday. One of them, Rob Blancken, said all Coloradans should remember the tragedy. "It's also a tragedy that a firearm was not allowed to be used inside that theater that may have prevented that tragedy...

...If you want to get a glimpse into the mind of New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, it can be summed up in one word: liberalism. Bloomberg is a big time liberal, not so remote from the leftist Obama Administration, evidenced by his support for abortion, support for Obama’s health care reform bill, banning smoking, and so on.. Recently, Bloomberg has attempted to pass a bill that would limit soft drinks in any eating establishment to 16 oz. per portion, and if this law is not abided to, it will result in a penalty for that establishment. Bloomberg seeks to defend the law on the basis that obesity is rampant in American society, and so he’s drafting the law for the ‘common good’, for you, ‘The People’. He seems so concerned about a healthy society for the American people, doesn’t he? Well, guess what? He doesn’t give anything about your personal civil rights. He makes health a rather significant issue, but has total disregard for morality – nobody wants to be living with morally sick people, right? While obesity isn’t contagious and morally corrupt, homosexuality is, and once it is permitted for one couple, it becomes permitted for everybody else, brainwashing the moral minds of the American people. The question that bothers practically everyone is that how can Bloomberg be so hypocritical as to be concerned more with health issues, and yet allow this sexual perversion to corrupt society?...

...of the film. Twelve people were killed and fifty-eight people were injured in the incident. As one of the most serious shooting cases in the U.S., the issue of gun control has once again attracted public attention, rushing people into pro and con camps. The controversy around the issue is whether it is better to strengthen the laws for gun control or not. Major media around the world have made extensive covers and reports of the Denver shooting case; they also joined the discussion of gun control because it has significant effects for people’s lives and safety. There are three articles from different media responses to the hot topic. The article titled “Gun-control, gun-rights groups’ ready for renewed debate after Colorado shooting” by Michael Martinez was published on CNN.COM. CNN is one of the most influential global media and authoritative news sites, which can be seen or read by over 100 million U.S households and viewers in over 212 countries. This article notes that both sides were engaged in a renewed debate about the issue of gun control in the aftermath of the shooting tragedy that happened at a Colorado movie theater. In this debate, an appeal is being continually made for placing strict restrictions on gun control by Dan Gross, the President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. He claimed that elected leaders ought to act immediately to protect American people from life-threatening problems. In the opposition camp, the director of Gun Owners of America,...

Millions for new street sign which were not needed. Millions for bike lanes which will be gone when his terms is over. Not to mention $20 billion contract to his friend for seawall when our military are doing it for free. Do people even realize how much $20 billion is. That is the total damages cause by Sandy!!! You can knock down all the houses in Staten Island and rebuild it for $20B!!! Do what our mayor tell you, or he will sue you? Who do he think he is? He was elected to represent the people. We are not his slaves. What a joke .Don't get it twisted, Liu only rejected them because Bloomberg pushed for them and Liu wants New Yorkers to think he's honest or fair. This is another round of the political grandstanding that New York City is so famous for and people around here are tired of. Don't think for a second that Liu wouldn't approve and push for same dubious projects for his handlers, masters and campaign contributors. There's no such thing as a honest or a good politician, they are all scumbags - it's a pre-requisite for that job. A new report reveals the number of people living in homeless shelters has surpassed 50,000 people a night-- a record high for the city and a 19 percent jump from last year. Back in September, Patrick Markee of the Coalition for the Homeless commented on the rising numbers and said, "Not since...

As for Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s recent proposal to ban the sale of supersized sugary drinks in New York City, Kent did not say wether he thinks the broader sentiment targetting colas for obesity will impact the business over the long term. But he said that singling out sodas for blame doesnt make sense. “There are better ways to address concerns about obesity,” he said nothing that Coca-cola has worked to reduce calories in school drinks and put clearer calorie information on the front...
