The media article “Michael Brown: Stereotypes and Racial Disparities in Police Killings” discusses the case of Michael Brown and many of the reasons why deaths between white cops and black civilians are so high. Leland Ware, the author of said article, did his best to not be bias during this article. He proceeded to back up his point of white cops being cruel and unusual to black americans by providing informations from a study conducted by academic researchers. Ware (2014) writes “studies prepared by academic researchers have found that African Americans are four times more likely than whites to die during or after an encounter with a law enforcement officer” (7). Brown was unarmed and did not place any immediate threat to Officer Wilson’s life. An academic researcher conducted a simulation and had the study participants shoot a series of different races, unarmed and armed and measured their reaction times. The amount of African Americans, unarmed, shot versus the other races were exponential. Ware (2014) concludes the following: Prejudice and stereotypes are the products of ordinary perceptions, categorization, learning, memory and judgment. Categorization is the process by which ideas and objects are recognized, differentiated and understood. Categorization is an essential cognitive process that allows individuals to relate new experiences to old experiences; the unfamiliar to the familiar.
