Paradise Lost

...Paradise Lost By John Milton The Book note Table of Contents Introduction Cast of Characters Plot Summary An Analysis of Major Characters Satan Adam Eve Chapter Summary and Analysis Book 1 Book 2 Book 3 Book 4 Book 5 and 6 Book 7 Book 8 and 9 Book 10 Book 11 and 12 Symbols and Themes Quotes The Quiz Introduction John Milton was born in London on December 9, 1608. He was the son of a successful Protestant merchant, and was provided with an excellent education that included the opportunity to travel widely throughout Europe. He was fluent in a number of classical as well as modern languages, including Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Aramaic, Spanish, Italian, French and Dutch. In 1625, he began his attendance at Cambridge University with the intention of becoming a clergyman in the Church of England, but was disillusioned by what he considered the arrogance and ignorance of his fellow students. He decided that his true calling was to serve God and his country as an author and poet. Inspired by Roman poets of antiquity, and particularly Virgil, Milton aspired to create a great epic poem in the English language. He considered two other distinctly British topics for his epic—the story of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, and the military exploits of the general Oliver Cromwell—before settling on the Biblical story of Adam and Eve and their fall from God’s grace through disobedience. Milton was politically active throughout his life, and was outspoken...

Temptation

...Temptation All of us experience temptations. So did the Savior, but He “gave no heed unto them” (D&C 20:22). Similarly, we do not have to yield simply because a temptation surfaces. We may want to, but we don’t have to. 3. Satan, who is called the tempter (Mt. 4:3; 1 Thess. 3:5), is out to get us. He doesn’t care how spiritual we are, or how secure we are in our Christian homes; he is going to tempt us to sin hoping to lead us away from God and our families. FIRST, TO RESIST TEMPTATION, WE MUST UNDERSTAND WHAT TEMPTATION IS. Temptation is an enticement or an allurement to sin against the will of God. 2. James explains temptation this way: (Jam. 1:13-15) “When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.” 3. These verses teach several things about temptation. a. First, God does not tempt us to sin, in fact, (1 Cor. 10:13) explains that God provides us with a way out of temptation. God allows us to be tempted in order to refine our faith and to help us grow in our dependence upon Him. b. Second, temptation in of itself is not sin. Jesus was tempted, however, He was without sin. Temptation only becomes sin when we give into the temptation. 4. Temptation is a process...

I Just Simply Dont No What to Say

...English essay Soon I was in deep sleep. I was woken up by a very strange light. The light was golden and was bright. There was no other light in the room except that one and it looked like it came from one person. Well, you can’t call it a person I’d say. It was about the normal average height of an adult. It had pointed ears and slightly upturned eyes. It had a small wooden stick, probably a wand in her hand and a brownish bag in the other. It was wearing a colourful frock and her hair was tied in a bun. She was also wearing a necklace. It clearly was a female, whatever it was. She looked kind of an elf, the ones you read in Artemis Fowl but soon after I realized that she was a fairy. She was shocked to see me as I was to see her. Then I slowly gained the courage to ask her who I she was and what was she doing in my room. She was a faltering to answer. I told her there was nothing to be scared of and that she could tell me everything freely, I wouldn’t tell it to anyone. She said that she would tell the truth but on the condition that I wouldn’t tell it to anyone. I agreed. She said that she was sent from heaven and she was the new fairy of distributing dreams. So as she was new she was also quite inexperienced. As she was like a new “species” that I had seen probably discovered I was curious. I asked her more. She said that she was Ophelia and she was quite popular in heaven as she was married to the Archangel Gabriel. She was distributing dreams in our colony and my house...

My Paper

...Thoughts As they get closer to deliberating on this case the victim’s parents have requested to have a special prosecutor for this case. I read this article and I see a hurting family and I understand why they feel this way. At the same time I see that there son was not the model citizen and he was already in trouble with the law. This does not justify being shot and killed but that cannot be changed. The events of that fateful day are already history. I don’t feel that changing the prosecutor will have a great change in the outcome of this case. Conclusion Many people have a strong opinion of what took place the night of the shooting. It has been said that there was an altercation between Michael Brown and officer Darren Wilson. Other witnesses state that Michael Brown had his hands up in surrender while he was shot multiple times in the back. What no one knows is if officer Darren Wilson feared for his life and if he had probable cause. Once this case goes to court the truth will come out. I just feel that because a white man shot and killed a black man it is made a racial event. I am Hispanic and if I felt in fear of losing my life I would not hesitate to shot and kill that person causes that fear. It becomes a racial issue and people begin to riot and act crazy. It all goes back to the lack of education and the poor up brining of people. These are my thoughts...

Ezekiel's Description Of Satan

...Satan Satan is an evil being who is often represented as an ugly, red demon with a tail and horns. In reality, although he is a demon, he is beautiful. He was originally from heaven and his activity and demonic army are constantly on the verge of causing chaos. Satan was originally created as an angel with a magnificent appearance. At one point in time, he was one of God’s favorites. Ezekiel 28:12-15 talks about Satan being perfect until God found him immoral. Though Ezekiel is addressing these words to the King of Tyre, they are ultimately directed towards Satan. He is the creator of pride and cruelty. Many Christians do not accept this interpretation of Satan to be true. They consider this description to be a highly symbolic representation of the Tyre king, though some people think that this passionate expression includes a well-known myth about an ancient being who lived in the Garden of God until he was banished for his pride and rebellion (DeHaan 11). It is unlikely that the inspired prophet would include a myth into his message of judgement. It is not uncommon to see double references in the Bible, such as Ezekiel calling attention to Satan, the motivator of sin to the earthly monarch. Ezekiel announced that originally, Satan was wise and beautiful. He depicts Satan in Eden, describing him being lavished in jewels. The King James Version of the Bible tells of the tambourines and flutes that were prepared for him on the day of his creation (DeHaan 12). Considering this...

While yet we live, scarce one short hour perhaps, Between us two let there be peace, both joining, As joined in injuries, one enmity Against a foe by doom express assigned us, That cruel serpent: on me exercise not Thy hatred for this misery befall’n, On me already lost, me than thyself More miserable; both have sinned, but though Against God only, I against God and thee, And to the place of judgment will return, There with my cries importune Heaven, that all The sentence from they head removed may light On me, sole cause to thee of all this woe, Me me only just object of his ire.” At the end of “Paradise Lost” by John Milton, Eve makes a speech to an irate Adam imploring him not to leave her and claiming that she accepts full responsibility for the fall of them both. As a rhetorical performance, Eve creates the effect she desires because she is able to bring Adam to submissiveness and commiseration. This persuasiveness that she uses is a talent that she learned from Satan while he was tempting her to eat the fruit. Satan is a very persuasive character. He...

Adam and Eve: Set Up to Fall

...Adam and Eve: Set Up to Fail In the story paradise lost Adam and Eve were forbidden by God to eat the fruit of knowledge. This was their only rule in the garden, but despite this they both end up giving in to temptation and eating the fruit of knowledge. This is because Adam and Eve were set up by God to fall. First off, Adam and Eve are created only shortly before the fall. This lack of age means that they are not fully developed or mature and that they lack the knowledge to stay out of trouble. We as humans learn from mistakes and they had not made any mistakes yet to learn from. On top of that they were swayed by the devil to eat the fruit of knowledge, and due to the fact that the devil disguised as a serpent was the only socialization they received besides each other you can see why they believed what the devil said. Also in a world where there are only two people and they have never met another person who lied or deceived them, why wouldn't they trust the devil? In fact they know so little that when Eve first meets Satan in his serpent form she questions the fact that a serpent is talking: How Cam'st thou speakable of mute and how To me so friendly grown above the rest Of brutal kind that daily are in sight? (9.563-565) but after a quick “explanation” from Satan: Tempting so nigh, to pluck and eat my fill I spared not, for such pleasure till that hour At feed or fountain never had I found. Sated at length ere long I might perceive Strange alteration...

Eve's Dreams in Paradise Lost

...The Significance of Eve’s Dreams in Paradise Lost Some of the most telling aspects of John Milton’s Paradise Lost are in the few instances in which the reader is privy to the contents of Adam and Eve’s dreams, and these instances contribute significantly to the outcome and overall meaning of the poem. Milton’s use of dreams in Paradise Lost serves several distinct purposes. These passages allow us to glean insight to the inner workings of both Adam and Eve’s subconscious, as well as to God’s respective plans for them. Adam and Eve’s dreams illustrate the differences inherent within them and their very different relationships with God. Eve’s dreams are particularly dramatic in their substance, and in their drastic contrast before and after the fall. I propose that Milton’s use of dreams in Paradise Lost demonstrates that prelapsarian Eve could never have truly comprehended good and evil. All of Adam’s dreams in the poem are divinely inspired, while Eve’s first dream is induced by Satan, and her final, postlapsarian dream a vision from God that shows her that she will go on to bear the “promised seed” (12.623) that will deliver salvation. This essay will examine the different ways in which Adam and Eve receive information and how it affects their understanding and, consequently, their actions. We are first introduced to Adam and Eve as Satan is observing them in the Garden of Eden, acting as the first anthropologist in order to ascertain how to bring about their demise. Satan...

Arnold Friend Symbolism

...In “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been” a dramatic story line shows the fall of a troubled child to a symbolic satan.  “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been” by Joyce Carol Oates, is a fictional short story that completes the truth that falling to sin seems pure at first but ultimately ends in the worst way.  Arnold Friend is symbolized as satan through the development of the plot, characterization, and point of view.     Oates foreshadows the fall of Connie to Arnold Friend by setting most of the story on a Sunday.  “One Sunday Connie got up at eleven- none of them bothered with Church” (Oates 2).  When Oates uses the words “none of them bothered with Church” it implies that Connie’s family is not religious and they do not care to be. Those who are religious know you need the protection and strength from God to stay away from sinister things; the same things Arnold Friend is leading Connie to do. Since Connie is not religious she opens herself up to Arnold Friend, the devil.  For Christians, Sunday is a day of rest and worship. It is ironic that the day Connie is suppose to be with God she is being consumed by the devil.  “Arnold Friend states ‘gonna get you baby’ as a way of letting Connie know once she steps down the path of sin, the devil is bound to get you” (Contreras).  Days prior to Sunday Connie goes out with her friends.  She tells her mom she is going shopping or to see a movie, when in reality she is going to meet boys.  Arnold Friend is always looming in...

...Joan of Arc or Jeanne d’Arc in French was born in a village which was part of eastern France in 1412. She was considered heroine of France and a Roman Catholic saint. Joan said she received visions of the Archangel Michael, Saint Margaret, and Saint Catherine instructing her to support Charles VII and recover France from English domination. At the time of Joan’s childhood, France was seriously divided with a lack of national unity. King Henry V of England had invaded France and defeated the French army. This famous victory over the French nobility left the country weak and divided. Under Charles leadership, French were without direction and real leader. When Joan of Arc came to the court she overwhelmed Charles with her passion and conviction. She was given control over an army and allowed to lead them into battle. Within a year Joan of Arc had led the French army to victories and many other towns were also liberated from English control. However a year later Joan was captured and sold to the English. The English and members of the French clergy decided to put her on trial for witchcraft.
