“JFK wanted to send a man to the moon… Obama wants to send a man to the woman’s restroom,” Texas Governor Greg Abbott once tweeted. As of today, the U.S. population has struggled in facing the dilemma of whether or not enabling transgenders to use the same bathrooms as the rest of society is beneficial. This dispute is also addressed through Michael Scherer’s article, “The Battle of the Bathroom”, in which the author demonstrates many professionals’ opinions of the ideal decision. As contended by many elites in Scherer’s article, transgenders should not be permitted to use the same bathrooms as the common gender-specified majority due to the fact that it generates humiliation/harassment within transgenders and it prompts discomfort to arise…show more content… For example, Scherer states that “the public bathroom may be shared, but it is no common space. It is a rare place of forced vulnerability, where our insecurities and excretions mix with the sounds and smells of strangers, where our individual and collective fears can linger” (33). It is already uncomfortable enough for many people when using the public restroom. In addition, by enabling transgenders to use the bathroom that they feel they belong in, the rest of civilization has to constantly stay alert of when a man/woman might barge into the bathroom, doubling the discomfort people already experience when using a public restroom. Moreover, Scherer demonstrated that “when a girls’ swim team encountered a bald person with facial hair and a waist towel leaving the ladies’ shower, they brought their concerns to the swim coach” (36). By allowing transgenders to use public bathrooms, changing rooms, etc., many people will be caught in a state of confusion on whether or not they had been exposed to a person of the opposite gender, causing uneasy feelings to arise among them. Others, such as Jayne Ellspermann (a principal), may contend that “the bottom line is that each student [including each transgender student] needs to feel secure and comfortable in the school that they’re going to attend” (Scherer 37). However, it is also immensely vital for people to comprehend the discomfort/insecurity regular students will feel if a transgender student were to be allowed to use the same bathrooms as them. Although it is important for transgenders to be comfortable in their environments, it is also extremely essential that all of the other students feel secure as well. Therefore, all-in-all, it is a fact that permitting transgenders to use public restrooms induces discomfort among the rest of the
