...Michael Henchard, an unemployed hay-trusser "of fine figure, swarthy and stern in aspect," his wife Susan, and their little child Elizabeth-Jane are wearily approaching the Wessex village of Weydon-Priors at the end of a late-summer day in the year 1826. When she looks at the child, Susan is pretty, but her face often has "the hard, half-apathetic expression" of one who expects the worst. They learn from a passer-by that there is no employment in the village. A fair is still in progress, and once the trio has arrived Michael attempts to enter a refreshment tent which advertises "Good Home-brewed Beer, Ale, and Cyder." However, Susan persuades him to enter the booth where "furmity" is sold, since the food is nourishing even if repulsive in appearance. In the tent Michael pays the furmity woman, "a haggish creature of about fifty," to spike his basin of furmity with large dosages of rum. He quickly finishes a number of well-laced portions and, in a "quarrelsome" mood, begins to bewail the fact that he has ruined his life by marrying too young. As the liquor takes hold, Michael offers his young wife for sale to the highest bidder. Susan, who has experienced his outrageous displays before, swears that if Michael persists, she will take the child and go with the highest bidder. She ignores the advice of "a buxom staylace dealer" and stands up for the bidding. Michael continues the bidding with renewed vigor and raises the price to five guineas for wife and child. The staylace dealer...

...Jessica Ibarra Professor Michael A. Behrens CINE 102 2 December 2013 Fight the Power Do the Right Thing directed by Spike Lee is a film centered on a series of subplots rather than one main plot. The characters each have their own narrative and helps give the movie substance. Although the conflict did not reveal itself until the movie nears the end, the personalities of the characters became evident through their use of language and body language. The attitudes of the characters became clear, as well as their actions which became almost predictable; what was not predictable was the sudden change of energy during the inciting incidence. When the riot occurs, we wonder how it built up to that particular scene. The characters and their background stories give rise to this ultimate turn of events. Though the characters’ random scenes were jumbled together throughout the whole movie, they were unified in the end when all the characters were involved during the inciting incidence—when the police officer killed Radio Raheem. With the death of Radio Raheem and an increasing rise to racial injustice, Spike Lee demonstrates a symbolic truth between polar opposites and its limitations to tolerance. In an article titled “Do the Right Thing” written by Hal Hinson, he argues, “Lee is attempting to explore the polarities of the inner city…by setting up a system of opposites -- black and white, love and hate, conciliation and violence, man and woman -- then sets them against each other...

...Michał Duch Vietcong - The Guerrilla Fighters The Vietnam War was extremely specific conflict. The Americans possessed enormous army, huge amounts of money to spare and latest technology inventions. Vietcong, on the other hand fought using underground tactics with an underground army without modern equipment and air support. Here comes up following issue, namely, why Americans had so many difficulties with defeating Vietcong? To begin with, Vietcong fought using specific strategy called “guerilla war” (it is a warfare based on military actions where small mobile forces prepare ambushes and fight using unexpected tactics). Vietnamese used different tricks to surprise and eliminate American troops and vehicles. They ambushed US patrols using booby traps and landmines, civilian towns were often full of skillfully planted bombs. Common practice used by Vietcong soldiers was mingling with peasants to confuse Americans. US soldiers had serious difficulties with identifying who was real enemy. Another commonly used Vietcong tactic was called “hanging onto the belts”. The aim of this method was to stay in short distance with Americans. As a result US soldiers could not call an artillery backup because there was a risk of killing ally units. Vietcong troops were significantly supplied by Russia and China. Both countries provided them with weapons and rockets. In order to transport equipment safely Vietnamese used The Ho Chi Minh...

...Intro During the 1980s, an empowered new generation of Black youth began to interpret the civil rights movement in a different, more direct way, far removed from the "I Have a Dream" Idealism of the 1960s. This movement was pioneered by Spike Lee's film Do the Right Thing, and the civil rights themed song Fight the Power composed by Public Enemy. In the Fight the Power music video, which was also directed by Spike Lee, Chuck D denounces the marches and speeches of the 60s and calls for more radical action, promising that "the young black America... ain't goin' out like that '63 nonsense." The clip documents a large rally in Brooklyn’s, Bed-Stuy against the racially motivated violence that had plagued the city. This landmark song and video are widely considered hip-hop greatest, and helped to mobilize a new youth culture with a civil rights movement of their own. The song became more than just a feature in a movie. Fight the Power means something big, refusing to let racism keep Black African Americans down. Furthermore, it's about not just talking the talk, but also walking the walk (Shmoop). In our dissertation, we will concentrate on why Spike Lee wanted to write Do the Right Thing and the message he wanted to send to America. Then, we’ll move into Public Enemy rising as civil rights leaders for black youth and their aggressive approach for equality along with their composition of Fight the Power. We’ll then shift into text and the meaning behind the lyrics of Fight the Power...

This could be a very costly process. What would happen if LIFO were no longer allowed? This is an even more important issue among many companies since it is estimated that about 36% of U.S. companies use LIFO (“Georgia Tech Financial Analysis Lab Releases LIFO Study,”IFRS.com). In the a study performed by Georgia Tech, they found that out of 30 sample companies, they estimated “that the cumulative taxes due on the switch to LIFO, to be paid over a four-year period, would total over $15 billion.” In an article, “Must LIFO Go to Make Way for IFRS?” by Michael J.R. ..."There is nothing natural about natural disasters". To call a disaster ‘natural’, means that it has occurred completely independent of the influence of humans. The damage caused by Hurricane Katrina, cannot solely be held accountable by a force of nature, however destructive. Human factors have had an equally damaging effect on the affected areas. It is clear to anyone studying natural disasters that, the difference between who lives and who dies depends largely if not completely on which side of the social divide you were born into. Reasons for evacuation and disaster preparation must be reviewed as these subjects are what caused the most damage. Many believed that the storm wasn’t a serious threat, this could be due to naivety and lack of education on the storm itself. While others, especially those lacking financial backing believed that taking a calculated risk was their best option, the risk of course being calculated by; cost and scepticism. While the richer demographic owned cars to evacuate, credit cards for supplies and refuge, and their immediate families were far more likely to have the resources available to support their evacuation. Governmental, NGO’s and Private Organisations are also held responsible for city preparedness. Firstly, transportation issues were raised when armed police restricted free movement across the bridge to Jefferson, this was mainly due to issues surrounding race, particularly against African-Americans. Secondly, having known about the...

...Michael Shermer is an intelligent, thoughtful, and well spoken orator. He begins with the discussion about his book The Moral Arc. The Moral Arc was named after Martin Luther King at his march from Selma to Montgomery. Michael Shermer renounces one of Theodore Parker’s quotes, “I do not pretend to understand the moral universe; the arc is a long one, my eye reaches but little ways; I cannot calculate the curve and complete the figure by the experience of sight; I can divine by conscience. And from what I see I am sure it bends towards justice”. Justice is what you make of it, five months after this quote was said, the Votings Rights Act was passed in 1965 in which it allowed every gender, every race, and who are a US citizen to vote. Shermer uses graphs, historical events and figures to back up his ideas. Shermer illustrates major historical events that have impacted in the past years that have impacted us now. In reference to the Voting Rights Act, we wouldn't be allowed to vote if Martin Luther King hadn't made it possible. In this paper, I will argue that one should agree with Shermers claim that every...
