History of Music Therapy

... Earliest references The earliest known reference to music therapy appeared in 1789 in an unsigned article in Columbian Magazine titled "Music Physically Considered." In the early 1800s, writings on the therapeutic value of music appeared in two medical dissertations, the first published by Edwin Atlee (1804) and the second by Samuel Mathews (1806). Atlee and Mathews were both students of Dr. Benjamin Rush, a physician and psychiatrist who was a strong proponent of using music to treat medical diseases. The 1800s also saw the first recorded music therapy intervention in an institutional setting (Blackwell’s Island in New York) as well as the first recorded systematic experiment in music therapy (Corning’s use of music to alter dream states during psychotherapy). Early Associations Interest in music therapy continued to gain support during the early 1900s leading to the formation of several short-lived associations. In 1903, Eva Augusta Vescelius founded the National Society of Musical Therapeutics. In 1926, Isa Maud Ilsen founded the National Association for...

Cold War

...I have to start by being completely upfront in the fact that prior to this assignment I knew little to nothing about the conflict with Russia and the Ukraine, so I had to do quite a bit of reading and watching news stories to get a good grasp on it. The biggest comparison that stuck out to me between the conflict now and the cold war is the sitting and waiting and the dancing around each other. By that I mean like in the cold war there is not a lot of military action going on right now but there is a lot of talk about who is doing what. By dancing I mean that something happens in the Ukraine like Putin cutting off a specific supply to parts of the Ukraine and then waits to see what other parts of the world are going to do. I did see quite a bit of critismism of Obama and his choosing not to do more (maybe it was the news outlet that I decided to follow) and part of me can understand that critisims. I think it is a feeling that a lot of people can have like do something now, why are we sitting back and waiting for things to get really bad when we could try and help now before it gets to that point. I think that a big difference between the cold war and now is the amount of knowledge that citizens have, like me when I started this assignment. I could pull out my computer and do 100s of different searches, or turn on the TV to any of the news outlets and get a feel for what is going on. During the cold war there was some technology but nothing like there is today so I think a...

Magic Johnson More Than an Average Athlete

...n my life, I had many people who I really admire from Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Sean Carter (Jay-z), and Robert Johnson. Others who have influenced me in my development of a person were my parents; my mother and my father were there for everything I have done in my life. The person who I model myself after is Earvin Johnson jr. also known as Magic Johnson. There are many reasons why but all really point to him defeated in adversity in many facets of life. In my point of view my life and his has some similarities and differences. Other than for athletics, he has more to offer then the average retired player. I also liked how he showed strength in the face of gloom and trouble. Johnson was born in Lansing, Michigan and had many siblings (2). In addition, he lived with his mother and father, his mother was a school janitor, and his father was a worker for and General Motors (2). Like many young children named after their parents, he had gained the nickname of “Junior” or “June bug” (2). In my similarities to him I to have many siblings, though not at the amount of nine but it was a number of three with myself being the eldest. Another thing that is a true similarity is Junior also my nickname because; I have my Father’s name. Unlike Johnson, I did not have his basketball ability. As a young child, he will practice daily at seven thirty and dribble his basketball using opposite hands just to have great ball control(2). Although not as talented as Johnson, I treat my knowledge...

Elizabeth should be very concerned about what to do after high school graduation because she controls her own destiny, whatever she wants to do, she can do it. She needs to enroll at a very good public/private university where she can excel and expand her knowledge in her field. I believe she wants to major in education, because she is taking AP English and is tutoring students in elementary school. Elizabeth is not only doing it to spice up her college application, she is doing it because that is what makes her happy; making kids eager to learn. The Four Collages Elizabeth got accepted to are: * University of Maryland at College Park * Towson University * Michigan State University * Penn State University These four universities are known for some of the best liberal arts program in the country. Portland

...Portland U. vs. Washington U. tonight this game tips at 10pm est. The line is -19 to Washington U. Washington U. is trying to convince the country that it's an elite team. UW has an elite player in Isaiah Thomas but UW has lost to the only 2 elite top ten programs they have played. They had a 7 point loss to Kentucky and 5 point loss to Michigan State. Portland is hardly in the same league with these programs but UW is going to need to take care of business tonight. While beating Portland by no means will justify UW as one of the best programs, losing to them could most certainly drop them out of the top 25. Portland U. while in a lesser conference is a good solid team. Luke Sikma is their best player at 6-8 and 12 ppg. This team can play with any small conference opponent but they have shown when they play the big boys they fold. Kentucky got them by 31 points and Washington State beat them by 16 points. WSU is un ranked but they are a nice team. This game is at Washington so that makes it tougher for Portland to come away with the upset. Going over the numbers: UW 95.7ppg to 71.9pg allowed. PORT 69.8ppg to 65.3ppg allowed. Offensive rebounds are going to be what helps UW win this game and win it big. While UW has hit 100 the last 2 games I don't see UW putting a hundred on Port but I do think they will be close. My score prediction is 91-69. Washington...

Nursing Theories.

...Nola Pender was born on August 16, 1941, in Lansing, Michigan. In 1964, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan, and in 1965, received her master's degree from the same university. She went on to Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, to earn a PhD in 1969. Her model emphasizes preventative health measures and outlines the important roles that nurses’ play in helping patients prevent illness by self-care and wise choices. Dr. Pender's theory differs from most other nursing theories in that it focuses on positive nursing interventions rather than on providing care after illness has occurred. Promoting optimal health is considered more important than preventing disease. According to the theory, nurses have a primary role in teaching patients to make healthy choices and care for themselves. If patients participate in their own care and make wise choices, they will have better health and be able to prevent many illnesses and diseases. Pender believed that a person's self-definition of health had more importance than a generalized designation of health. Health seeking behaviors can be influenced by cognitive-perceptual factors such as the importance of personal health to the individual, perceived advantages of healthy living and possible disadvantages of health promoting behavior. These factors can be further modified by other considerations including interpersonal influences, cultural factors and biological...

Nature vs Nurture

...Economics as a social science explains the behavior of consumers and producers. Both seek to satisfy their own preferences. Producers try to maximize profits. Consumers maximize their own utility, which normally includes cash income, creature comforts, and leisure time. The field of "public choice," a branch of economics, extends these basic findings to the world of politicians, voters, and interest groups.40 A brief public choice analysis explains many of the problems of the current system and points to parental choice as the solution. Public choice analysis assumes that politicians, although they have a variety of desires, try to maximize their ability to get re-elected. They therefore pay more attention to organized interest groups, the media, and segments of the population which actively participate in politics than to the public at large. This is not to say that politicians are immoral or operate against the wills of the voters. Rather, just as retailers court those customers who have the most to spend in their stores, politicians listen to those who have the most impact on their re-election. In politics, it is the squeaky wheel and, more particularly, the well-funded, influential wheel, that gets the grease. When this insight is applied to the current public school system, it is easy to see why "the system" as a whole has developed a resistance to competition. There is no organized lobby for parents concerned about their children’s performance.41 There are, on the...

...majority of pollution found in Great Lakes such as Lake Huron has been proven by many sources to be extremely harmful to the habitants of the water, species who use the water, and the water itself. These findings eventually provided enough evidence for an implementation of a legal pollution limit that is considered to be a tolerance level. To demonstrate the harmful reality of pollution in Lake Huron, a group of graduate students from Michigan State University studied the effects of pollution by observing the lake trout. According to an excerpt of their school thesis, they intended to “…analyze the tissue concentrations in lake trout…over a period of several years.” (Michigan State University, Enivroment 110). The study of this lake trout provided substantial evidence that more contaminated areas of the lake had a higher effect on the trout. The water pollution, caused by anything as small as a tin can or large as an old computer, provided enough harmful resources to sicken, weaken and in most cases kill the lake trout. (Michigan State University, Enivroment 110). These polluted areas are overlooked by a majority of people due to the façade of the lake’s natural beauty. However, underneath lies a more malevolent presence in the form of water pollution....
