In the organismal world, bacteria play a vital role at the root of the very existence of other microorganisms as they were among the first life forms to inhabit planet Earth. Bacteria are both beneficial and harmful for the human organism and the earth that encompasses us all. The best way to explain bacteria’s importance is to categorize it in two categories: how they help, and how they harm.
Some bacteria are not only helpful, but essential to sustain life. Many bacteria degrade harmful materials in soil so that it can be used by plants, and in turn used by humans. Many species of soil bacteria fix nitrogen; meaning they convert atmospheric nitrogen into nitrates, compounds that are readily absorbed by plants. Some of these bacteria live in colonies in the roots of legumes, such as peas, clover, and alfalfa. Various commercial processes depend on bacteria. Anaerobic bacteria that ferment certain substances are used in the production of vinegar and some drugs, and in the aging process of cheeses. Through genetic engineering, bacteria have become medically necessary. An example of the use of bacteria in drugs, is the creation of insulin. Diabetics are now able to use this created artificial source, thanks to bacteria.
Bacteria are more widely recognized for their harmful counterparts. Pathogens are commonly known as the bacteria that cause disease. Certain types of bacteria can have devastating effects on human health, animals, and plants. Bacterial infections such as typhoid fever were the cause of many deaths at one point in time.
