...Diego Marino Product Management September 12, 2012 Karen Twilmann Microsoft Canada Case The Microsoft Canada: Sales & Product Management working together case, exemplifies in an excellent manner what usually happens in an organization: the clash between the sales and marketing areas. The case introduces the different points of views of the Sales Manager (Doug Taylor) and the Group Product Manager (Barry Zeidenberg) regarding the launch of a new product. The new product under consideration, a Zeidenberg’s idea, is a consumer education website that according to him would be essential to build long term customer awareness. The maintenance of the new product was estimated at $1 million per year, which signified 10 percent of annual sales and marketing combined budget. Doug Taylor and Barry Zeidenberg have worked in consumer packaged goods companies (Coca-Cola and Unilever) before their entrance to Microsoft. Both of them have had experience in both, selling and marketing departments. In reference to the introduction of the new website they have encountered opinions. The first thought of Taylor about the launch of the “Microsoft Home Magazine” is that the money would be better invested in sales channels because this would generate an increase of sales revenue. In contrast, Zeidenberg strongly believes that this investment is completely necessary in order to maintain and gain customers in the long term. Zeidenberg’s main objective is to create a need in customer’s minds that...

Swot Analysis Ms and Nokia

...Nokia + Microsoft: An Analysis of the Strategic Alliance Feb. 12, 2011 Paul Thurrott | Paul Thurrott's Supersite for Windows Advertisement I was flying home from Denver the morning that Nokia and Microsoft announced their strategic partnership to focus on Windows Phone as the smart phone platform and ecosystem for both companies. Ideally, with plane-based Wi-Fi, I could have watched the press conference en route, but that wasn't possible so I downloaded the video when I got home and watched it all the way through. Now, stepping through a second take on this announcement, I'd like to offer up some thoughts about what this means, and how I think this will impact Windows Phone going forward. To be clear, Windows Phone is the most innovative smart phone platform on the market today, and by a wide margin. The iPhone was certainly innovative when it was first announced four years ago, but today's iPhones are simply evolutions of the first, and not different at all from a user experience perspective. Android? Please. Google doesn't have an innovative bone in its corporate body, and Android is simply a cash-fueled power grab, one that is devoid of class or unique thought. But Windows Phone? Windows Phone is special. Sadly, Windows Phone has also been sitting, unchanged, since its October launch. And this is a problem because Windows Phone launched earlier than was ideal, given the unfinished and somewhat buggy state of the product. This wouldn't be a problem, I thought, because...

Strategy for Competing with Microsoft: Fight or Flight?

...with Microsoft: Fight or Flight? Question-1: Was it ethical for Microsoft to force users of its Windows operating system to use its internet browsers as well by bundling the programs together and preventing PC manufacturers from making other software available to computer buyers? Was Microsoft’s behavior toward its rivals ethical? Why or why not? Answer: By bundling its internet browser and other programs together Microsoft was forcing its buyers to use their browser Internet Explorer and other programs like Windows Media Player. It was also preventing other PC manufacturers from making similar software which the users could have used as a better alternative to the Microsoft software. As the programs were bundled together, the users were forced to pay for the software they didn’t want to use and they were not allowed to choose other software though they were better alternative than the Microsoft programs, some of these programs were open source and free of cost.As we know that consumers have four types of right and under “The Right to Choose” users should have the right to choose any program they want, not the internet browser of Windows operating system. So it was unethical for Microsoft to force users of its Windows operating system to use its internet browsers as well by bundling the programs together and preventing PC manufacturers from making other software available to computer buyers. Again, Microsoft’s behavior toward its rivals was unethical. Microsoft tried...

One of the departments could be Globalization. This department would handle all the diversity for the foreign language of Microsoft. Foreign language is not the only part of globalization though. Factors of other countries laws and regulations must be considered. There would also have to be a part of the Globalization department that handles selling and trading aspects with other countries. Microsoft, as well as any company who represents a worldly item, must consider how the product looks to the foreign customers. Will the product be appealing, needed, understood, and most of all – liked – by these customers? Entrepreneurial Leadership

...192). Entrepreneur Bill Gates, born on October 28, 1955, in Seattle, Washington, had a vision. Pursuing this vision through technical innovation and business strategy, he and his partner Paul Allen built one of the world’s largest software company, Microsoft. Two computer genius and enthusiasts met at Lakeside school and went into business together. According to Biograpy.com, in 1981, while working together with Apple to develop software for Macintosh computers, Gates recognized a threat to Microsoft’s MS-DOS operating system that primarily used text and keyboard as opposed to Apple’s system that used a mouse to drive a graphic interface, displaying text and images on the screen. Knowing and understanding where the market was going, Microsoft launched Windows systems that looked very similar to the Apple’s Macintosh system. Gates, who had advised Apple to license their software, which Apple ignored, took full advantage of the situation. Though Apple sued, Microsoft was able to prove that although there were similarities between the two, their function was different. Unlike other software companies, Microsoft understood the market and where it was heading. It made its Operating system compatible with other PC giving Microsoft an absolute advantage. Gates was genius in refusing to sell the...

Microsoft Strategy

...of passion for more than 30 years. Fiscal Year 2013 was a pivotal year for Microsoft in every sense of the word. Last year in my letter to you I declared a fundamental shift in our business to a devices and services company. This transformation impacts how we run the company, how we develop new experiences, and how we take products to market for both consumers and businesses. This past year we took the first big bold steps forward in our transformation and we did it while growing revenue to $77.8 billion (up 6 percent). In addition, we returned $12.3 billion (up 15 percent) to shareholders through dividends and stock repurchases. While we were able to grow revenue to a record level, our earnings results reflect investments as well as some of the challenges of undertaking a transformation of this magnitude. With this as backdrop, I’d like to summarize where we are now and where we’re headed, because it helps explain why I’m so enthusiastic about the opportunity ahead. Our strategy: High-value activities enabled by a family of devices and services We are still in the early days of our transformation, yet we made strong progress in the past year launching devices and services that people love and businesses need. We brought Windows 8 to the world; we brought consistent user experiences to PCs, tablets, phones and Xbox; and we made important advancements to Windows Server, Windows Azure, Microsoft Dynamics and Office 365. We are proud of what we accomplished this year and...

Efficiency and Collaboration Proposal

...business are the database systems as well as the collaboration tools. If you are using a program from Microsoft, Access is the best one to use in the business because of its ability to process information using a relational database system. However, the collaboration tool that a business uses is equally important. This tool whether it is an inter- or intra-net type system is critical when working with other team members or employees to process work efficiently and effectively for the business and its customers. While currently at Party Plates we utilize Microsoft Excel, there is good reason to incorporate Microsoft Access as well. On many occasions, you will want and possibly need to take advantage of the benefits that both programs have to offer. For example, you created a spreadsheet in Excel in which you can calculate and analyze the data, and it has become unmanageable due to size and complexity, and now that data needs to be accessed by many more users than you. One example would be to, import or link your worksheet into Access and use it as a database as an option to working with it in Excel. Whether you use excel or access first, the data is always interchangeable you can go from one to the other seamlessly. You can bring data into Access from Excel (and vice versa) by, importing copying, or exporting it. No data connection required to complete these tasks. Microsoft Access is an essential part of most businesses today. This database allows personal to access and manage...

Diagnosing Change

...Affiliation Congruence Diagnostic Model The important thing that was not initially is that Sony and Microsoft were not performing as they would have expected. It was realized that something should have been done and that certain changes needed to be implemented through the reorganization of the corporate structure. It is a question that would disturb many as why some firm would thrive on a certain corporate structure while others struggle on the same structure (Burke, 2009). It is important that we understand the forces or drivers that dictate performance and what relationship exists between the forces. This can only be done through the help of the congruence model. It determines what is happening the wrong way and then looking at means of fixing them (Burke, 2009). The model is based on the fact that in order for the organization to perform, there are four important elements which are; people, culture, work and structure. The performance of the organization will improve only the above factors are showing congruence. It is understandable that one may have the best team of people working for the organization but once the culture, the structure and the type of work is wrong, then the firm will still struggle. The companies, Sony and Microsoft had the best of technology, and the best team of experts, but they still could not perform as it had been expected due to a culture that was much bureaucratic and therefore...
