...MidSouth Chamber of Commerce Case Study #1 MidSouth Chamber of Commerce (MSCC) was created to be an advocate for the business community and, under the leadership of Jack Wallingford became one of the most powerful advocacy organizations in the area. With business membership growing and staff increasing, the computer technology that was in place was no longer able to keep up with the demands of the organization. This study outlines what MSCC went through to procure and implement a new Information Technology System and the issues MSCC encountered during the implementation process. As MSCC was growing, the realization of a more advanced computer system was in dire need. As large as MSCC was, with in the organization, technology was lacking and antiquated. There was no integration with computers and many of the job duties were done manually causing delays in information routing. All IT functions were in turn outsourced by Nolan Vassici. He provided no documentation of his work, rather only provided the basic IT needs of the organization. Later on Simon Kovecki, a Computer Science graduate student, was brought into MSCC to learn and understand the software without any direction or assistance from Vassici, who was no longer in business. This paper examines how India’s top 500 companies view, and conduct their CSR, identifies key CSR practices and maps these against Global Reporting Initiative standards. Design/methodology/approach -It is a cross sectional study which is exploratory in nature. It involved secondary data collection and use of content analysis technique to assess CSR practices of companies operating in India. Findings -The main findings of the study are that CSR is now presented as a comprehensive business strategy, arising mainly from performance considerations and stakeholder pressure. Companies consider their interaction with stakeholders and impact of its business on society as significant issues. CSR policies vary with turnover and profit. Just as the New Critics approached a work of literature through ‘close reading’, the meaning of a work of art could be deduced, it was presumed, from a close critical analysis of the autonomous object. This approach is not without appeal: in giving prominence to beauty and aesthetic experience, one assumes some degree of congruence between the aesthetic intent of the artist and the affective response of the intended viewer, both of which are vested in the work itself. In other words, situating the import of an aesthetic work within the object itself, rather than, let’s say, in its cultural context, enables one to circumvent the complex issues of production and reception, not to mention the apparent gap that separates the two. After mercury leakage from the plant had been reported in March 2001, heavy expenditure had been incurred in environmental risk assessment, waste disposal and health monitoring. The expenditure had exceeded the total profits generated by the plant since its inception. But the pressure from NGOs, led by Greenpeace[1], who had been protesting since March 2001 had not subsided. The NGOs had indulged in novel ways of keeping the issue alive. These included chaining themselves to the HLL branch office in Chennai on 15th November 2002, disrupting the Annual General Meetings (AGMs) of HLL held on 13th June 2003 and 29th June 2004, shouting slogans and brandishing placards and enlisting sympathy from ex-workers and the general public. Greenspace also maintained the pressure on HLL through its website, photoalbums, posters, persistent media briefing and seminars. The NGOs had most recently attacked HLL in April 2004 in a seminar in Chennai.
