...if these terms are used to describe an amateur athlete does it mean that they will automatically become a professional athlete and make millions? Of course it does not. I have coached basketball for ten years at a local middle school and I have heard parents and other coaches label student athletes as a sure thing to make it on the college level. It is really sad when only a couple of these kids even go to college, while most end up working entry level jobs like Price Chopper, gas stations, and fast food. Even if a student athlete is talented enough to play at the next level they still need to focus on their education. Parents, teachers, and coaches should stress the importance of education because the future is not just a game. Parents should be stressing the importance of education at home from an early age since there are no guarantees that their child will be an all-star athlete. Of course parents want the best for their children but some parents focus more on their child being an elite player than their education. There are even a few parents who drive their son or daughter to the point that schooling comes well after extra practices and workouts (Griffin). The sad part about parents like this is they probably went through the same ordeal growing up. I see this at the division four school that I work at, the star athlete being pushed by their parents who work at entry level jobs or some of them even collect unemployment because they cannot keep a job. From my experiences...

...LENG 111 – 11 Professor Patrick Doyle November 7, 2012 Commentary Growing up with Basketball Basketball, which is a kind of famous sport, is sweeping the global and attracts more and more people now. For most people, playing basketball is so easy that it does not need broad playground and long running. It just needs a one over seventeen fields of football ground and basketry. Then you can have fun with it. But I think that different people have different understanding of basketball. A few days ago in the U.S. presidential election, people know that Obama does well in basketball, and that he is a left-hander. When a journalist asked him,” what will you take action in the sport such as basketball if you won the election campaign?” He said,” I think that sport is the same as politics.” That is Obama’s attitude towards sport. But for me, basketball is not just a sport for keeping healthy, and it is also a kind of spirit. In fact, the first time I learnt about it was an accident. I was eight years old when I was in primary school. And my school started to open up many “special teams” to enrich students’ campus life. There were basketball teams, Ping-Pong teams, martial art teams, music teams, athletics teams, and so on. When I heard this news, I was very happy because I was interested in martial art very much at that time. Although I was just a little boy, I knew that martial art is a part of Chinese culture...

...of those Air Jordans. Nike swung into action even before most Chinese knew they had a new hero. The moment hurdler Lui Xiang became the country’s first Olympic medalist in a short-distance speed event – he claimed the gold with a new Olympic record in the 110 m hurdles last August. Nike launched a television advertisement in China showing Liu destroying the field and superimposed a series of questions designed to set nationalistic teeth on edge. “Asians lack muscle?’ asked one. ‘Asians lack the will to win?’ Then came the kicker, as Liu raised his arms above the trademark Nike Swoosh on his shoulder. ‘Stereotypes are made to be broken’. It was an instant success. ‘Nike understands why Chinese are proud’ says Li Yao, a weekend player at Swoosh-bedecked basketball courts near Beijings Tiananmen Square. Such clever marketing tactics have helped make Nike the icon for the new China. According to a Hill and Knowlton survey, Chinese consider the Middle Kingdom’s ‘coolest brand’. Just as a new Flying Pigeon bicycle defined success when reforms began in the 1980’s and a washing machine that could scrub potatoes became the status symbol a decade later, so the Air Jordan – or any number of Nike products turned out in factories in Asia – has become the symbol of success for China’s new middle class. Sales rose 66% in 2003, to an estimated $300 million, and Nike is opening on average 1.5 new stores a day in China – yes a day! The goal is to migrate inland from China’s...

...Love and basketball As you know, your human and so am I and we are not perfect. We all will make mistakes in our life time at some point or another. Those mistakes we make we shouldn’t knock ourselves for. Instead, we should learn from our mistakes. There is one mistake that I made that stands out the most and that I regret more than others. I stopped playing basketball after my freshman year of high school. Not a day goes by that I don’t regret setting the ball down and walking out of Case Arena, my high school gym. Basketball has always been a ritual so to speak, in my family. When I learned how to walk as a baby, the first toy that was given to me was a basketball. Then before you knew it, I was learning the beginning fundamentals of the game. At the age of five was when the game of basketball was really being stressed to me. My mother made sure that I had one of those stand up basketball goals in my toy room. In addition, for the most part I would be in the toy room shooting the basketball for hours on in. Since I was young, the ball wouldn’t go in the basket most of the time of course, but it was the whole concept of bettering my skills and abilities. The years went by and I got older, and my skills began to better and better. Then one day I was in the fifth grade, on the team, and ready as ever to begin playing competitive basketball. My mom knew that when the season started up that she wouldn’t be seeing me as much anymore. The reason being was because I was outside...

...to write tough stories about kids who don't appear in most storybooks," asserted Sue Corbett in a Knight Ridder/Tribune News Service report. "Children whose fathers are absent or jailed. About children who share playgrounds with drug dealers and gangs. About teens struggling to maintain their dignity and living with poverty, violence, and fear." Walter Milton Myers was born August 12, 1937 in Martinsburg, West Virginia, Myers lost his mother, Mary Green Myers, at age two, during the birth of his younger sister Imogene. Since his father, George Ambrose, was struggling economically, Walter and two of his sisters were informally adopted by family friends Florence and Herbert Dean. The Dean family moved him to Harlem. His foster mother, a half-Indian and half-German woman, taught Walter to read at the age of four, even though she was barely literate. She read to him every day from True Romance Magazine. He had a speech impediment when he was little, which made it hard for him to communicate with others, but he overcame it by expressing himself through writing short stories and poems. At the age of ten he began to write fiction. His favorite places in his childhood were the basketball courts and the library. The library was a favorite place because he couldn't believe that one of the things he enjoyed most, reading, was free. The years Walter attended high school were hard for him, because of his speech impediment. But that didn't stop him from writing. In high school he was a good...

...who do not learn to read at or close to grade level by the end of elementary school enter the secondary grades unable to meet the demands of their content area classes. The students within these walls came to me with their own uniqueness and various degrees of capabilities. Students were selected based upon their need for improved reading comprehension. After interviewing the classroom teachers (there were 4 different ones) and observing students in their classroom setting the research students were selected. I met with each student individually to get an estimate of what their reading levels might be. The four components of CSR (preview, click and clunk, get the gist, and wrap-up) can be used to stimulate student’s motivation to read, help with decoding print, and comprehend and respond to text. Researchers believe it has improved their students’ reading comprehension, increased their vocabularies, and enhanced cooperative skills, Student’s process over the long term will be evaluated based upon their ability to begin to show automaticity in utilizing the strategies learned as part of CSR. The acquisition of content comprehension can be evaluated by observing students as they interact and use dialog in their cooperative groups. Educating Exceptional Children: Using Collaborative Strategic Reading Statement of the Problem Research states that there is approximately 20% of elementary school students are at risk for reading failure. 5-10% of those students have difficulty...

These demographics show how middle aged suburban families buy different products than a town full of college students and recent graduates. (358-59) Brooks next point is that people tend to work with other employees of similar backgrounds. He gives a deep detailed analysis of professors at universities having similar political views, and then he said “People want to be around others who are roughly like themselves. That's called community” (360). He concludes his essay by asking the reader if we truly care about true diversity. (361) Believe it or not, the neighborhood that feeds into David Douglas High School goes against Brooks theory. This outer east Portland neighborhood contained within the approximate boundaries of NE Halsey, SE Clatsop, I-205 and 146th is a diverse community in both race and economic standing proven by my own experience, interviews of others in the community, and research from articles. David Douglas High School is the nucleus for diversity through the community that surround it and the individuals...

...picture. The overall message of the documentary will be to show how three people, the same age, growing up in the same environment, can turn out to be very different. I think that the best way to accomplish this would be to shoot interviews, ask questions, and show our different hobbies/personalities. I want to begin the documentary will a montage of old home videos/pictures and conclude the montage with short clips of us today. Then, I want to go straight into the interviews. I am going to start off with the most commonly asked questions like, “What’s it like to be a triple?”, “Can you read each other’s minds?”, and “Are you identical.” These questions would help to start the documentary by debunking some misconceptions about triplets in a lighthearted, fun way. After these questions, I’ll add interviews with my parents and my older sister. For my parents, I want to ask questions like: “What was your immediate reaction when you found out you were going to have triplet.” I know they...

...American Literature Journal Writing Tabish Jaleel Shaikh March 10(Saul Bellow- Seize the Day) Seize the Day was a comparatively easy read, and seemed like a very real life depiction of American life, from the eyes of the two generations, Tommy Wilhelm and his father, Dr. Adler. Comparing it to one of the first novels I read in this course, Death of a Salesman, I realize that Seize the Day also has the theme of the broken myth of the American dream embedded in the story. Also the title of the novel struck me at first, but I could not remember where I had read or come across this phrase before. Upon searching online, I remembered that it has its origin in one of the poems of a Latin Poet Horace, the word being “Carpe diem” in Latin. I remembered that I had read this back in high school, the stanza of the poem was: While we speak, envious time will have {already} fled Seize the day, trusting as little as possible in the future. It’s interesting how just a small phrase can carry so much meaning. Saul Bellow has very effectively depicted the philosophy of carpe diem by narrating a real life scenario of war stricken America where maximizing the utility of time is the very important. Although the theme of alienation and isolation is prevalent throughout the book through Tommy’s life events, Saul could not make me feel sympathetic towards Tommy. Tommy’s inability to judge himself, and be self-aware of his strengths and weaknesses causes his downfall. He is always...

...my one of my top two all-time events that I personally participated in that changed my life. When I was in high school, I played football at Florence High school and I was the starting quarterback my junior and senior year. My senior year we had clinched second place in our region and we were going to host the first ever home playoff game at Florence High School, but before we could do that, we had our last regular season game against the undefeated and number one ranked in team 5A Russellville Golden Tigers. They also had the number two ranked fullback in the nation on their team. Now, we were 5-4 at the time and were looking to also be the first football team at Florence High School to have a winning record. I can remember that whole week of school hearing from students, teachers and even my own parents how we were more than likely going to get blasted out of our own stadium. It really pissed me off especially coming from the people that I thought would back us up and be on our side. When Friday finally came I read the newspaper and seen that we were picked to lose and, I can’t remember the score they predicted but I know it was at least by three touchdowns. I found it quite funny but I didn’t let it bother me. When it was game time I couldn’t think about anything but they negativity I had heard all week and how I wanted us to shut them up. To make a long story short, we came out pumped up and ready in all three phases of the game. It ended up coming down to a blocked PAT by Arsenial...

...TEACHER HISTORICAL INFORMATION I’ve had 3 years teaching experience in the public school setting all of which have taken place at the middle school level, more specifically grades sixth and seventh. I began my teaching career as a physical education and health teacher, but I took and passed the Praxis II for Middle School Level Core Content Knowledge; this along with passing an Arkansas History collegiate course allowed me to add fourth through eighth grade mathematics, science, literature, and social studies to my teaching license. About three weeks into my first year teaching I was asked if I would be willing to teach science in addition to physical education to which I agreed. Since then I’ve either taught exclusively seventh and eighth grade science or a combination of physical education and science classes at said level. I also was the head coach for eighth grade girls sports and assistant for seventh grade girls sports which include: volleyball, basketball, and track and field. For this project I chose to concentrate on the interactions taking place in the science classroom setting as I feel it provides a more appropriate backdrop for this project. I feel like one of the more important qualities in both my personal and professional life is my ability to easily learn and process new information. This quality helped me immensely when I began teaching science because I had very little experience teaching in the classroom setting (just a semester of student teaching health)...

...It was about 10 o’ clock at night, and we had decided to explore our rebellious sides. 4 friends and I filled the Jeep, and made the short voyage—consisting of exactly one Red Hot Chili Peppers song—to the epitomized Westchester neighborhood: systematic rows of two-story houses, each complete with one pool, a driveway with at least one well-groomed car costing no less than $30,000, and an extensive back porch to overlook the freshly mowed ½ acre backyard. Jason, Walker, Ben, Danny and I had set out to perform the ancient American art of Ding-Dong-Ditch. The process was simple: ring the doorbell and run away. I went first, and produced a minimal response from the victim, as a woman merely opened her front door, ostensibly recognized the harmless attack, and then returned to her television. Walker’s next attempt left the 5 of us unsatisfied. We felt too old for this, and the financially comfortable families of Yorktown grew a resistance to the unthreatening disturbance of teenagers. We returned to the Jeep, and between the 5 of us existed a noticeable combination of disappointment and relief. Disappointment among those who unapologetically enjoy inconsequential crime, and relief among those who receive only discomfort from contributing to monkey business. Jason’s impulsive proposal to get fast food was granted, and by 10:30 we were on our way to town. Ben, included in those who felt relief from abandoning the ding-dong-ditching, remained quiet in backseat. He had a recognizable...

...making business in the human culture. In the United States, Every day millions of office and break time conversations center on the local team’s most recent performance, an upcoming game, the impending draft, the current coach, the future coach, and so on. according to the existing records, in United States of America, there are less than 110 Teams of the 4 main organized professional sports, basketball, baseball, hockey, and, football participating in the main League level fixtures annually. There are less than 90 Stadiums spread over 25 States. Today, sports has become a money making alternative for not only players but also the coaches or managers, the media, and schools participating in sports. Salaries for professional athletes continue to escalate each year. From Alex Rodriguez’s record, $252 million contract to David Beckham’s $50 million per year enticement to join the LA Galaxy soccer team, most sports fans believe that professional athletes, in general, are overpaid and not worth their salaries. Yet for the professional athlete, maximizing compensation is critical, given the short careers and health risks associated with the sports profession. Thus, athletes and their agents often look to see what others within their sport are paid in an effort to negotiate for more money. Few, if any, have compared athlete compensation across sports (Rod Hilpirt, Scott Wysong, Sheila Hartley, Mike Latino & Andrea Zabkar). In major team sports, star players command millions of dollars...

...Kelly will turn 5 this summer and will be a bit on the young side in the fall when he starts kindergarten. The school where Kelly will attend kindergarten has started a kindergarten prep session over the summer that lasts for a couple of weeks and involves group as well as individual work on letters, numbers, etc. You enroll Kelly at the age of 4 years, 10 months. He is assessed by one of the kindergarten teachers, who observes him during free play and tests Kelly one-on-one. Then the teacher sits down with you and your partner and gives the following report: The teacher thought Kelly was doing well with the peer group. He made several little friends in the kindergarten prep session. He could read a few short words and write his name and could name most of the letters on sight at the time of testing. He also showed an age-appropriate understanding of phonological awareness (e.g., deciding whether two words started with the same sound, picking out the two words that rhymed from a list of three words). The teacher recommended continuing to enjoy reading and writing activities - Kelly was well-prepared for literacy activities in kindergarten. The teacher noted that Kelly had no difficulty adapting to the "practice" kindergarten activities the children were asked to do. Kelly was generally cooperative, avoided getting distracted, and stayed on task. Kelly did not get upset when mild stress occurred (such as an instruction to hurry up). The teacher recommended that Kelly be given...
