...Article: Comfort DelGro revises taxi fares in Singapore From: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1169537/1/.html Summary Taxis are an important form of public transport as well as public service in Singapore and have a total strength of approximately 25,176 in this country. Most people in the country would opt to take public transport as compared to having a personal vehicle for transportation as the cost for maintenance for a personal vehicle is higher as compared to taking public transport. Recently, Comfort DelGro, the most dominant taxi company (with a total of 15439 taxis) in Singapore has opted to revise their taxi fares to meet the increased demand of taxis in Singapore without the consultation of consumers or taxi drivers. Taxi models by Comfort DelGro include Toyota Crown, Hyundai Sonata, Toyota Camry and a Limousine model. Before 12 December 2011, the flag down price was SGD $2.80, SGD $3.00, SGD $3.20 and SGD $3.20 for the different models of taxis respectively. The meter fare was SGD $0.20 for every 395 meters (m) from the first 10 kilometers (km), SGD $0.20 for every 330m after 10km and SGD $0.20 for every 45 seconds of waiting time. Currently, the flag down price for the different taxi models are SGD $3.00, SGD $3.20, SGD $3.40 and SGD $3.40 for the respective models of taxis. The meter fare currently is SGD $0.22 for every 400 m for the first 10 km, SGD $0.22 for every 300 m after the first 10 km, and SGD $0.22 for every 45 seconds...

...Chicago Street Gangs The City of Chicago is home to many iconic sites and famous things including Wrigley Field, Giordano’s deep dish pizza, Navy Pier, Portillos, and Willis Tower. Chicago residents live and work in some of the most affluent, wealthy, and glamorous neighborhoods like The Gold Coast and River North. Over the last couple of years though, the spotlight has been shifted from all of Chicago’s wonderful things to its poverty stricken neighborhoods, rising crime rate, murders, and drug problems. All of these things can be linked to what many consider Chicago’s biggest problem, street gangs. But today the city seems to be far more segregated and full of poverty in neighborhoods that are home to minorities. Many adults turn to the streets to make a living and children see their elders and in return do the same. These same poor neighborhoods have a failing public education system for the youth along with a bad relationship with police. According to the Chicago Crime Commission, “a 2012 Chicago Police Department gang audit found there are more than 600 gang factions in the city, with a minimum combined membership of 70,000” (cbsnews.com). With the large number of gang members in the city there is a lot of fighting going on over turf for control of drug distribution. This is mainly a problem occurring in minority communities all throughout Chicago. “201 of the 259 homicide victims were African-American” (chicagotribune.com). While blacks make up about 33 percent of the...

...CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND The goal of the students in the graduate studies is to acquire a unique experience, to develop more professionally, to sharpen a variety of skills, and to learn some new ones. Graduate education represents mastery of an academic discipline. As distinct from undergraduate education, graduate education provides advance knowledge in the field of study that is characterized by specialized training in the discipline’s theory, research, methodology, and critical analysis. Since graduate education is concentrated, learning is more self-directed and involves more individualized instruction and mentoring than does learning for baccalaureate degree. A master’s degree provides student with the skills necessary to generate new knowledge and to apply existing new knowledge. It also provides student with the professional ethics and values of the discipline. Graduate school is training in research. It is for people who love research, scholarship and teaching for their own sake and for the difference they can sometimes make in the world. (Phil. Agre. 1996). Graduate school generally takes five to eight years. The first year is often the worst. It usually consists of an overwhelming amount of structured reading designed to give general background in the basic text of the particular field. Graduate education requires significant investment of financial and personal resources and...
