They are mutants, no not like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. They were born with some unusual talents, Mika has webbed feet and Ellie has webbed fingers. When they are close together they can feel each other's presence. An example is at the beginning of the book, Ellie escaped Mal Gorman and she was rushing to see Mika and her family. Mal Gorman found out and told his men to find her and bring her back. She was so close to them, then she got shot down by one of his men. When she crashed Mika had woken up and from his bed because he felt a slight pain. When Mika and Ellie can sense or feel there pain it is a big deal.
