Mildred is one of the most obvious and prime examples of ignorance. She shows it by plugging into the Seashells, taking an overdose of pills and not knowing it, not caring about Clarisse’s death, and watching wall-sized TVs. All the while talking with her scripted “uncles” and “aunts”. Addicted to the labor-saving machines and crude entertainment, she recedes into brief and grunt communication. She is the height of the status quo, the definition of shallowness and mediocrity. She is bland, vacant, and oblivious to the world around her. In a word, Mildred Montag is dumb.
