When one thinks of a role model the first thing that comes to one's mind is a dependable hero who will give a person an example of ways to better live their own life. A role model is someone to give one hope and inspiration. Superman, Michael Jordan, and even family members are many examples of what one would consider to be a role model, but a role model can also be a figure who negatively influences the daily life of a person.

When people think of a role model they immediately think positive thoughts. Role models in most cases are a positive influence.

Along with positive role models, a role model can negatively influence one's life in many ways. An example of a bad role model is Miley Cyrus. For years Miley Cyrus had been a person

Miley Cyrus Rhetorical Analysis

...seminar, we will be investigating into the life of a singer and actress, who has recently been engaged to Liam Hemsworth and has made her comeback with a positive image, Miley Cyrus. Does “Hannah Montana” ring a bell to you? It sure does to any teenage girl as Miley Cyrus once used to be American sweetheart playing Hannah Montana in the eponymous Disney series with her squeaky-clean image in the media. After leaving her Disney cocoon for a while, she still makes her appearance in the public as a singer, however, whatever the identities that the media have constructed her as, Miley Cyrus is nowhere near the same squeaky-clean girl she used to be. The 23-year-old pop...

Celebrity Role Models

...Mrs. Hua English 801 B “Celebrity role models” Miley Cyrus, Amanda Bynes, and Britney Spears what do all these celebrities have in common? They all rose to stardom as childhood stars and have become a tremendous part of children’s lives. They have transformed from talented singing to talented acting. As these stars tend to grow older they become exposed to an amount of certain things. These things include body image issues, alcohol, drugs, and sexuality. Many of these things start affecting their image in the media. Celebrity’s actions affect children who look up to them. Its like the saying “monkey see monkey do” they want to be exactly like them. Young girls begin to starve themselves because of body image insecurities, casual teenage sex is immensely increasing, and clothing is beginning to get smaller and smaller. The worse case scenario is they typically blame their unacceptable behavior on television. All these bad habits are being adopted from children, which we must shut down. Increasingly Celebrity images are being publicized immensely across television, movies, magazines, and Internet in our generation of technology. I strongly believe this is largely a negative development. Miley Cyrus for instance, was known as “Hanna Montana” on the Disney Channel. The Hanna Montana franchise made Disney close to a $1 billion dollar. (DailyPix). That’s all thanks to her inspiring fans that look up to Miley Cyrus as a role model. Also her Hanna Montana Movie raised the revenue...

Miley Cyrus Analysis

...THURSDAY, JANUARY 9, 2014 Beautifully Bad : Miley Cyrus Who is not talking about Miley Cyrus? At the time I’m writing this, her Wrecking Ball video has 473 271 879 views on YouTube. Everyone has something to say and most of the time, their opinions are the same. And this makes me think that we can’t all argue on a subject without hearing a different point of view. That’s why I’m here to show you how the singer is clearly beautifully bad but still have something great to share that will let you see her from a different point of view. Little Miley wrote in her biography: “The greatest opportunities in life come with fear and risk” and that’s totally what she did. First, no one can say she didn’t get his attention. Whatever Miley does: she twerks, she pretends to have sex with a wrecking ball, she does something normal or a new video is coming out, this singer is the thing...

Footloose Comparison

...so many differences in the characters and events. Christ Lemire describes the old Footloose as a “flood of fond memories” for anyone who grew up in the 1980s. This movie was a true symbol of the growth of pop culture during this time. The main character, played by Kevin Bacon, was a bad boy from big city Chicago. He was forced to move to a small town called Bomont, Utah with his mother into his aunt’s house. All he wanted to do was dance, but it was banned. This had a lot to do with the church and their moral beliefs. The boy meets a rebellious girl and it almost halfway becomes a love story also. His goal in this movie was for the town to put on a prom for the teens in school. He even goes before the town council in order to change the law against dancing. Although he portrays a very good argument and quotes from the bible about how they danced and rejoiced, the council voted against it. The young boy is determined and does not give up. In the end they hold the prom at a grain mill outside of town and everyone has the time of their lives. Now, back in the 1980s this was a bigger deal than we see it today. This could have been a real life epidemic in some places. This movie was like a role model for young people. Kevin Bacon was the crush for young girls, while the soundtrack of the movie played on all of the radio stations over and over again. People looked at this movie as an inspiration to their lives. It was huge....

Is Childhood Disappearing?

...Is Childhood Disappearing? 2012 Brendan Dolman Sociology, Unit 3 5/1/2012 Abstract This is a report to look at the social construct of Childhood and whether it is disappearing. This report explores the history of childhood and current socio cultural influences on modern day childhood. Is Childhood disappearing? Introduction I am interested in this subject area because childhood is a social construct which seems to be diminishing from society. This is of particular interest to me because childhood as we know it has only been about for the last century but now it seems that it is once again diminishing from society. I say this because when looking at childhood from 50 years ago and comparing it to childhood today there is a huge difference. Today toys seem to be targeted at children of ages 1-10 years old but not for children above that age (Manhattan Institute for Policy Research). Children seem to be pushed into the spotlight of adult activities such as the fashion and glamour world in the case of beauty pageants (Daily Mail Online 2011). There also seems to be more of a focus on older children playing on computer consoles with violent games which depict realistic and gruesome actions. These computer games also depict real life situations such as the war in Afghanistan and give these older children the opportunity to play as a soldier in this scenario. Content What is childhood? Childhood is not to be confused with being a child, it is a completely different...

...Thomas Pugh Week 9 Final Part One You are the chief editor of a large metropolitan daily newspaper. One of the reporters is caught fabricating sources and making up facts. How do you handle the situation, from the disciplining the reporter to explaining it to your readers? The Editors Corner – A Formal Apology, an Explanation and a Promise to those We Serve The role of the media in delivering the news to the public is a large responsibility. One that should not be taken lightly given today’s circumstances and challenges. Going back to the days when a little girl (Virginia O’Hanlon of the Yes Virginia there is a Santa Claus Letter Editorial) wrote in to the New York Sun, and her reasoning when writing in to the editor was simple, her papa said.”If you see it in the Sun it’s so”. As then, like now, people believe what they read in the newspaper because they want to believe that we have their best interest at heart. Because of the significance of that kind of immediate news delivery in print to our readers, we have a social responsibility to our public to be honest, forthright and above reproach as they made us what we are today. So, today it is with a heavy heart that we inform you that one of our reporters was caught this week fabricating sources and making up facts to generate support for one of the political candidate whom he was covering. We will be printing a retraction and correction if any is needed on the story or stories that appeared...

Values Portrayed in Popular Media

...Values Portrayed in Popular Media Stacey Gilley ENG.122 Professor Bernadette Anayah September 3, 2012 Values Portrayed in Popular Media In today’s society popular media plays a big role and affects how some people conduct themselves. Dictionary.com describes popular media as, “the means of communication, as radio and television, newspapers, and magazines that reach or influence people widely.” The majority of households spend the majority of their time watching television shows. Our young children look up to the young actors or individuals that they watch on television through TV shows or music videos or even ones they read about in magazines. And there are a lot of women that look up to the women that play some of the parts on screen. The popular media plays a significant part of the problems that a lot of regular households go through. Everyone wants to be like who they watch on television. Is it wrong to allow our children to watch these shows? Body Image Effect

...We all have a routine that we follow to get ready in the morning. This can include eating breakfast, taking a shower, putting makeup on, getting dressed, and many other things. Even though our routines are most definitely not all the same, I am comfortable in making the assumption that almost all of us take a moment to look in the mirror at some point or another. We stand there staring as our eyes and brains try to interpret what they are seeing, and for many people, it is not a pretty picture. We are not always able to see ourselves in the way that others can. Many times, we focus on the bad in ourselves. Rather than seeing an amazing smile or bright eyes, our eyes dart to a zit that has just appeared or a little bit of fat that just...

Women in Society

...Melissa Kuhns Jacob Craig ENC 1145 26 September 2013 Women and their Portrayal in Society The portrayal of women in society is an issue that has started to create problems among people in our society. We have given women so many stereotypes to live up to it making it almost impossible to be truly accepted by society. With ads starting to target younger generations through social sites and television, much of what you see now targets certain demographics. These demographics are women of all ages. They are using sex, the historical ideas of women, and Wall Street to abuse the images of women. Companies use the looks of women to sell their products and it is harming the lives of everyone in today’s society. We are so influenced today by the thought of what people think that we will listen to anyone and anything telling us what to do and how to look, no matter what the cost is. The media uses women in order to sell objects because they can attract both men and women by portraying a woman a certain way. They use women as sex objects in more than one way because “sex sells”. The way they attract men is by making a woman look sexually appealing. Ad companies throughout all of the media do this because they believe that all men will be drawn to an ad with a sexual woman on it. The way they pose her and the clothes she wears are all strategic moves for the companies; it helps them sell. However, this method is creating a negative view of all women in society. They draw in women...

Makeup Annotated Bibliography

...makeup isn’t a bad thing and people shouldn’t be shaming others for the amount of makeup they wear. Makeup is a way for girls to express themselves it gives an individual confidence. It’s one of the things that most girls feel that they need because it lets them feel confident about themselves. Confidence is a key factor that plays a huge role in today’s society, as well as being able to feel good and empowering about oneself. Every girl should be able to feel empowered in their skin and should not be ashamed of how they look with or without makeup. It’s able to let girls feel comfortable, instead of feeling vulnerable about themselves. A women wearing makeup can be “like a man donning armor to prepare himself for battle” (Branes). Feeling vulnerable brings down the confidence level of a girl and let the “trolls” of social media take over the way an individual is supposed to feel. Bernier, Kate. “Makeup and hairstyle are essential- but only if you’ve also got the confidence they inspire.” Ebscohost. 15 May 2008, http://eds.b.ebscohost.com.proxy.lib.csus.edu/. ehost/detail/detail. Access 30 march 2016. Bernier writes about the perceptions of makeup professional and several actors in the U.S. concerning hairstyling and makeup. As well as the significance of confidence in self-image and how actors in particular try to achieve this, through their communication. It is heavily rooted in social media – supporters share experiences by Tweeting the #withoutshoes hashtag. AOL, a Simply Measured customer, partnered with TOMS to build online momentum leading up to 4/10. For us data geeks, AOL’s use of social media analytics was particularly interesting – both as a rally call for consumers and a as way to message results internally and externally. Looking at the data from these efforts serves as great case study for measuring and communicating social media analytics. Using Social Media Metrics as a Rally Call AOL created excitement around a social media metric – reach – asking consumers to help distribute the #withoutshoes messages to over 1,000,000 people before April 10th. By reporting reach each day of the campaign, AOL set a collective goal and communicated the impact to participants. At Simply Measured, we tend to think about social media programs like a megaphone. You put content in and when things work well, your messages get amplified. In this instance, AOL aligned their campaign goals around this amplification in a way that compelled consumers...

Technology

...oday's technology is already producing a marked shift in the way we think and behave, particularly among the young. I mustn't, however, be too censorious, because what I'm talking about is pleasure. For some, pleasure means wine, women and song; for others, more recently, sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll; and for millions today, endless hours at the computer console. But whatever your particular variety of pleasure (and energetic sport needs to be added to the list), it's long been accepted that 'pure' pleasure - that is to say, activity during which you truly "let yourself go" - was part of the diverse portfolio of normal human life. Until now, that is. Now, coinciding with the moment when technology and pharmaceutical companies are finding ever more ways to have a direct influence on the human brain, pleasure is becoming the sole be-all and end-all of many lives, especially among the young. We could be raising a hedonistic generation who live only in the thrill of the computer-generated moment, and are in distinct danger of detaching themselves from what the rest of us would consider the real world. This is a trend that worries me profoundly. For as any alcoholic or drug addict will tell you, nobody can be trapped in the moment of pleasure forever. Sooner or later, you have to come down. I'm certainly not saying all video games are addictive (as yet, there is not enough research to back that up), and I genuinely welcome the new generation of "brain-training" computer...
