...Elyse Carbajal ENGL 102 Professor Falwell 11/02/2015 Research Paper Othello Othello is a famous tragedy written by William Shakespeare as a Tragic Hero. The Moor is arguably one of the finest, if not the finest, tragedies in the literary history of the Western Civilization. In this paper I will discuss Othello as a tragic hero and compare his to Aristotle’s concept of what a tragic hero is actually is. The characteristic of a tragic hero is defined by the Greek critic, is determined by three characteristics. According to Aristotle a tragic hero must be 1) Be a nobleman, prince, or person of high estate; 2) Have a tragic flaw, and a weakness of in judgment; and 3) Fall from high to low estate Using the criteria’s above which was established by Aristotle, we can effortlessly classify Othello, the Moor, as a tragic hero. At the time, it was common for the practice for the Italian city-sates that have a foreigner, with proven military capabilities, serving as the head of their army. Othello, an African Moor of noble birth, is just such a character and held the highest-ranking position in the military as a Governor –General of Cyprus. The city of Cyprus was a city-state in the Venice. Othello’s title alone, Governor-General, emanates an air of nobility, confidence, and strength. It defines someone who is held in remarkably high esteem by the people of Venice. During Act 1, Scene 3, the Duke and a few Senators are discussing issues around a table when Othello enters...

...Sexual Harassment in the Military Anonymous SOC 402 CONTEMPORARY SOCIAL PROBLEMS & THE WORKPLACE Professor Douglas Nelson October 21, 2013 Sexual Harassment in the Military The topic of discussion is sexual harassment in the United States military. My paper will identify the scope and nature of this problem while specifying how it has affected the military as a whole. Additionally, I will identify how this problem can be either mitigated or solved utilizing a variety of social controls. Throughout this paper, I will support the fact that sexual harassment is an ongoing problem in the military and recommend changes that could provide potential social or economical benefits if implemented. The scope and nature of sexual harassment in the United States military is one of great magnitude because of the profound effect it has on the individual service member and the organization as a whole. “In a 1995 U.S. Department of Defense survey of active-duty men and women in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard, 70.9 percent of female personnel and 35.8 percent of male personnel said that they had experienced sexually harassing behaviors in the previous 12 months” (Antecol & Cobb-Clark, 2001). While these statistics are almost 20 years old there is still relevance. A survey in today’s military might show results that reflect a decline in the percentages or occurrences;...

...1951-55), his fame, something many view as a crucial aspect of his life he thrived off of and live for, spanned well beyond the years he held various positions in political office. Churchill was born and raised in the Victorian Era, a time in which the British Empire was at its peak as the world’s strongest power. When studying almost any aspect of Churchill’s life, his romantic vision of Britain as a thriving empire and world power holds a strong precedence. Many historians study Churchill through his political career, aiming to validate claims both for and against Churchill as hero of his time. There is expansive research and volumes of evaluations on Churchill’s decision making and the associated success and failures that ensued. While the never ending debate on the quality of his leadership goes on, Churchill’s career as a writer and his extensive published works are commonly overlooked. This paper analyzes Churchill the writer and how his works not only paint a vivid picture of his life and times, but are also a self-reflection of the man he was and the man he wanted to be. Churchill once stated, “Writing a book is an adventure. To begin with it is a toy then an amusement. Then it becomes a mistress, and then it becomes a master, and then it becomes a tyrant and, in the last stage, just as you are about to be reconciled to your servitude, you kill the monster and fling him to the public”. Churchill’s life can be very closely compared to his explanation of writing a book....

His list of achievement goes on until his banishment for professional racing and the stripping of his titles. He admitted to using banned substances including steroids and blood doping in an interview with Oprah Winfrey on January 17, 2013. The three topics that rise in answering why Lance Armstrong blood doped is explaining what blood doping is, the advantage and disadvantages of it and drug use in profession sports. To describe what blood doping is one must first understand some key terms. Hemoglobin is a red protein responsible for carrying oxygen in your blood. Another key term is the cardiovascular system and this is an organ system that distributes the blood throughout the body to deliver nutrients and remove waste. And the respiratory system is the organ system that carries out gas exchange in your body. These three things all work together hand in hand like a smooth operating clock. The respiratory system gets the oxygen from the air and transports it to the blood carried in the hemoglobin. The oxygen enriched hemoglobin...

...The immensely colossal, official medal on a ribbon around the neck of the Pit Bull in the photo is just one of many awards granted to Stubby, most adorned canine war hero in United States history. Stubby’s contribution to the welfare of American soldiers was in many ways unique. Stubby was a stray who turned up one day in the summer of 1917 at the Yale Bowl in Connecticut as soldiers trained. Corporal J. Robert Conroy patted the amicable canine and asked, “How are you today?” Stubby was very astute, so Conroy edified him to shake hands, an artifice that was in great favor with the troops. Then he realized he could edify him to raise his paw up just a little farther towards his brow when he was given the order to, “Salute!” The night afore they sailed for France, Conroy went down to the ship, the S.S. Minnesota, and introduced Stubby to the military police officer who was sentineling it. According to Conroy, the officer was delectated by Stubby’s military salute, enough to let Conroy sneak him onboard the next day, under his overcoat....

They were all raised in Mississippi, and he was sent to various boarding schools. It was understood that he was not the best student and was often in trouble for one reason or another. In 1821, he attended Transylvania University in Kentucky where he did very well. One of his peers recalled that he was the best looking, the most intelligent, and loved by many. After that, he served in the US Army in remote garrison posts in Illinois and Wisconsin under the command of Zachary Taylor. In 1832, he fought in the Black Hawk War. Shortly after the war, Davis fell in love with his commander's daughter in 1833. Her name was Sarah Knox Taylor. Mr. Taylor did not approve of Davis. Sarah went to live with her aunt and Davis resigned his military post in order to join Sarah. Once they were reunited, they soon were married despite her father's wishes. Davis bought a small plantation called Brierfield, in Mississippi. Though this was the beginning of their lives together, their marriage did not last long. They both contracted malaria and Sarah died three months after their wedding. Davis continued to run his plantation for the next ten, lonely years in misery. Ronald Reagan - The Cold War and U.S. Diplomacy In this assignment, I will discuss President Ronald Reagan’s position on The Cold War and U.S. Diplomacy during his presidency. First, let me define the terms “The Cold War”, and “U.S. Diplomacy”. The Cold War was a period of military and political tension between the United States and the Soviet Union after World War II. It was called the Cold War, because there was no direct fighting between the two powers. The term “U.S. Diplomacy” refers to a country’s ability or skill to negotiate on the international level between nations or groups of nations, or simply, it is political contact between national governments. Diplomacy is extremely important. It is the feedback...

...JOAN OF ARC | Joan of Arc has been a Roman Catholic figure analysed and studied for hundreds of years. Her short life is discussed in numerous religious and political texts not only because of her involvement and guidance of the French troops in the Hundred Years’ War but because of the spiritual guidance to lead the troops that she claimed to receive in her visions. Whether Joan is considered a hero, a saint or a visionary woman, her life continues to be of controversy among scholars who still immortalize her with their studies. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the various perceptions that attempt to portray Joan of Arc as a venerated and outstanding figure. Part of the analysis will focus on her role as an inspirational woman, the iconography and symbols and the role within religion and political involvement that Joan of Arc continues to influence. Her life and death According to Kevin J. Harty’s article “Joan of Arc’s life may well be the most-documented of anyone who lived before the twentieth-century but as Professor Heimann’s ground-breaking and fascinating study suggests there is still much to be learned about the Maid of Orléans” (Harty 104). Her very short life (1412-31) had a series of events that would be remembered for hundreds of years to follow. At the age of 12, she started seeing visions of saints who would guide her way leading the French troops to end the siege of Orléans. Her visions can be contrasted with the annunciation experienced by the...
