Have you ever wonder what it is like to be in the boots of a US Service Member during their deployment phase? Also have you ever wonder what it was like to fight in a combat zone and the trials and tribulation they face when the deployment goes on? Well I’m going to tell you the three phases of a deployment. First you start with the ceremony, the lonely flight and finally the trials and tribulations of the combat zone. As you well know I’m no longer in the military but I going to tell you these phases through my eyes when I was in the army during my combat tour in Afghanistan from June 2010 to June 2011.
It all started when I first sergeant told us what time to be at the company so we can have our early formation before we head to the Green Ramp. If you don’t know what Green Ramp is, it’s the final holding area that separates the soldiers and the plane. The reason why they call it that because it’s a small ramp that leads to the plane and it has green lands on the sides of the ramp. The formation time was 0500 and the weather was so nice that I could hear all the early birds chirping away. The formation time came and the first sergeant held accountability for all the fellow enlisted and officers that were going with us to Afghanistan. When we all found out what time we were heading to Green Ramp, we all decided that this was going to be a very long day. One of my soldiers came up to me and asks will this be a steadfast deployment and I told him I sure hope so. When it was finally time for us to get on the bus and head towards Green Ramp, I knew this was it and I can’t wait to see my family before I had out to Afghanistan. When we arrive there, you can see all the families waiting on us to get there so we can say our good byes as well as the hugs and kisses. I immediately went to my mom and gave her a big hug and told her I love her and I will see her soon. Then I shook my stepfathers hand as he knew what to except because he was a veteran of the army as well. The final formation came and we all had to get in line so we can stand at parade rest and wait for the battalion commander to come give his speech about where we are going and the mission we will part take. As I gaze into the crowd I can see my sister-in law with my twin nephews approaching my mom. After I observe all the families I could the tears and camera flashing as our company commander called us to attention. He told us to make a right face and a right turn as this was it. It’s time to head down Green Ramp. As we walk towards Green Ramp we wave our final good byes and head towards the plane.
As we boarded World Airlines, we all started to pick out seats to sit in and find the most comfortable spot so we can fall asleep as we knew that this will be a very long flight. When I started to place my rifle under the seat, one of my soldiers asked me to use my phone so he can call his with and tell her his final good bye. When I look out the window, I saw all the families waving at us to give us our final salute off into the wind. When the plane started to pick up speed, I felt a little heaviness in my stomach as I knew it was no turning back now. I dug through my assault pack which is nothing but a book bag. I started to search for my iPod and head phone as I knew that we have a 9 ½ hour flight to Germany. The stewardess but on a movie that I didn’t want to watch so I feel asleep and hope that I will wake up in Germany. Even though that didn’t happen because I kept waking up from time to time to eat and use the bathroom. When we finally landed in Germany, I thought the weather will be nice but I was wrong because for some strange reason it was cold. Someone told me that Germany is like this and that’s why he never wanted to get station there because it’s too cold. When we went inside the waiting area, just about everybody took their phones and cameras so we could all take pictures and cherish the moments. They told us we will be there for about an hour and a half because the plane was refueling. We knew we had one more stop and that was Kuwait. We all just sat around before it was time for us to the final 8 hour flight to Kuwait. When we boarded the plane again the switch stewardess and they told us what movies they are going to play. Again I didn’t want to see any of them so I decided to catch up some rest as we were going forwards in the time zone. The initial landing in the Green Zone was a vague one and we knew that we were heading to the Combat Zone.
The time as has come for us to land in the Green Zone, in which is a safety zone for all the incoming and outgoing personnel in theater. As we landed in Kuwait, we all knew things just got a little bit more serious and time to put our game faces on. We did some training here in Kuwait because some of my fellow soldiers never been to a combat zone. The pretty much taught us what to look for when it comes to IED’s which are Improvised Explosive Device and first aid. We were only in Kuwait for about a week before the split us to go our separate ways into the combat zone. At last it was time to fly into Afghanistan on a small commercial flight to Bagram Air Base. This was it and time to head to the combat zone. When we landed the immediately spilt us up as we were deed to do the mission in different parts of the country. The platoon I was in boarded a C-17 which was a big military aircraft that house a lot of service members to the combat zone because regular civilian flights weren’t allow over there. We flew the C-17 to Camp Phoenix which was in Kabal, Afghanistan. After about a couple hours of flight we landed at Camp Phoenix and we were all rush off the plane because the mortar alert was sounding off. This was it for me as I put my game face on and prepared for the enemy. As we grab our stuff and ran towards the bunker the explosions from the mortar rounds was so loud that my ears had rung and the ground was shaking a bit. I just knew they were trying to kill us and wipe out the new group of services members entering the camp. After everything was all clear, we grab our bags and headed towards the group that we are replacing. The pretty much told us the load down of what’s going on and how often the mortar rounds will rain in. I look around the country and saw all the mountain and valleys that was surrounding us. I just knew there was some Taliban hiding waiting for us to let our ground down. As the deployment went on, the mortar attacks were about every other day and I got use to it. I just grab my weapon and ran towards the bunker. No one in our group had really got hurt but there were an occasional bumps and bruises now and then. The only time that I really got hurt, is when we went on a mission and we hit an IED. I was knocked out for about a minute as I felt a sharp pain in my shoulder. I suffer from a concussion and a torn rotator cuff because shrapnel went into my shoulder. The enemy was raining down on us and we knew we had to do something before we become over ran. We decide to strike back off the enemy until or reinforcements arrive. After that incident, I knew that the GOD was on my side and I can’t wait to get back to the states away from this madness.
So I hope you will understand the life of a US Service Member and the trials and tribulation we face when we deployment for a long duration of time. It all started with the pre-deployment ceremony with all the hugs, kisses and the good byes. Then it was the march down Green Ramp and straight to the airplane as we prepare for lift off. Finally, the deployment in the combat zone and the trials and tribulations we face during the tour. The one thing I want you to do is stop a service member and/or veteran and thank them for all their sacrifices they made for our country because freedom doesn’t come without a price. Thank You.

...Controversy in the Military For the longest time homosexuals have had to deal with discrimination everywhere, including the military. When Bill Clinton ran for president, he gave a promise to the gays he would allow them to fight, but changed his stance when elected and did not follow through on his promise. Instead Clinton issued the policy Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell that still hindered the homosexual’s chance of getting into the military. Finally, now after years of discrimination, a Representative of the House wrote a bill that will allow homosexuals the right to join and fight in the armed forces. The H.R. 1283 Military Readiness Enhancement Act of 2009 states homosexuals can join the military and should pass for the benefit of all those who serve the armed forces. Official discrimination against homosexuals began during World War II. Before World War II, it was only African Americans who had a hard time joining the military, but then the military started becoming stricter on who can join and who cannot. The military started making people take a psychological test, where anyone who wanted to join the military had to get tested by a psychiatrist (Katel). If people claimed they were gay, they could not join the armed forces. Discrimination continued in every war America has fought until Bill Clinton came along. When Clinton ran for president, he guaranteed to lift the ban that the military established on not allowing homosexuals the right to fight. To get around his campaign...

Military

...At this time the United States of America does not required men to serve in the military like other countries? Well I have wondered why myself to. But I am going to point out three reasons on why I think men should have to serve in this essay. One being men need to learn discipline. Two we need to keep this country that we live in safe and secured. And lastly to boost our economy and put more people to work. Men should serve in the military to lean discipline. Men these day have no respect for there parents let alone the cops. The military will help train them to respect people above them. Not only that it will help them with work ethic from the discipline point of view to be able to do their job and work hard at doing it. They will break you down and build you back up through training and physical training. If you screw up they will teach you how to act and then make you do some kind of physical training so it will sink you to your head. It is vital in our country to keep it protected to keep our freedoms that our fore fathers fought for and all the men and women before us. There for all men should be required to serve in the military. We are in a world of terrorism in this day and age, for example September 11, 2001 automatically comes to mind when I think of terrorism. Therefore men shouldn’t have to be asked to join they should just want to join if they want to keep their freedoms that they have. Where are the jobs in this country? Where is the money in this country...

Military Spending

...Government Limit the Military Spending? There is a product, each country only have one. To buy it, everybody in this country should dig their pocket. This product is named military spending. With the large amounts of research and the development of high technology weapons, regional warming of local wars, armed conflicts, and intensified arms race, the series of a new arms race, military deployment and new high-growth military spending boost are being performed on the international stage. However, governments are concerned about seeking “peace via war”. As the arms trade is the major cause of suffering for human beings, governments should limit their military spending; nobody in the world wants war. Under such rhetoric combined with powerful lobbying of the military industries, governments are intentionally aiding military, because the military spending is an important indicator to reflect the dimension of a country’s military strength, and also a major factor of the military strength. As it is a serious issue in the world and so important for every country, every country values this issue as a primary one and pay special attention on it. As each country has different situation and government systems, there are different views towards military spending. Some people suggest increasing the military spending while some people suggest governments to cut the military spending. Some people think that government should keep increasing the military spending, the reasons...

Fighting In The Military

...The military has, and always will be, the sole binding agent that holds our nation together. There is no braver act one can do than risk his or her life to defend the ground which our founding fathers and many other people have and will continue to fight for. Often today I find myself surrounded by people far too involved in technology; phones, internet, social media in general, all brilliant inventions yet all so detrimental to the young minds of my peers. Often we forget how lucky we are to be able to call America our home and know what it means to be truly free. Too often the sacrifices men and women have made and continue to make everyday in order to call this land ours have faded away; lost in the pages of history textbooks or dead in stories that were never passed down through the generations. It is sad to say that in my generation I feel young adults have...

(DoDD, 2011) To become a soldier one must first visit a local recruiting office; there a person may engage in talks with a recruiter, the recruiter’s main job is to help assess the civilian enquires about their military desires, the recruiter must talk to a recruit and his legal guardian or parents as no one under 18 can’t make decisions for themselves without their parents/ guardians permission. The recruiter then will start the process, one of the recruiter’s first assignments is to get the civilian ASVAB scores from their local high school or if the recruit is from out of town they can be retested on the ASVAB. The ASVAB stands for Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery test and it accesses a recruit’s probability for enlistment, military job placement and career exploration after the military. ASVAB scoring is based on (IRT) Item Response Theory, this model is used because it measures the examinee’s ability to be placed on the same scale as everyone else and each test is tailored to a specific ability level needed when the examinee picks their military job. The IRT model uses the (3pl) in which measures...

Women In The Military

...there equal opportunity for Females in the U.S military? Females have not been successfully integrated into the U.S military, because most women do not have the same opportunities as men. There have been limits placed on what they can do, where they can serve, and what divisions they can join. Women in the U.S military should be provided with equal opportunities as men because women can do the same things that a man can do when it comes to jobs, service, and leadership in the U.S military. According to Boldry and Wood (2001) During the 1970s, many military training programs in the United States prolonged their admissions policies to include women. Perhaps most noteworthy is the federal legislation passed in 1976 enabling women to be appointed to the navy, army, and air force service academies. The first women were to be admitted in 1976 to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy during the academy's centennial and the nation's bicentennial. However, this action created confusion about the...

Military Deployments

...Affects of Multiple Deployments on Military Service Members and Families during Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF): Time Period 2001-2012 Gina Pagano-Briglin, MSW University of the Incarnate Word 3 December 2012 I. Introduction Since September 11, 2001, there have been significant changes in the security measures of air travel, financial security, but one of the most significant changes is that of military operations. The United States began combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan on October 7, 2001 in response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks officially referred to as Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). Since October 2001, about 1.9 million service members have been deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq (Asbury & Martin, 2011). OEF/OIF has many unique features with regard to the military forces being sent to fight oversees. The all-volunteer military has experienced multiple deployments to the combat areas, with an increased use of the National Guard and Reserve Components, higher numbers of deployed women and parents of young children, and increases in the number of service members surviving severe injuries and other side effects from combat (Shaw & Hector, 2010). Service members may be subjected to more than one deployment. Studies show that overall about 40% of current military service members have been deployed more than once, with over one quarter serving...

Suicides in the Military

...Suicides in the Military Over the Past 10 Years The most common myths about suicide in the military have changed since the events of September 11, 2001. Previously, it was a white male, between the age of 18-25, with one or more of the following factors: relationship issues, money problems, and job satisfaction. Since the war in Afghanistan stared on Sep 13, 2001, the age has increased from 25 to 44, race does not necessarily matter anymore, and add the pressures of not knowing what is going to happen and always wondering when/if “your time is up”. Along with this, add in the stress of preparing for your deployment, the stress of leaving your family, the stress of ensuring everyone is properly taken care of if the inevitable happens, and the stress of possibly, or actually, losing subordinates or friends to enemy gunfire or Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), just to name a few. More males over the age of 30, who have had at least one deployment to Afghanistan or Iraq and have seen some heavy fighting or have lost friends to enemy mortars/rockets on main operating bases, have committed or attempted to commit suicide in the past five years, then ever before. After all the stress of combat, coming home to a life of no danger of snipers or IEDs, mortar/rocket attacks to your base, causes even more stress then people can even imagine. “Flashbacks”, hyper-vigilance, suspicion, and the fear of loud noises are also a major concern and cause undue stress to the sevicemember...

Military Strengths

...Being in the military has shaped who I am in countless ways. While everyone is born with predisposed personality traits, many other characteristics are honed due to their environment. I would argue that my three greatest strengths are mix of natural ability and from my upbringing. Being raised on a cattle farm, hard work came with the territory, but many strengths that I now possess were due to later experiences in the military that have molded me in to the person I am today. I am a natural introvert. Interacting with people is not something I am naturally fond of but this did not bode well for me as an Army officer. You are expected to lead Soldiers and Non-Commission Officer, most of which are your age or older. To overcome my awkward shyness, I had to adapt and in doing so I became very adept at how to deal with others around me. Most call this emotional intelligence. The challenge is new with each person as they all have unique personalities,...

Mcdonaldization In The Military

...I believe the process of bureaucratization has both further and hindered the progress of this nation. Therefore, if you consider the US military, you will find plenty of examples of how it falls into “Peter Principle” around how a soldier gets promoted till they must find some dependence amongst their subordinates to meet his mission quota. Two examples of positive reinforcement within the military’s bureaucracy are: - Every soldier is taught the same trade within their desired profession following in line with “McDonaldization” of the military around each soldier know what the other one is capable of demonstrating. - Soldiers are more than willing to become like “cogs in a machine” to achieve a single desired goal of completing their mission....

Military Journey

...“Left, left, left right left!” There I was marching down the scorching hot asphalt in the middle of July, summer of 2009 alongside my flight. First week of hell, basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, rethinking what I got myself into. Should I have just gone to college instead of volunteering for the service or should I be here serving the country? Week one seemed like the longest week I’ve ever experienced. Here we are in the second week of this prison like training. Staff sergeant (SSgt) Feete shouts “Wake up, you nasties,” it was finally time to get our uniforms issued from supply. Standing in an enormous room along the wall where they threw different parts of our uniforms at us. Last we receive our blouse with nothing on it besides the boring ABU pattern. They told us that we weren’t good enough and hadn’t earned the right to wear our name and Air Force patch on the uniforms. Feeling like I have been living in the barracks for eternity, even though it was only week three. Finally getting into the routine and starting to understand the military lifestyle. Day after day we are learning new tools we will be able to use in this career. Week three was all about self-aid buddy care, where we learn to treat our own wounds and provide first response to combat related wounds to other airmen. SSgt Feete comes in the class room: “Hope y’all aren’t as stupid as you all look, test time ladies.” We had to take a written, verbal and practical exam to pass the week or we...

Dying In The Military

...John 3:16 states “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son and whoever believes shall not perish but have eternal life.” This scripture has a great deal of power to it. I associate the above scripture to the military. The military has fought for us so countless times. They have repeatedly laid their life on hold just for Americans. When they could be spending time with their family and children. Many of my peers in school have lost someone special as a casualty of war. Although I have not lost anyone personally, the effects of American soldiers dying in war hits home to our community. While I was researching, I heard a song about a lady who woke up to someone at the door. Unfortunately, the stranger was emissary from England...
