...Does workforce diversity always result in better organizational performance? In today’s global competitive environment, workforce diversity became a competitive edge that helps firms better understand different cultures and different ways of conducting business globally (“Benefits and problems”). Taylor Cox emphasized that increasing workforce diversity for better organizational performance is still an essential business issue that receives great attention, as “most of today's small business owners and corporate executives recognize that attention to the challenges and opportunities associated with the growing trend toward culturally diverse work forces can be a key factor in overall business success”. Rob McInnes identified 7 factors that motivate companies to diversify their workforces: As a Social Responsibility: companies exercise corporate social responsibility role by diversifying their workforces and supporting their good living. As an Economic Payback: “diversifying the workforce, particularly through initiatives like welfare-to-work, can effectively turn tax users into tax payers”. As a Resource Imperative: companies shouldn’t be hindered from attracting best talents available in the markets because of discriminatory practices. As a Legal Requirement: law requires companies not to be discriminatory in their employment practices or they will be exposed to penalties, as “fines and loss of contracts with government agencies”. As a Marketing Strategy: companies...

...Philosophy in Literature and Films (HS3033) Assignment Sashank K EE11B124 3 November 2014 1 1 An Introduction to Moral Philosophy and some of its Theories Most humans judge the moral consequences of what they and others do. They classify everything as good or bad. Thus, ethical philosophy is a branch of philosophy which is relevant at some level to even laymen, who are not philoso- phers. All of us make moral judgments based on some preconceived or preexist- ing moral principle. Investigation of how such a principle came about, whether it is right or wrong and such discussion on the principle constitutes the branch of ethics or moral philosophy. Ethics is further subdivided into three areas. These are meta-ethics, normative ethics and applied...

...When the Greeks interacted with other cultures, they spread their culture to all parts of the world and history. They had the audacity to branch out to other areas of life that other civilizations had tried to dwell in before. Because of their discoveries, this therefore influenced the rest of the world, but did not change it. One of their major influences was politics and religion. With politics, the Greeks discovered through trial and error that Democracy worked for them, and that tyranny and anarchy did not. They also tested oligarchy and monarchies, which appeared to work, and are found throughout history and in the modern day world. Religion was another aspect that influenced the western world. The Greeks were polytheistic by nature,...

...Aesthetician" redirects here. For a cosmetologist who specializes in the study of skin care, see Esthetician. Aesthetics (/ɛsˈθɛtɪks/; also spelled æsthetics and esthetics) is a branch ofphilosophy dealing with the nature of art, beauty, and taste, with the creation and appreciation of beauty.[1][2] It is more scientifically defined as the study ofsensory or sensori-emotional values, sometimes called judgments of sentimentand taste.[3] More broadly, scholars in the field define aesthetics as "critical reflection on art, culture and nature."[4][5] More specific aesthetic theory, often with practical implications, relating to a particular branch of the arts is divided into areas of aesthetics such as art theory, literary theory, film theory and music theory. An example from art theory is aesthetic theory as a set of principles underlying the work of a particular artist or artistic movement: such as the Cubist aesthetic.[6] Contents Edit The word aesthetic is derived from the Greek αἰσθητικός (aisthetikos, meaning "esthetic, sensitive, sentient"), which in turn was derived from αἰσθάνομαι (aisthanomai, meaning "I perceive, feel, sense").[7] The term "aesthetics" was appropriated and coined with new meaning in the German form Æsthetik(modern spelling Ästhetik) by Alexander Baumgarten in 1735. Aesthetics and the philosophy of artEdit Aesthetics is for the artist as Ornithology is for the birds. — Barnett Newman[8][9] For some, aesthetics is considered a synonym for the philosophy of...

...business. The new name, Nucor Corporation, came along with the change in 1972 to break away from the nuclear image and embrace the new venture. This transformational change was due to the vision of new CEO and president, F. Kenneth Iverson. His strategic initiatives revealed to be a blessing as Nucor Corporation has been successfully growing since its creation. Discuss the trends in the steel industry and how it may impact Nucor’s strategy. The electric arc furnace technology was introduced in 1960. The “mini-mills” was limited when compared to integrated mills in the industry. In addition, the operating costs of companies are lower compared to integrated mills because they use electric arc furnaces that can produce various steel products to minimize production costs. (Thompson, Strickland, & Gamble, 2010). Nucor Corporation started using thin-slab casting during the 1980’s and it was their newest technology at that time. The electric arc furnace using Mini-mill were still operating and they are the competitors of the company. They continue to operate because they have secured market segments which demand strip products and flat-rolled carbon sheets. These products contribute around 50-60 percent of the total production in the steel industry (Thompson, Strickland, & Gamble,...

...Economic Diplomacy – The Case of China and Zambia Marcov Alexandru Cristian Economic Diplomacy – The Case of China and Zambia Introduction Former Indian diplomat, Kishan S Rana defines Economic Diplomacy as “the process through which countries tackle the outside world, to maximize their national gain in all the fields of activity including trade, investment and other forms of economically beneficial exchanges, where they enjoy comparative advantage.; it has bilateral, regional and multilateral dimensions, each of which is important”.[1] China has emphatically registered its presence on the African economic and political landscape in the last decade. Among other things, the volume of trade between China and Africa has risen steadily from USD 10 billion a year in 2000 to over USD 40 billion in 2005, and is projected to cross USD 100 billion by 2010. To celebrate and cement these growing ties, thirty five heads of state from Africa assembled in Beijing at the invitation of the Chinese president Hu Jintao for the inaugural China-Africa Summit (referred to as the Summit henceforth) in November 2006. More than 2000 trade deals were signed in Beijing as China promised USD 5 billion in aid and credit to African countries in the next few years, and vowed to train thousands of its young men and women.[2] Zambia is a land-locked country in Southern Africa with a population of 13 460 305. Zambia’s natural resources include copper, cobalt, zinc, lead...

...government for passing it. The primary reason for this conflict is because no two people will ever have the same opinion at the same time on a certain topic. The Federal Government is made of a grand total of 88,576 separate divisions; 50 states, 88,525 local and 1 national. Georgia is represented in this count, being recognized as a state which was founded by James Oglethorpe in the 1720’s with thoughts of promoting the people’s welfare. Nearly 10 years later, Oglethorpe led approximately 120 settlers to establish the 13th colony of the New World. Although the new settlers disagreed with slavery, it was nearly inevitable. Cotton was the primary crop grown in Georgia and slaves were used to pick it in order to send it to the British textile mills to create clothing and other necessities. During this time, there was no other way of dividing the cotton from its seeds, so slaves were the number one resource of growing and harvesting the influential crop. In 1777, Georgia signed on to the Declaration of Independence and soon established its first of ten state constitutions. Following the first, the second constitution would be added in 1789 which provided a bicameral type of government, modeled by the first three Articles of the federal Constitution. Finally, in 1793, slaves would no longer use their hands to pry seeds from cotton daily. With the invention of the cotton gin, seeds could be divided efficiently and cause Georgia to begin its plantation society. Slavery continued growing...

...The role visual style plays in communicating the ideas, themes and issues raised by the film Before to the introduction of ‘auteur theory’ Douglas Sirk directed films that were illustrious for classical Hollywood narrative. However, he used his power as director to step outside of the Mainstream Hollywood narrative and stylistic conventions (Core 1994), using techniques such as mise-en-scene to communicate the ideas, themes and issues raised in his films. All That Heaven Allows directed by Sirk is a perfect example of his clever use of visual style to communicate themes of social status, repression and nature. The film was popular at its release as ‘critics were well aware that Sirk's films attracted a humorous popular reception’ (Philip Core p132) but was critically dismissed as a women’s weeping movie (Nick James, 1994). Told from a women's point of view and post WWII exposure gives a sense of context and what life was like for women of the time. As Carrie quotes from ‘walden’s book’ it becomes evident that mise-en-scene enriches the film and gets an insight into post WW2 life. Carrie is trapped, however it is not just the dialogue of the film that is used to expose her entrapment. Carrie is represented as a prisoner in her own home. The use of the TV double comments on what Carrie is going through. Sirk presents the television as a symbol of repression and defeat, a tiresome life. Sirk uses the television set to explore the theme of Carrie as an onlooker on life and...
