...Theo 104 | Television and Your Child’s Mind | Advertisement on Youths | | Latonya Jones | 11/25/2013 | Advertisements that are not suitable for youths can affect their minds because they can pick up bad habits from seeing something on television that they are too young to see. We are too familiar with the saying “TV Can Rot a Child’s Mind.” But as long as we as parents do our jobs as monitors of what our children are watching this wouldn’t have to be an issue. Before us as responsible parents decide to sit our children in front of a television set we should ask ourselves this very important question, which is how much t.v is too much t.v for our children? The reason why this question should be given some thought is because television can affect a child’s mind in a way that could be negative or positive. What we most definitely do not want is a negative affect which results in long lasting to damage to your child or children’s development. For the most part in the early stages of a child’s development they are primarily visually stimulated and will be learning pretty much everything from what they see. So to be aware of what and how much your child or children are taking in is a number one priority. Another thing that I would suggest, being a parent of two is setting time limits like an hour or two a day of television daily. Nowadays there are so many different kinds of t.v programs for your children to watch that are suitable for them, for example “My Little...

...How to Train Your Creative Mind As Louis Pasteur once famously said, “Chance favors only the prepared mind.” To be an innovative entrepreneur, you want to foster creativity in your daily life so that your mind is ready when opportunity arises. “Creative ideas often come from unusual combinations,” explains Steven Smith, professor of cognitive psychology at Texas A&M University. “The best solution is not going to be the thing everyone thinks of. It’s going to be something unusual.” These unusual combinations, called “remote associations,” are related ideas that may seem unrelated at first glance. They are the essence of creative thinking. To cultivate creativity, you want to increase your chances of stumbling on an unexpected link. Here are four strategies you can use in your everyday life that will train your mind to be more creative in business: 1. Shake up your routine. To expand your creative horizons, surround yourself with a broad range of perspectives and experiences. A diverse workplace is helpful, but it isn’t enough. Outside work, seek variety in what you eat, where you hang out, the types of art you look at, the places you travel, or the books you read. “Diversity introduces all kinds of new stimuli,” Smith says. “It opens you up to a number of new possibilities.” You are more likely to find an unusual solution when you have more options at your fingertips. 2. Cast a wide net for feedback. We often discuss important ideas with the same inner...

...7 Simple Ways to Clear Your Mind Do you ever feel like your brain is tied in knots? Do your thoughts resemble a massive ball of string, wound messily and tightly together? Are you unsure of what to do next? This feeling is all too common in a world of sensory overload and multiple responsibilities. The ultra busy person sometimes feels like thoughts don’t even get a chance to fully form. At times of high stress, where we are trying to satisfy multiple demands at once, it feels like our minds are being constricted with warring priorities. Let’s talk about some ways to untangle, unwind, and refocus. Here are seven simple tips to clear your mind and get your mental house in order. You can try any one of them, several or even all of them. They are listed here in no particular order: 1. Write madly to get some mental breathing room. Writing is a proven way to help organize your thoughts. Morning pages, as popularized by *Julia Cameron* in The Artist’s Way, are a way to adopt the habit of clearing your mind on paper. Three handwritten pages, done daily, can clear out your conscious thoughts and bring unconscious clutter to the surface. Some people write memoirs as a more in-depth way to clear their consciences, but we’re not trying to do that here. We’re just trying to open up some space for your thoughts to breathe. If you don’t have the time to devote to writing regular morning pages, consider a speedier approach. Try writing as quickly as possible with whatever time you have....

...Opening Your Mind and Formulating New Opinions Many people are strong headed and do not display their full feelings towards something; when they do, it’s usually an opinion of theirs that cannot be altered or even thought about changing. I too was once someone who was very close minded about a lot of things and only described my thoughts about a subject or issue to be quite once sided and would listen to other’s opinions about the same topic but never regarded to be meaningful. My experience with LSD has honestly opened my mind more in one way or another; mainly with accepting things for what they are and how they are presented to me. You can’t change how your brain interprets one concept to another you can only describe how you feel towards the issue or thought at hand. Only people who have seen goals and relationships between each other in a different light; can fully accept everything the way it is presented to them and appreciate the things we have that make us who we are today. Those are the people who create bonds with others and simply act as one when the time is right. I believe that relationships can be enhanced when two or more people share the little box theory, this is something that cannot be passed down to future generations. Now I’m not saying that this experience with LSD has made me open to just about everything because I’m not. I’m only stating that it has shifted the way I feel towards many different concepts and ideas such as social issues. How can people...

...Econometrics (Economics 360) Syllabus: Spring 2015 Instructor: Ben Van Kammen Office: Krannert 531 Office Hours: Friday, 10 a.m.-noon Email: bvankamm@purdue.edu Meeting Location: KRAN G010 Meeting Days/Times: TR 1:30-2:45 p.m. (001) TR 3-4:15 p.m. (002) TR 4:30-5:45 p.m. (003) Course Description This is an upper division economics course required for students pursuing a BS in economics. It is one of the few courses that explicitly covers empirical methods, i.e., the analysis of observed economic behavior in the form of data. Empirics stand in contrast to theory, e.g., micro and macro, about how agents behave. Despite this under-representation, empirical analysis comprises a large part of economists’ workload and is one of the most practical skills that an economics student can learn. Course Objectives In this class students will: 1. perform statistical and practical inference based on the results of empirical analysis, 2. identify useful characteristics of estimators, e.g., unbiasedness, consistency, efficiency, 3. state predictions of theoretical economic models in terms of testable hypotheses, 4. model economic relationships using classical methods, such as Ordinary Least Squares, derive the properties of estimators related to these methods, and 5. perform estimation using methods discussed in class using software, 6. perform diagnostic tests that infer whether a model’s assumptions are invalid, 7. evaluate empirical models based on whether their resulting estimators...

...Kimesha Washington Erin Price Intro to Online Education 7 March 2015 The biblical foundations relate to scripture and the importance of “renewing our minds” in many different ways. Higher education fits that calling because by renewing your mind you start off fresh. Each time a semester begins or another class starts your ability to stay focused, organized, and knowledgeable depends on it. The biblical foundations are a stepping stone for students. By renewing our minds we are able to act as God has instructed us to. A mind that hasn’t been renewed results in wicked actions while one with a “renewed mind” acts in a Godly way. (Roman 12:2) “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” In so little words the scripture does not want us to be a follower in this world but instead act as leader by renewing our minds. By doing so it is God’s will that we act accordingly. Renewing our minds creates a new journey and direction when you may have been going down the wrong one. (Proverbs 1:7) “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instructions.” Act as God has instructed us to do so because those who do not obey his word look down on wisdom and instructions and therefore do not follow his word. (Proverbs 19:27) “Stop listening to instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge...

...Battle For Your Mind (3 of 8) Series: The Battle Is The Lord's Dr. Stan Coffey II Corinthians 10:3-5 I. SATAN'S DESIRE II. SATAN'S DEVICES III. SATAN'S DOORS IV. SATAN'S DEFEAT It is good to see you. If you have a copy of the word of God, I want you to take God's word and turn to Second Corinthians Chapter 10 and tonight we want to continue to think about the battle is the Lord's. We are thinking about spiritual warfare. I don't know about you but I am in a battle. Amen? I suspect you are too if you are a believer. Somebody said if you hadn't met the devil, you are probably going the same direction he is. Amen? So if you are going toward God, you are going to have the devil try to stand between you and God and not the devil literally but demonic influence, demons. We studied last seek how to overcome the devil and we spoke about that and we spoke about how Jesus had vanquished the devil. The devil has been vanquished but the devil has not been banished. That is, the Bible says that God now has given us authority over him and power over him but he is not yet in the lake of fire. There is no need for any believer to be defeated by Satan because the Bible says we have been given the victory, the victory has been won and we don't fight for victory, we fight from victory. But nevertheless, we are still in a battle. Now look at Second Corinthians 10 and verse 3, "FOR THOUGH WE WALK IN THE FLESH, WE DO NOT WAR AFTER THE FLESH. (FOR THE WEAPONS OF OUR WARFARE...

...Essay - Chachau Bant: Mind Your Language Our language is a very big part of us, whether you are Spanish, Danish or English you can be proud of your languages. Every language have a lot of heritage, your parents taught it to you, like it was taught to them by their parents. But not everyone can feel proud, or at least can be sure, that they will get the chance to teach their language on to their children. This is one of the main themes in Tom Law’s article “Chachau Bant: Mind Your Language” from the sabotage times from 2013. In his article Law writes about how the English have completely smothered the Welsh language. In his article, Tom Law starts his article by telling the reader, the English speaker, that they do not understand the following problem: “it’s hard to give a toss about language when you’re an English speaker” (p. 1, ll. 1-2), but afterwards he tries to explains it, but with a little twist. Law sets up a scenario for the English speakers, where he starts out by letting the German take control of Europe and thereby making German the main language, this causes English to be inconvenient and therefore going extinct. This is Law’s way of explaining how English made the Welsh language a thing of the past. Law therefore uses pathos to make the English people feel what Welsh people have gone through. He gives them a scenario where they are the victims. Law also tells about how the school children got bullied and punished for speaking Welsh in the school, appealing...

...Cachau Bant: Mind Your Language Back in the days when the British Empire ruled, the English language spread all across the world forcing a lot of people to take upon English if they wanted better in life. Because of English being one of the most dominant languages in the world, a lot of native languages were lost a long the way - one of those languages being Welsh. Why and how this happened to particular Welsh is what Tom Law discusses in his article Cachau Bant: Mind Your Language from 2013. In this article Tom Law accuses the British Empire for being the cause of the people living in Wales and speaking Welsh dropping drastically during the last couple of 100 years. The cause of this being that England took over the Welsh school system and made teaching English a first priority and Welsh was being taught like German or French is taught in schools nowadays. "[Welsh] was treated the same as any other foreign language – like French or German. It gave you tourist Welsh – enough to ask directions to the nearest zoo in Colwyn Bay – and not much else.” Frustrated with how people today react when hearing about the Welsh losing their native language, Law makes up a fictional scenario where everybody speaks German instead of English. The people who still speak English are considered as being dumb or poor, and with no job prospects if you cannot speak German. Law does admit that this is a rather drastic example, “Now this all sounds absolutely nuts (…) But this is what has happened to...

...look at it, the mass media occurs in a person’s life on a daily basis. Which has a severe effect on the choices you make and the morals you live by. One cannot trust everything they see on TV either. Most commercials you would see today are overly exaggerated just to persuade consumers into buying the product. For example, in the 1930’s America’s first “drug czar” Harry J. Anslinger, began one of the world’s greatest public relations campaigns just to demoralize marijuana by telling apparent lies to society and persuading them to believe it. Such as that marijuana is more harmful to the body than alcohol, and tobacco. 70 years later people still believe the lies even after decades of scientific proof. Seeing as how media can “control your mind” we as a whole need to be more aware of it on a daily basis. The mass media has a responsibility to use only truthful explanations as opposed to exaggeration when arguing against the legalization of marijuana. The campaigns that Anslinger participated in consisted of many movies, musicals, and advertisements all demoralizing the usage, and or the distribution of marijuana. The promotion of marijuana making you insane was his main theme throughout his claims. Every single one of his claims missed some very important facts that make them obviously false. Studies over the years has proved that marijuana is less dangerous than alcohol or tobacco, and it is not a “gateway drug” leading to the usage of other drugs. Harry tried to promote these...

...”Cachau Bant: Mind your own language” is an article written by Tom Law, that appeared on the website Sabotage times, an online magazine that’s meant to create public debate. The article discusses how a country with so much culture and history like Wales can be stripped of their native language, without any furthermore questions. The author aims to prove that the language of a country is what helps to develop and maintain the countries culture, without the language the culture will not remain the same. In addition to that Law manages to discus the reasons behind the eradication of the Welsh language. This essay aims to analyse the reasons behind the use of history in the article through an understanding of the way in which Law draws in his audience through the tone and style used in the article. The topic that Tom Law covers in this article is of most interest to Welsh people, who still haven’t given in to the storm of the English implementation in Wales. He explains how English has become such a dominant language, to be exact the third most common language in the world, and how English speakers do not have to worry about losing their language “It’s hard to give a toss about language when you’re an English speaker. Because losing your language is not something you’ll ever have to worry about; thanks to the British Empire.” Compared to welsh that has slowly been drifting away for 150 years. When considering the fact that the reason behind the eradication of Welsh from the...

...Introduction For many students making the decision to go to college is a very hard one. This decision becomes even more challenging for those of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender (GLTB) community. What is an homosexual? Homosexuals are defined as people who are sexually attracted by other persons of the same sex. Most people may refer to them in words like "gays" or "gay people" as common terms instead of "homosexuals", whereas "lesbians" are only used to describe female homosexuals. These radical definitions of homosexuals already indicate that this minority group is evenly distributed throughout the entire society. Homosexuals can be both men and women. They exist in all classes, social groups, races, positions, and countries, regardless of their age or origin. Believe it or not but as far as historians can trace back the past, homosexuals have always been in existence, from Julius Caesar to Alexander the Great. How does a student know if he/she is gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender? This is a question a lot of scientists want an answer to when concerning the GLBT community. Finding his/her identity is a good way to become stress free! After a student is able to find their identity, there is a greater chance him/her will become more comfortable with them self. College is seen as a place for individuals to express themselves and figure out whom he/she is this becomes more challenging for students of the GLBT community. While the acceptance of GLBT individuals...
