When I was younger I used to go on hunting and fishing trips with my father. In scrapbooks one might see a young child around three years old on a man’s back in a baby backpack surrounded by mesquite and cacti. That baby was me. During one fishing trip, when I was about the same age as I mentioned above, my father and I had a bucket that was filled with live minnows that he intended on using as bait. I, however, had a different use for them. After a couple of minutes of tying hooks and setting up bobbers my father turned around to retrieve a couple of minnows in order for him to bait the hooks. Instead of finding minnows, he found me. Upon closer inspection he realized that I had used the minnows for my own fishing experience. I had stuffed

Or do you mean Corporate Legal Liability?” The bold headline in the newspapers Say “ONGC Spent 405.53 Cr on Corporate social responsibility”, “RIL Spent 303 Cr on CSR” But no newspaper ever said that deaths of tens of thousands of the Olive Ridley turtles that nest on these sandy beaches were killed by Oil and Natural Gas Cooperation of India (ONGC) and Reliance Industries (RIL). Oil and Natural Gas Cooperation of India (ONGC) and Reliance Industries (RIL) had carried out the off shore drilling in the coast of Orissa. This has led to the deaths of tens of thousands of the Olive Ridley turtles that nest on these sandy beaches. With the number of these turtles already plummeting, they are well on their way towards extinction. Corporates are sugar painting their obscene atrocities by the name of CSR activities. CSR Quote of KFC “KFC would create more employment and improve infrastructure”. “KFC is as committed to the environment as we are to our food and to our customers” But who knows that the chicken they serve is full of chemicals, and the birds are given hormones, antibiotics and arsenic chemicals to fatten them quickly. It would cause a high rate of obesity, heart disease and cancer due to the sodium and cholesterol contained in fast food. Kurt Vonnegut Literary Research Paper

...Ganelle Curry Professor Meredyth Puller English 102-12 February 27, 2013 Literary Research Paper This literary research paper is based on the book Welcome to the Monkey House: A Collection of Short Works by Kurt Vonnegut. Welcome to the Monkey House: A Collection of Short Works consists of 25 short stories most of which had previously appeared in magazines such as The Atlantic Monthly, Ladies Home Journal, Fantasy and Science Fiction Magazine, Collier’s Magazine, Saturday Evening Post, The New York Times, Esquire, Venture, and Cosmopolitan. The title story appeared in Playboy magazine the same year the collection was released. Eleven of the stories were reprinted from Vonnegut’s 1961 short story collection Canary in a Cat House (Vonnegut). This paper will focus on four futuristic science fiction stories from the collection. These stories, “Welcome to the Monkey House”, “Harrison Bergeron”, “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow”, and “Unready to Wear” all share a dystopian science fiction theme. Science and technology are supposed to make the world a better place, but instead, Vonnegut concludes they only create a new set of problems (Farrell, “Science and Technology in the Works of Kurt Vonnegut”). Television is often a target of satire in much of his fiction from the 1950’s. He describes it as desensitizing and numbing while deceiving the masses (Werlock). Vonnegut uses satire and pessimism throughout these dystopian stories. Satire is a special form of literature...

Coroperate Government

...Business School, Leeds Metropolitan University, Leeds, UK, and Clive Smallman Commerce Division, Lincoln University, Canterbury, New Zealand Abstract Purpose – This paper seeks to examine the mainstream theories of corporate governance in an attempt to suggest that their underlying assumptions and ideologies are misplaced and ought to give way to an emerging pluralistic view of the governing process in order to understand any governance contribution to the dynamics of the business environment. Design/methodology/approach – The paper engages with the traditional literature and views on governance models from law, business and organisational studies perspectives. It then considers the environment and changes in the environment and how those challenge the relevance of the traditional approach, drawing upon the impacts on the fluidity of management and governance perspectives and practices in the global economy. Findings – The reflections and analysis confirm the view that the underlying assumptions of existing models and regulatory frameworks for governance are misplaced and it is suggested, with reason, that a pluralistic view and framework are better than the current dualistic approach to provide a better understanding of corporate governance in today’s dynamic business environments. Originality/value – The paper develops a new model and framework for governance practice and regulation and seeks to persuade policy makers and commentators that the global business environment needs...

...application must be successful and effectiveness high. As some oil would come ashore, discussion remains on what effectiveness is required to significantly reduce the shoreline impact. A major issue is the actual effectiveness during spills so that these values can be used in estimates for the future. The second motivation for using dispersants is to reduce the impact on birds and mammals on the water surface. The benefits of using dispersants to reduce impacts on wildlife still remain unknown. The third motivation for using dispersants is to promote the biodegradation of oil in the water column. The effect of dispersants on biodegradation is still a matter of dispute. Some papers state that dispersants inhibit biodegradation others indicate that dispersants have little effect on biodegradation. The most recent papers, however, confirm that inhibition is a matter of the surfactant in the dispersant itself and the factors of environmental conditions. It is clear, on the basis of current literature that the surfactants in some of the current dispersant formulations can inhibit biodegradation. No...

Corporate Governance Role of the Media

...The Corporate Governance Role of the Media Alexander Dyck* Harvard Business School And Luigi Zingales University of Chicago May 2002 Abstract Do media play any role in corporate governance? In this paper we argue that media pressure corporate managers and directors to behave in ways that are “socially acceptable”. Sometimes this coincides with shareholders’ value maximization, others not. We provide both anecdotal and systematic evidence that media affect companies’ policy toward the environment and the amount of corporate resources that are diverted to the sole advantage of controlling shareholders. Our results have important consequences for the focus of the corporate governance debate and for the feasibility of reforms aimed at improving corporate governance around the world. * We thank Mehmet Beceren for assistance in preparing the data and Rakhesh Khurana, Jay Lorsch,, Forest Reinhardt, Richard Vietor, Andy Zelleke and seminar participants at Harvard Business School for helpful comments on an earlier draft. Alexander Dyck gratefully acknowledges financial support from the Division of Research of Harvard Business School and Luigi Zingales from the George Stigler Center at the University of Chicago. Sell and split proceeds Incompetent management or ownership Need money Business is declining (e.g. a buggywhip company) Industry-specific conditions Economies of scale BASIC DEFINITIONS: MERGER: Owners of separate, roughly equal sized firms pool their interests in a single firm. Surviving firm takes on the assets and liabilities of the selling firm. PURCHASE: Purchasing firm pays for all the assets or all the stock of the selling firm. Distinction between a purchase and a merger depends on the final position of the shareholders of the constituent firms. TAKEOVER: A stock purchase offer in which the acquiring firm buys a controlling block of stock in the target. This enables purchasers to elect the board of directors. Both hostile and friendly takeovers exist. FREEZE-OUTS (also SQUEEZE-OUTS or CASH-OUTS): Transactions that eliminate minority SH interests. HORIZONTAL MERGERS: Mergers between competitors. This may create monopolies. Government responds by enacting Sherman Act and Clayton Act VERTICAL MERGERS: Mergers between companies which operate at different phases of production (e.g. GM merger with Fisher Auto Body.) Vertical mergers prevents a company from being held up by a supplier or consumer of goods. LEVERAGED BUYOUTS (LBOs): A private...
