CHAPTER 1
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Supply Chain Management is a major concern in many industries as Companies realize the importance of creating an integrated relationship with their suppliers and customers. According to the Global Supply Chain Forum (GSFC), Supply Chain Management is defined as “the integration of key business processes from end user through original suppliers that provide products, services, and information that add value for customer and other stakeholders. We can only talk about Supply Chain Management, if there is a proactive relationship between a buyer and supplier and the integration is across the whole supply chain, not just first tier suppliers. The supply chain encompasses all activities associated with the flow and transformation of goods from the raw materials stage, through to the end user, as well as the associated information flows. Supply chain management (SCM) is the integration of all these activities through improved supply chain relationships, to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage. For many companies, it has become clear that a supply chain that flows information and material best can be a significant differentiator, the competitive winner.
Supply chain management (SCM) systems these are the more outward facing systems, focusing on helping the firm manage its relationship with suppliers optimize the planning ,sourcing, manufacturing and delivery of products and services to the customers.

The Adoption of E-Business Technology by Smes

...Abstract The paper examines the key factors influencing the adoption of e-business technology by SMEs. To this end, the paper draws on a range of literatures on the diffusion of new information and communication technologies (ICTs), many of which have hitherto been treated as separate. The reasons for this are two-fold. First, e-business technologies are the latest in a line of new ICT technologies. When exploited successfully, ICTs have increased firm competitiveness either by raising the efficiency of internal communication and organisation and/or supply chain relationships, or by facilitating the development of new/improved products and services. Second, it is hypothesised that many of the factors affecting the successful adoption of new technologies are generic in nature. With regards to SMEs specifically, consideration of earlier research may assist us in identifying a set of enablers and barriers to e-business adoption. Hence, by explicitly acknowledging the context and prior history of research in the area, we are able to map out the dimensions of future theoretical and empirical research in e-business adoption by SMEs. In addition to drawing together factors identified by existing research, the paper highlights the implications of network externalities for the timing of technology investments and the returns that accrue to early and late adopters. It also draws attention to a number of problems associated with the analytical concept of ‘the SME’ when it...

Riordan Manufacturing

...Riordan Manufacturing’s Supply Chain Design OPS/571 August 3, 2015 Riordan Manufacturing’s Supply Chain Design Introduction A company’s supply chain design is crucial in helping to understand what the key activities and drivers are to the results produced which includes operational results, sales results, and financial results. An efficient supply chain will help a company to both efficiently and effectively produce a quality product to meet and satisfy customer demand. The key aspect involved in the design of a supply chain begins with a manufacturing strategy that will be the method of executing the plan. Next will be the understanding of the process flow by developing charts of how inputs and resources are transformed into outputs. A crucial component in evaluating a process flow is the use of key indicators and metrics to benchmark performance. Lean principles will provide a framework for process performance. Next a company must evaluate their relationships with their suppliers and understand how they affect the supply chain as this is the first step required with any successful supply chain. Then lastly sales forecasts and aggregate planning will be used to help define the requirements to meet demand. An evaluation will be conducted on a specific company to show how each of these components are implemented into the design. The company that will be evaluated is Riordan Manufacturing. Manufacturing Strategy Riordan Manufacturing produces plastic beverage...

Due to the complexity of the existing supply chain, there is an urgent need for change. Founded over a 100 years ago, Ford currently has many processes in place, that will not be changed in an easy, cost effective manner. Dell uses a virtual integration business model that has been modified throughout the past 15 years to be as efficient as possible for Dell. Implementation of virtual integration business model, similar to Dell, will make the supply chain more cost effective, therefore increasing revenues. However, based on the differences within the two industries, I recommend a partial implementation of virtual integration model. Using information technology Ford Issue Identification ...

Supply Chain Strategies

...CHAPTER 13 – STRUCTURE OF THE SUPPLY CHAIN AIMS OF THE CHAPTER Products move through a series of operations in their process. This movement usually includes a physical flow of goods, and then we refer to the flow of materials through a supply chain. This chapter introduces the concept of logistics – or supply chain management – which is responsible for this flow. The chapter looks at the broad area of design, emphasising the number of points on the supply chain, the best locations for these, and the relationships between them. The aim of the chapter is to introduce the concept of supply chain management. More specific aims are to: • Explain the role of logistics – or supply chain management Logistics – which is equivalently known as supply chain management and sometimes physical distribution – is responsible for all the physical movement of materials. This includes movement into the process from suppliers, through operations, and then out of the process to customers. It is difficult to think of any business activity that does not depend, to some extent on logistics supplying required materials. Activities generally included in logistics are procurement, inward transport, receiving, warehousing, stock control, order picking, material handling, distribution, recycling, returns and waste disposal, location and associated communications. • Appreciate the role and importance of supply chains A supply chain consists of the series of activities and organisations...

We would also like to offer our sincere gratitude to the anonymous retailer and big data analytics company that provided so much time and insight concerning their experiences with monetization of big data. 1 Corresponding Author 1 Data Monetization: A Retailer’s  Journey The ability to monetize a company’s data has been an elusive goal. However, in the era of big data, business intelligence and analytics, and cloud computing, this goal is becoming more achievable. The retail industry, with its exacting merchandising strategies and tight supply chain relationships, has taken the lead in demonstrating that monetizing data can provide a significant revenue stream and be an IT cost sharing mechanism. Point of sale, consumer loyalty, and inventory data can be sold to suppliers and some of the cost of analyzing the retailers' data can be recovered from their suppliers. This case study outlines the path one retailer followed in monetizing its data,...
