Most people think that old, elderly people are very sweet and kind by giving out cookies or giving hugs and kisses. Miss Strangeworth, on the other hand, is the complete opposite. In The Possibility of Evil, the main character Miss Adela Strangeworth is the last Strangeworth left in the town. She takes it in as her responsibility to help keep the town safe because her great grandfather founded the town. She tries to make the town a better place by writing anonymous letters that she thinks are helping, but they are very hurtful and cruel. In the story The Possibility of Evil, Shirley Jackson uses the interactions between Miss Adela Strangeworth and Mr. Lewis, Martha Harper, and the Crane Family to show readers that attempting to prevent evil in the world can actually lead to more evil. In this…show more content… One person that Miss Strangeworth attempted to help was Mr. Lewis, she try’d telling him that his grandson might be stealing, but the way she does it just makes everything worse. Another person Miss Strangeworth try’d to help was Martha Harper, she wrote a letter to her alleging her husband might be cheating on her, If she went about this another way perhaps finding out for sure if it’s true, it would be okay but writing an anonymous letter isn't good. One final person that Miss Strangeworth attempts to help is Don Crane and his family. She is nice to the Crane family but then she wrote a mean letter saying some people shouldn’t have kids. In the story “The Possibility of Evil”, Shirley Jackson uses the interactions between Miss Adela Strangeworth and Mr. Lewis, Martha Harper, and the Crane Family to show readers that attempting to prevent evil in the world can actually lead to more evil.
