1. Introduction
The purpose of this PDP module is helping people gain the personal, academic, reflective and professional skills. In this report, I am going to reflect on what I have learnt and I need to improve. In academic area my strongest skills are note-taking, referencing and information skills. However, in presentation skills, academic writing and learning skills are the area that I still need improving. In career-related skills, I am good at self-management, adaptability and team-working. On contrary, I still need to learn how to manage time efficiently, budgeting and communication well.
2. Academic skills
Three strongest skills: * Note-making.
By taking e-lesson from PDP, I know how to do note-making effectively last term and keep practice during this study period. In terms of me, I need to point out the key words from the messy information and then focus and re-organize the key words to the pattern that I am familiar with. Finally, I need to revise it and concise it times and times again to make a higher and more depth understanding of my notes. After I tried again and again, I realized that I can revise quiet easy by focusing on the main parts teacher referred in class. As note-making is pretty useful, I use it almost every day and now I can make notes quickly and precisely, which plays a vital part in my university study.

* Referencing
Referencing, this can be seen as a basis of academic writing (Neville, C. 2012). During term two periods, we had many assignments which enquires lots of ability to do reference. Because references are given whenever a source is used to help protecting the original writer and help us to study under a fair environment. After I find academic resources from summon, BBC news or guardian news each time I would present the referencing by using the Harvard reference. It can both help me and readers to know where are the sources came from, to avoid cheating from others and protect the original writer as well. In my opinion, this is a very useful skill that I still need to practice again and again to improve it. * Information skills
I used to search for information from Google engine and many unknown websites. However, I found that the results are not always tend to be academic after I take e-lessons. As a result, I may not get good result because my writing is not academic. After taking the E-lesson from PDP last term, I was taught how to get the resources I want from the student library quickly and successfully. Now, I can use Summon, Database and Mintel to get the useful information to help me with my coursework. Those are pretty helpful, and I can get access to the online resources freely and that is also I feel very interesting.
Three skills needing improvement: * Presentation skills
Different from last term, we already had lot presentations in different modules. I found that I made much improvement as E-lessons give me many guides , but I still behave not very well in both of them, which made me feel really upset during that time. For purpose to overcome my fearless, I asked many friends and teachers to help me to improve it. As a consequence, I noticed that I may get nervous in front of people. At that time I decide to have more and more practice to let me be more familiar with the resources that I am going to talk and be more confident to myself( Castro,R, Yolanda. 2011). So I study hard in this term and improve my English speaking fast. I think that I need more presentations allow me to practice and improve this skill, I will keep working on it. * Academic writing
In term one’s study, we found that academic writing is a pretty essential skills in our academic study life. As for me, in term one, I always skipped to make a framework and organise my mind before I begin to write. As a result, what I wrote is very confusing and I cannot get a very good result in my report. As I try to change this circumstance, I turned to my teachers and friends for help. It seems like I improved a lot that I can make framework each time in the beginning and ask teacher to proof read for me. I need to keep working on that and practice to learn more about academic writing. * Learning skills
During term one, I found it really hard for me to focus on teacher in the whole class. At that time, my mind would fly to somewhere else during the class, so I cannot grab the useful information from teacher. But in term 2, I feel it becomes easier as I adopt the way I learned from PDP last term that how to get great learning skills. I would grab my pens in my hand and look at teacher’s face to concentrate on them. Moreover, I would do the preview and review to make it easier for me to understand and I would not feel bored when I do not understand what teacher say. Every skill need to practice, earning skills as well. Although now I still feel that I need to chase after other students, but I will never give up.

3. Career-related skills
Three strongest skills: * Self-management 1. My first strongest career related skill is self-management. In terms of Barlow’s theory, “Self-management can be referred to as the individual’s ability to manage the symptoms, treatment, physical and psychosocial consequences and life style changes inherent in living with a chronic condition. Efficacious self-management encompasses ability to monitor one’s condition and to effect the cognitive, behavioural and emotional responses necessary to maintain a satisfactory quality of life. Thus, a dynamic and continuous process of self-regulation is established. ”(Barlow JH. vol. 15. 2001. p. 545–58) When l got education from high school, there were many different options of extra learning method that you can choose, and l prefer to let teacher guide me and then I study by myself for more depth and details, in which way I formed the way to manage myself. Although there are also many tasks that not fit my taste, but I would adjust my emotion to overcome it. Because as for me, I always believe people can do a better job when they are willing to do and feel happy to do that. Although that is a very basic way of self-management, I still feel pleased that I can handle my mood well.

* Adaptability The second career related skill that I am good at is adaptability. Which refers to the ability to get used to different environment (Pulakos et al, 2000), I got this skills since I was young. Even I grow up, I can adapt to different environment very quick and live lively. As for me, this is a skill that would be very meaningful when I begin my career, because I can be familiar with the organizational culture very fast. Moreover, since organizations are operated in a changing condition, everything may change frequently, a strong adaptability skill can help me to adapt to these diverse environment as soon as possible, so as to get a higher performance and stand out easily. * Team working
Although I prefer not to work in teams all the time, my experience on my course and in part-time work has made me more aware of team processes and how I best contribute. Career paths in which I would have some flexibility in how I achieve agreed outputs would probably suit me best as well as those in which I was not always working in teams or with constant supervision e.g. consultancy work or self-employment. However, by working together, I found it meaningful to share each person’s mind during a group people. I can get more useful information by working as team and I can make more friends as well. Which can be a good way to fulfil my spirit and life.
Three skills needing improvement: * Manage time efficiency

During my study period, I recognized I have a very bad habit that I like to leave my work to the last minute. As a result, I cannot make a very good project and tend to get very low marks because I need to finish it extremely hush. It happened a lot so I decide to overcome it. However, I failed again and again. It makes me feel upset and want to change that bad habit desperately. It seems that I could do better it a have more time to preview and review. Referred to Abraham Harold Maslow’s theory who is an American psychology professor. He pointed out the importance of matching time management with people’s needs, differentiating them, and setting time limits on getting each thing done so that you do not bother to other essential areas of your life. As long as the efficient use of time helps us meet higher goals of fulfilment, spirituality and well being, we regard it as helpful. * Communication skills
The second skill that I have to improve is my communication skills. As a international student, I found it is difficult for me to communicate with others freely. At first, I would like to have a try but I tend to make lots of mistakes which make me feel embarrassed and ashamed. Then I do not want to speak and want to stay alone. As a result, I could not improve my communication ability. However, communication is extremely crucial in our day to day life, effective communication can not only helps you to express your feeling precisely, but also make sure your audience can easily get right information from you. It is also extremely vital in the working place, as people are always tend to work together and to cooperate successfully needs communication. For purpose to improve my communication skills, I need to become confident that I can make worthwhile contribution to my words. Then, I need to practice to make it be more familiar and frequent to me. In addition, I have learned that both eye contact and body languages can help me to communicate well. Combining those methods and practice every time, I believe I will overcome it soon. * Budgeting
The third career related skills that I want to improve is my budgeting skills. As for me, I always failed to manage my resources when I have plenty of them, I would consume them very fast in the beginning and become limited at last. For instance, I always got money from my parents in the beginning of the month. I feel like I can do what I want with that money, so I go to restaurant rather than cook at home. As a consequence, at the last day of that month, I almost cannot afford myself to cook at home. Because of that, I could not use my money efficiently and often waste it. It makes me feel embarrassed and upset. I determined to make budget every month and stick to it precisely. Budgeting skills refer to as “a quantified financial plan for a forthcoming accounting period”.( Sullivan, Arthur; Steven M. Sheffrin (2003),p502) This enquired people to make budget efficiency and stick to it precisely . In order to improve my budget skills, I would make schedule plan monthly step by step and stick to it strictly, I would also ask my friends to be my supervisor to help me it I want to give up. Firstly, I would budget my money as it relate to my daily life. Secondly, I would budget my time to do things efficiency. Last but not least, I will learn how to budget my career to make a plan of my future. What I want is that by the end of this semester, I am able to live a healthy and balanced life. Conclusion:
In conclusion, I learned a lot academic skills and career related skills by taking the PDP course. My strongest academic skills are note-making, referencing and information skills. Those academic skills that I need to develop are learning skills, academic writing skills and presentation skills. My strongest career related skills are self-management, manage time efficiency and adaptability skills, the career related skills that I still need to improve are team-working skills, professional quality and budgeting skills. As my ideal job is to be a professional marketer, I need to overcome those bad habits I have referred above and manage myself first, budget my time and money to allocate it to the right place. No matter what occasion I face to, I need to learn to adapt to it in my future time. Furthermore, I need to focus more on team-working and how to build a positive relationship with my partners. At last, I will keep study in my entire life to gain more knowledge which can be helpful to my career.

Miss Brill

...In "Miss Brill," Katherine Mansfield portrays a lonely and sensitive woman who finds Sundays very enjoyable and comforting. She tends to go out to the park on those particular days and observe all of the people out there. She’s very interested in the lives of others and enjoys being part of their lives for only moments long just by eavesdropping on their conversations or arguments. This could be due to the possibility of her life being dull and lacking excitement. She tends to temporarily escape her realities by drifting off and joining the realities of other individuals. In order for us to really understand Miss Brill we need to look her closely as a character. Miss Brill is portrayed as an elderly woman whom is happy and satisfied with her life. On Sundays she enjoys taking walks in the park where she watches and observes other people and momentarily takes a step and participates in their lives. Of the title the character, Miss Brill, Mansfield tell us, “Only two people shared her “special” seat a fine old man in a velvet coat, his hands clasped over a huge carved walking- stick, and a big old woman, sitting upright, with a roll of knitting on her embroidered apron.” (72). She refers to a special seat in the park where she always sits to observe every detail, every move that people does, pretending that is part of the play. When Miss Brill was in the park she said she felt as if she and everyone else were all part of a “play”. She also likes to listen in on the conversations...

Miss Usa

...The American Dream Studs Terkel’s “Miss USA” interview of a young Emma Knight portrays the reality of the “American Dream”. Through Emma Knight, Terkel describes the life of a beauty queen using irony and pessimism. With Emma Knight’s negative self image, she projects herself as being unsuitable for the beauty queen pageant as she states, “NO, uh-uh, never, never, never. I’ll lose, how humiliating.” However, she enters and ironically goes on to win the Miss USA pageant. Terkel continues to express the irony of Knight by including her thoughts after the second night saying, “I thought: This will soon be over, get on a plane tomorrow, and no one will be the wiser. Except that my name got called as one of the fifteen.” Still showing the lack of confidence the young contestant displays her ability to fit in or belong in the world of pageantry. Terkel also utilizes a pessimistic tone in addition to the irony expressed throughout the interview of Emma Knight. In the interview Knight says “If I could put that banner and crown on that lamp, I swear to God ten men would come in and ask it for a date.” Therefore, implying that only the crown and banner makes a woman appealing. Another depiction of pessimism illustrated is her statement in the beginning of the interview saying, “It’s mostly what’s known as t and a, tits and ass. No talent.” implying that the pageants are mostly for demoralizing the women in it. Emma Knight’s tone throughout the story of the American Dream...

Little Miss Sunshine

...Morgan Cross Final Project Spivey April 28, 2014 Little Miss Sunshine Movies are very beneficial in understanding sociology. Films are a mirror image of society and they perceive the social and family movements during a lifetime. Little Miss Sunshine, released in 2006 and written by Mark Arndt, is a startling and revealing comedy about a bizarre family in New Mexico. This movie shows signs of deviance in assorted ways from drug abuse, suicide, and sexuality with signs of social interaction. Social interaction is how we act toward and react to other people around us. Deviance is traits or behaviors that violate society’s expected rules or norms. Olive, the little girl in the Hoover family, has been nominated to compete in the Little Miss Sunshine Pageant in California. If she wants to participate in the pageant, the whole family must travel together to California. The experiences and life lessons that they have are out of the ordinary and shocking. The viewer sees the grandfather locking himself in the bathroom doing drugs. Drugs are deviant because they are illegal. The viewer might look at the grandfather badly because in real life people doing drugs are shunned. This is a way of social construction. On the way to California, they stop at a hotel for the night where the grandfather dies in his sleep after taking the drugs. The family retrieved his dead body from the hospital morgue to take with them to get to the pageant in time. Common sense says this is a criminal act because...

Estella acts like a cold and heartless woman, she remains true to her upbringing and the reality of her being heartless and incapable of love. Which hurts Pip even more, as he can not stop loving her but she does not love him back. She plays as she grows from a child to a woman toying with many suitors along the way, but never as detrimental as she did Pip. She claims that she treats Pip the best out of all other suitors, "Do you want me then," said Estella, turning with a fixed and serious, if not angry, look, "to deceive and entrap you?" (Dickens 312). Truthfully she acts under Havisham's revenge ideas but she does nothing to stop this and carries these actions through with no emotion....

The movie features an array of characters all with their own internal issues and it is evident of the disfunctionality of this family very early on in the script and also the movie. While the movie is filled with many negative events, in the end the family is brought together and it did bring a tear to my eye as this past week was in fact the first time I have ever seen this movie. Compare Little Miss Sunshine and Juno

...Little Miss Sunshine directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valarie Faris, is a family drama about a young girl wanting to go after her dream. Along the way, family members go through conflicts that change him or her and help them grow and mature as a character. Jason Reitman, the director of Juno, also brings up this issue, where the main character goes through a series of conflicts that ‘forces’ her to mature. Both these films show the representation of family and youth and the theme of maturing by the use of language and cinematic conventions. Both these films show two protagonists affected by the issue of having to grow up early and family support. Throughout a person’s life, they will go through changes that will help them mature and grow as a person. Young Olive in Little Miss Sunshine realises that her dream of being a beauty pageant winner is out of her reach but soon realises winning doesn’t matter and overcomes her loss. Similarly, Juno is faced with being pregnant which is unplanned but she is almost forced to deal with it. She decides to give the baby up for adoption, the same as Olive is giving up her dream. Each film uses a variety of cinematic conventions to bring forward the specific issues. For example, in Little Miss Sunshine, several scenes use camera angles such as a close up of Olive with her family blurred out in the background, symbolising that she feels alone and separated yet is determined for them to be an ideal ‘happy’ family, this helps position the viewers...

I hope, Sir Percival, you don't do me the injustice to suppose that I distrust you," she said quickly. "Certainly not, Miss Halcombe. I make my proposal purely as an act of attention to YOU. Will you excuse my obstinacy if I still venture to press it?" He walked to the writing-table as he spoke, drew a chair to it, and opened the paper case. "Let me beg you to write the note," he said, "as a favour to ME. It need not occupy you more than a few minutes. You have only to ask Mrs. Catherick two questions. First, if her daughter was placed in the Asylum with her knowledge and approval. Secondly, if the share I took in the matter was such as to merit the expression of her gratitude towards myself? Mr. Gilmore's mind is at ease on this unpleasant subject, and your mind is at ease—pray set my mind at ease also by writing the note." "You oblige me to grant your request, Sir Percival, when I would much rather refuse it." With those words Miss Halcombe rose from her place and went to the writing-table.
