Mission Statement

...take concrete actions as needed to ensure success ([Thompson & Strickland (1999)]). The importance of mission statements to the effective strategic management of business organisations is well documented in the literature. A mission statement is a general expression of the overriding purpose of an organisation that, ideally, is in line with the values and expectations of major stakeholders. Mission statements are often regarded as ‘enduring statements of purpose that distinguish one business firm from others’. Some theorists regard the organisation's mission as a ‘cultural glue’ which enables it to function as a collective unit. This ‘cultural glue’ consists of strong norms and values that influence the way in which people behave, how they work together and how they pursue the goals of the organisation ( [Campbell & Yeung (1991a)]). A well-designed mission statement is essential for formulating, implementing, and evaluating business strategy ( [David (2001)]). The role of the mission statement in the strategic management of business firms has not been sufficiently highlighted in the research literature. As [Campbell & Yeung (1991a)] note, regarding the mission statement ‘there is little research into its nature and importance’. Since this refers to the management literature generally, it is not surprising that minimal attention has been paid to the role of mission statements in the strategic management of tourism and hospitality organisations. A major objective of this paper...

...Arrian Ureta Professor: James Bridges September 15, 2013 Mission and Vision Statement Analysis Paper Example 1: Salvation Army URL: http://www.use.salvationarmy.org/use/www_usn20.nsf/vw-sublinks/F7522AC461DED52F8825770B0056535B Mission Statement: “The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination”. Analysis: Salvation Army’s vision and mission statements are one in the same and seem to lack length, direction, and meaning. Their published mission statement is not what one would expect from a nonprofit organization. It fails to address some of the areas since much of the organization's existence is tied up in this purpose; it is critical for the people to carefully craft the statements that shape it. Each one will be used both internally and externally as a reminder of the organization's rationale, and together they will be used to make important decisions about the organization. It lacks of the mission statement checklist test, the activities and services was not provided. Revised Mission Statement: “ Salvation Army is committed to serving the whole person, body, mind and spirit, with integrity and respect, using creative solutions to positively transform lives. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human...

Mission Statements

...Criteria of a Good Mission Statement Changing the mission or creating an organization’s first mission statement is a process of gathering ideas and suggestions for the mission and honing them into a short, sharply focused phrase that meets specific criteria. An effective mission statement clearly defines who the customer is and what services and products the business intends to provide. It also serves as a guide for day-to-day operations and as the foundation for future decision-making. The following are criteria for a good mission statement: The Mission Statement is Focuses on Satisfying Customer Needs A mission statement should focused on satisfying customer needs rather than being focused on the product. Products and technologies eventually become outdated, but basic market needs may last forever. A market-oriented mission statement defines the business in terms of satisfying basic customer needs. For examples refer to the following “Market-Oriented Business Definitions” table. (Kotler p.49) The Mission Statement Tells “Who” Our Customers are. (Thompson Strickland, p.30) Who is being satisfied? A company should define the type of customers it wishes to serve. Which customer groups it is targeting. Mission Statement

...stages of building an organization, mission statements are usually one of the first tasks to be completed by founding members. This is because the mission statement is the backbone of the organization. Mission statements lay out the organization’s reason for existence. In laying out the purpose for the organization, it gives the different divisions of the organization an overall goal to meet when they set individual goals and engage in decision making. Also, the mission statement communicates the reason for the organizations existence for all interested parties, both internally and externally. This essay explores why mission statements are important by analyzing the different reasons the mission statement plays such an important role. Just as the sounds of many instruments work in harmony to make a song, there are many moving parts that work together in organizations to reach goals. In music, timing helps keep all the “parts” moving together to make a synchronized piece. In business, the mission statement sets the tone by which all the “parts” work to reach a goal. The mission statement states what the company does, how it does it, and what the company would like to achieve. The mission statement defines the purpose of the organization, aligns organizational efforts, and acts as a means of communication both internally and externally. All decisions made in an organization support the purpose set forth by the mission statement. If decisions are made that stray from...

Mission Statement

...Mission statements are statements made by organizations to describe their purpose or reason for being. Under INC 500 Companies, there were a plethora of well formulated mission statements along with poorly formulated ones. One company whose statement did not reach expectations was uSight. Their mission stated, “Our goal is to provide the best products with the greatest service possible.” There are many flaws in this statement starting with the lack of information. uSight does not reveal who their customers are, what products they are selling, or what their basic beliefs or values are. They could be selling automobiles, computers, or even hair products, but the customer would never know from their simply stated goals. It is imperative that the company shares with the public what major products or services they are providing and which kind of customer would benefit from their help. If a mission statement is too vague it doesn’t truly represent what a certain company, like uSight, is all about. Another company, on the other hand, had an excellent mission statement under the INC 500 Company list known as Portage Environmental. Their mission statement stated, “At Portage we provide competent, responsive, and cost-effective services to customers in federal, state, tribal, and local governments, and private industry…” They provided the customers with a descriptive example of their services and to whom and where they are provided. Included in their statement is their attitude towards...

Vision statement is for a company to achieve and accomplish the desired targets of the business. A good vision statement provides structure for the daily operation of the company. The two must important part of a vision statement is what the company wants for the future and it must have excitement and motivation. "Use the company culture description for more details on the goals and direction of the business." Vision statements are future-based and are meant to give inspiration and direction to the employees of the company, not anyone outside the company. Vision statements are formal and can change over time. As a company grows, its objectives and goals most likely will change. Vision statements need to be restructured as needed to compliment the change as goals are on target and met. A couple of questions you might need to ask yourself when writing your vision statement includes the following, what problem does your company want to solve? What does your company wish to achieve? Who is your target consumer, and what do you want to do for them business wise? Vision statements should provide a sense of direction and enlarge...
