...Quarterly Spring 2001: Volume 5, Issue 1 Assessing the Effectiveness of ProblemBased Learning in Higher Education: Lessons from the Literature Claire H. Major, University of Alabama Betsy Palmer, University of Iowa Major is an assistant professor of higher education administration. <cmajor@bamaed.ua.edu>. Palmer is an assistant professor in the Counseling, Rehabilitation and Student Development department <betsypalmer@uiowa.edu>. Abstract ProblemBased Learning (PBL) is an innovative educational approach that is gaining prominence in higher education. A review of the literature of PBL outcomes summarizes, across multiple studies, the positive effects of problembased learning. Since PBL brings with it unique challenges to traditional assessment, however, this study suggests alternative approaches. Alternative assessment may provide additional insight into the effectiveness of PBL and other alternative pedagogies. Introduction Traditional instruction, such as the typical lecturebased session that developed before textbooks were massproduced, often involves delivering as much information as possible as quickly as possible. The lecture method was one of the most effective and efficient ways to disseminate information and has often been used for this end. Because many faculty members are poor lecturers, and because students are often poor participants in the lecture, this type of instruction has often allowed students to be passive...

...UST Global, India: delivering software service solutions Balakrishnan Menon Balakrishnan Menon is a Professor in the DC School of Management and Technology, Idukki, India and Research Scholar in the School of Management Studies, Karpagam University, Coimbatore, India. 1. Introduction When the founder Chairman of US Technology Private Ltd (UST) Late Mr G. A Menon wanted to set up a software company in Trivandrum, the capital city of the communist party dominated state of Kerala in the year 1999, many people close to him warned that he was setting himself up for failure. The state of Kerala was, in those days, labeled as anti-investment and non-conducive to new entrepreneurial ventures, as it was dominated by a work force, controlled by militant trade unionism with a vested interest to keep their flocks together with age-old dogmas and philosophies. However, Mr Menon went ahead with his plan and set up the company in Trivandrum, as he was keen to do something for his home state, even when the top echelon in the Secretariat (head quarters of the state administration machinery) discouraged him. In subsequent years, UST became the largest software exporter from the state of Kerala, to USA and other countries. UST is a fully-owned subsidiary of California-based US Technology Resources LLC. Established on September 1, 1999 with barely 14 employees, the company was set up, as a 100 per cent Export Oriented Unit, to export software services and solutions, in Techno Park, Trivandrum...

...The Role of Translators-Interpreters in Contemporary Society in the US and in Europe: Luxury or Necessity? Dr. Eduardo González University of Nebraska at Kearney Judging by appearances, the US has everything it needs in terms of meeting present-day requirements for language services in all spheres of modern life. There are immigrants from everywhere, millions of bilingual or polyglot people, excellent universities and colleges and so forth. However, the results as to having qualified translators and interpreters fall quite far from the possibilities. This work will attempt to give a general view of the problem and a brief analysis of possible solutions. The Past First England, then the US, have been for at least the last three centuries the most powerful countries in the world. England had a very early Industrial Revolution and its development of machines and ships led to its vast overseas empire. Even during the centuries when Spain was the most powerful nation and its ships traveled the entire world, its war crafts and equipments could not match the British fleet and armies. For a while there was France, with its beautiful Revolution for liberty, equality and fraternity, spreading the power of the bourgeoisie all over Europe. Then arose Napoleon, the Revolution’s emperor, trying to conquer new lands and colonies for France. In the long run, he was no match for the British power either. His ships were blockaded and destroyed at sea and his weary armies were finally crushed at...

For a business that’s just five years old that’s quite an achievement; for one that has yet to make a single penny in profits, it’s unheard of. But then Amazon.com is more than just a business; it’s a business phenomenon. Launched as a website in June 1995, by the beginning of 1999 Amazon.com Inc. had a market capitalization of $6 billion, by August 1999 it had jumped to $20 billion. Amazon’s value can vary by several billion depending on stock market sentiment. Founder Jeff Bezos has promoted Amazon.com to the point where it is now synonymous with ecommerce...

Thank you, in every way possible 2160-CUTS PROLOGUE July 17, 1996 Maria methodically unpacks her bag and sets the contents down on the salty sand of La Jolla Shores. Everything she needs is placed within reach; a blanket is laid down without a wrinkle, a large towel is placed by the blanket, and a pink bottle of sunscreen is ready to be applied. She even has a small cooler with her, packed with snacks in case we get hungry. Also from the bag she pulls out a contact lens case and a bottle of generic saline solution. With dexterity, she pinches the lenses out of each eye and seals them in a pink plastic container. After putting the case back, she produces a pair of thick glasses and props them on the bridge of her little nose. The ritual surprises me because I had no idea she needed glasses. “It’s nice, there’s not too many people here today,” she says, looking down the stretch of...
