...Introduction American culture, being traditionally perceived as quite liberal and democratic, is in fact paralyzed by the overwhelming power of stereotypes which shape the current image of culture at large and its industries, including music, in particular. Even the most innovative and advanced movements’ turn to be submitted to the canons of the ideology that dominates in American culture. Unfortunately, such a situation does not contribute to the development of really free, liberal and focused on spiritual, moral and intellectual progress of the consumers of the culture. Probably one of the most interesting, new and, unfortunately, typical example of the domination of stereotypes in American culture is the development of female black rap music, which has become particularly intensive in 1980s and is still quite dynamically developing. At first glance black female rap music should be free from traditional stereotypes, it should be innovative and contributing to black female emancipation and increasing the role of black females in the society at large but, in actuality, the situation is absolutely different. Despite the fact that many female rappers pretend to be unique at developing the new image of a free and independent black female, it turns to be that practically all of them, or at least the most popular of them, are ideologically dependent on the male dominance in proper and figurative sense of this word. It means that as a rule black female rappers tend to create an...

Cupp is the author of "Losing Our Religion: The Liberal Media's Attack on Christianity," co-author of "Why You're Wrong About the Right," a columnist at the New York Daily News and a political commentator for Glenn Beck's The Blaze. The opinions expressed in this commentary are hers. Updated 4:09 PM ET, Tue February 3, 2015 (CNN)As the world now knows, the star of the Super Bowl was not Tom Brady or Russell Wilson. It wasn't Katy Perry or Missy Elliot. It was the Left Shark. His onstage dance during the halftime show has earned him global acclaim and, I must say, some unfair scrutiny for his seeming missteps. But neither the general public nor the media seem to appreciate just how much work goes into an interpretive, character-based dance such as the one Left Shark performed last night, and how easy it is, if you are committed to your craft, to lose yourself in the moment. Allow me to enlighten you. As a former ballerina, classically trained at the School of the Boston Ballet, I can assure you that Left Shark -- if he is the student of dance I suspect him to be -- trained for months to get inside the head of his character. Literally. Who is Left Shark? he probably asked himself. And why must he dance? What is his relationship to Right Shark? Are they lovers? Enemies? Do they share custody of a boy shark who's starting to ask questions about his parents' separation, for example? This is what true dancers -- or danseurs -- do. As Patrick Swayze's character said in...

...beliefs on social and cultural issues such motherhood, the education levels of single women and illegal immigration through the leading character by the name of Marietta Greer, but is referred to as Missy. Missy is a young woman who does not want to live her adult life “barefoot and pregnant” like the other women in Pittman County in rural Kentucky. As Missy enters her adult life she quits her job at the hospital performing platelet counts to purchase a minimalistic car and leave her dearest mother and ghost town to create and shape a fulfilling life. Along the way she is put through real life situations that test her limits. Through these trials and tribulations, Kingsolver is able to expose her views through the wild situations that Missy is thrown into. Kingsolver is unique and purposeful in all of her novels. She writes sequentially with the time period and uses brilliant writing techniques and pays close attention to detail. Although, Kingsolver’s official site says that the purpose of “The Bean Trees” was not to describe her personal beliefs, but it is quite obvious she used issues from 1980 to...

...Michael J. Piperato English 122-30 Fall 2014 Essay #2 A home only exists as a home when the inhabitant makes a connection with that place. This connection is not the same for everyone. Some will feel a bond with brick and mortar while others find solace amongst the tall grass and aging trees. This is the beauty of a home, it is not the same for everyone, but perfect for the one person that matters. This link between place and person is bound by differing elements such as the tranquility of the landscape, energy of the environment, relationship with the animals as well as the community surrounding it. If you were to describe an ideal home, you’d likely find peacefulness and serenity to be apt adjectives. After a long day of work or school, it’s important to be able to have a place to relax and unwind. For some, this place of calmness is found “amongst the wet grasses and wild barley-covered meadows” (Rogers 334). A person who calls the wild their home counts down the hours until they can bask in nature’s glory. For others, their sanctuary is “in the inner city” (Clifton 324). These people find peace where many would see anything but. They’ve grown so accustomed to the lights and sounds, silence is deafening. Neither is right nor wrong but a manner of preference. While some look for peace as they rest their head, others seek a dwelling that rejuvenates them as they rise. These type of people seek a place with revitalizing energy, an area that “radiates purity” and...

...Spunk Kenny Leon’s True Color Theatre Company’s production of Spunk: Three Tales by Zora Neale Hurston at the 14th Street Playhouse on September 25, 2013, presented the audience with a very culturally embellished version of Hurston’s original three tales: “Sweat,” “Story in Harlem Slang,” and “The Gilded Six Bits.” Zora Neale Hurston strived to portray the reality of life as an African American in the early 1900s through native dialect in her short stories and novels. Her most notable production, Their Eyes Were Watching God, is a prime example of her effort to illustrate the life of the everyday Negro in search of a better life. Each of the short stories portrays a different, yet comparable view on African American culture in separate areas of the United States. Director Hilda Willis depicts this play, adapted by George C. Wolfe, in the most literal variation of Hurston’s original stories; the actors from True Colors Theatre Company perform the short stories verbatim. This production is energized with selections of blues music to help the audience feel the attitude of the era in which the play occurs. Wolfe’s adaptation of Hurston’s Spunk infused the original three short stories with delineative and characteristic blues music, highlighting the mood during the era of the Harlem Renaissance and Black Migration. “Sweat” tells the story of a woman named Delia who suffers in an abusive relationship with her husband, Sykes. Her husband tries multiple methods of coercing Delia to...

...for their efforts. I think the title in itself represents a sense of dread and uneasiness surrounding the family. Each of the characters in this film, Zeke, Mammie, Missy, Pappy, Chick, Hot Shot and the children exhibit all the stereotypes that are associated with Blacks: always dancing, grinning, conning, goofing off and lacking commitment. Zeke, the slacker, is given the task to take the crop to market and is accompanied by his younger, hardworking brother. A pretty woman, Chick, cons him into gambling and when he losses all the money for the crop that his family has worked hard for, a fight ensues and his younger brother, an innocent bystander, is shot and dies on the way home. Zeke is changed emotionally by the death of his brother. He sees the light and God calls him to go and tell the people to get on board or die and go to hell. This is ironic because Zeke’s brother in the opening scene is the one reading the Bible with Pappy. Zeke and his family hold travelling revivals to save the souls of the lost. Chick is one of those lost souls. However, Zeke seems to be hypnotized by Chick and he runs off with her leaving his finance, Missy behind. At the end of the movie, Chick is killed after she runs off with her old flame Hot Shot; Hot Shot is killed by Zeke; Zeke returns to his family where Missy is waiting for him. I find this plot very similar to non-white movie plots that surround an impoverished white family. For instance, this movie is similar to the...

The line has been promoted via mobile advertising, online, and with an upcoming face-to-face event in Miami. The focus of the campaign is the mobile effort, which is seen as an inexpensive and yet potentially wide-reaching marketing strategy. This is especially important for adidas, as their advertising budget is only about 2/3rds the size of their greatest competitor in this segment, Nike. The determination about how to proceed with the launch in the U.S. revolves around the benefits and limitations of mobile media, including the technological limitations and social considerations. The suggested strategy for adidas is to maintain its strong mobile presence, supported by online content and tie-ins, but to supplement this approach with a limited infusion of “traditional” advertising. The goal of this hybrid strategy is to advertise via a widespread and tested mainstream medium the existence and benefits of the mobile marketing...

...Female Athletes Arise In 2012 Gender equality in the Olympics has been a common debate for years. The main argument from many is that women are always given the “short end of the stick” with little media attention compared to the men. Men are always given more clock time, mentions, and descriptions then women (Billings, 2008). This common trend has caused women in sports to falter, but in the 2012 London Olympic games female athleticism has seen a turn around and is now in the limelight. The London games have been dubbed “Year of the Women,” thus celebrating women in sports and giving them their own chance to shine. These award-winning female athletes are breaking down gender barriers and providing a sense of hope, inspiration, and confidence to not only female athletes but also women in general. Women’s athletics in the Olympics has been on the rise for years. Females were first allowed to participate in the 1900 Paris Olympics. From this point on, the number of athletes and events that women were allowed to participate in has continued to grow. In 2004, 40% of all the athletes were female. Since then, this number has increased to 42% in Beijing and 45% in the 2012 London games (IOC, 2008 & Haven, 2012). These results clearly show that female athletics has grown and is continuing to grow and become more popular. Reports show that for the first time in history the United States, whom is known to be an athletic powerhouse of male athletes, has sent more women...

Not to mention that Americans are taking more and more extended vacations each year. According to Global Industry Analysis, “swimwear and beachwear are projected to exceed $17.6 billion by the year 2015.” However, swimwear is one of the toughest items to sell. However, I have created a retail store that specializes in high quality fabrics and focus on customers having a pleasurable shopping experience. According to Online Resource Directory, many women dread shopping for swimsuits. In order to combat the negative feelings that women have against swimsuits, my retail store expertise will be in quality and fit. I designed a retail store called Blue Jays that will drastically help to change women opinions about swimwear. Blue Jays will sell swimwear that flaunts a women’s figure in a flattering way. Blue Jays main goal of its store is to sell garments of superior quality and to make sure consumers leave satisfied. Sourcing from great manufactures who meet our company standards will help achieve our first goal. Our company only sells swimsuits made from lycra, spandex, and tricot. The tricot fabric helps our swimwear to be lightweight, soft, durable, and shrink resistant. It’s also a fabric that wholes it shape very well. The lycra...
