...Admissions Procedures Requirements At MIT, a regular graduate student is one who is registered for a program of advanced study and research leading to a post-baccalaureate degree. A regular graduate student may concurrently hold an appointment as a research assistant, teaching assistant, or instructor. To be admitted as a regular graduate student, an applicant must have earned a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a college, university, or technical school of acceptable standing. Students in their final year of undergraduate study may be admitted on the condition that their bachelor’s degrees are awarded before they enroll at MIT. Applicants are evaluated by the individual department in which they intend to register on the basis of their prior performance and professional promise, as evidenced by their academic records, letters of evaluation from individuals familiar with their capabilities, and any other pertinent data they submit. While high academic achievement does not guarantee admission, MIT expects such achievement or other persuasive evidence of professional promise. Specific admission requirements vary by department; please consult the catalogue and department or program website for the requirements of individual departments. In general, most departments require significant work in mathematics and the physical sciences in addition to preparation in a specific field of interest, but some admit students with as little as one year each of college-level mathematics...

...Information has become increasingly valuable, especially with the invention of the internet and the computer. The early hackers from MIT, Stanford, and the Homebrew computer club all held that information should be open to everyone. Specifically, things such as codes or software are intended to be freely shared between all who would like to utilize it. Despite the growing prices and security of information, there was one man that still stood for the hacker ethic, as described in Levy’s Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution. His name was Richard Stallman and he fought to protect the freedom to modify, copy, and redistribute information, which is perhaps why Levy referred to Stallman as one of “the last true hackers” (Levy, pg. 437). Stallman maintained the hacker ethic and strongly valued the free sharing of information. As the hacker ethic has continued to erode over time, remnants of the ethical code remain today due in part to Stallman’s efforts, a commendable feat. Early Life Born in 1953, Richard Matthew Stallman was fascinated with math when growing up in Manhattan, easily teaching himself calculus at a young age (Isaacson, pg. 370). Even from a relatively young age, Stallman was strong willed and very opinionated. In...

He had a profound interest in human behavior and began his research on the decision-making as early as his freshmen year in college. He attended Columbia University to earn his MBA degree and attended The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to earn to earn a Ph.D in cognitive psychology. He does present an authority in the subject area, having founded the Center for Advanced Hindsight at Duke and participating in giving TED Talks to raise audience’s awareness of the subconscious forces that influence human decision-making. ...Zakaria Hafizi Suki 1.1Introduction Magnetic induction tomography (MIT) is a new non-contacting technique for visualization of the electrical impedance distribution inside a media. In any tomography system, the image is reconstructed using image reconstruction algorithm which requires sensitivity maps. There are three methods of acquiring sensitivity maps; finite element technique, analytically or experimentally. During reconstruction both the forward solution and the Jacobian matrix need to be calculated.[1] 1.2 Overview For industrial tomography, the emphasis is usually on high speed data acquisition, rather than resolution. This lends itself to electrical tomography techniques, which although lacking the resolution of x-ray and MRI tomography, are nearly instantaneous. Examples of electrical tomographic imaging methods are Magnetic Induction Tomography (MIT), in which multiple measurements of coupling between magnetic excitation Sensitivity maps reconstruction of Magnetic Induction Tomography real data measurement technique through and sensing coils are used to determine the internal resistivity of an object. ...Question 1) Choose two of the seven traditions of communication theory you feel offer the best approach for theorizing and argue for its relevant contribution to the study of human communication. Explain your choice. Defend your answer. Number your arguments. Sociocultural communication theory: Sociocultural theory conceptualizes communication as a symbolic process that produces and reproduces shared meanings, rituals, and social structures. (Sokolowski R 2000 pg.74) 1) This theory allows us to communicate with all types of groups and share same views and listen to others view’s as well. 2) Social cultural approaches to communication theory address the ways our understanding, meaning, norms, and roles. The Phenomenological Tradition: is one that focused on descriptions of what people experience and how it is that they experience what they experience. One can employ a general phenomenological perspective to elucidate the importance of using methods that capture people's experience of the world without conducting a phenomenological study that focuses on the essence of shared experience. (Sokolowski R 2000 pg.88) 1) This concept comes from the area of philosophy which makes it great for all kinds of theories because each one has a philosophical aspect to it. 2) This makes it easier to share experiences with other and groups we see what each other as gone through. 2. What is a theory? (how do you know one when you get out of bed and trip over one?) What...

...occasion. -Abraham Lincoln, December 1, 1862 As connection speeds increase and the ubiquity of the Internet pervades, digital content reigns. And in this era, free education has never been so accessible. The Web gives lifelong learners the tools to become autodidacts, eschewing exorbitant tuition and joining the ranks of other self-taught great thinkers in history such as Albert Einstein, Alexander Graham Bell, Paul Allen and Ernest Hemingway. “Learning is not a product of schooling but the lifelong attempt to acquire it.” -Albert Einstein 10 years ago in April 2001, Charles M. Vest, the MIT President at the time, announced that the university would make its materials for all its courses freely available on the Internet. This initiative, found at OpenCourseWare, has enabled other teachers and lifelong learners around the world to listen and read what is being taught at MIT. 5 years later, in April 2006, UC Berkeley announced its plan to put complete academic courses on Apple’s iTunes U, beginning what is now one of the biggest collections of recorded classroom lectures in the world. One year later, in...
