...I interviewed three people prior to beginning this class about their opinions of evolutions . I asked my brother Phil, my friend Navdeep and my roommate Janae. Although I was asking them questions about their belief in creationism, I too was curious about the proof of our origin. I always believed in creationism solely due to my upbringing in a Christian household. However I never had the scientific evidence and knowledge to truly be the foundation for my belief. Through this class and interviewing my friends and realizing where I stood in my understanding of creationism, I learned more and more each week to solidify my argument for creationism. Janae, my roommate who was raised in a Christian household and had a firm belief in Jesus Christ as her savior. She said that in the bible when god made the earth in 7 days, the "day " was not referring to the 24 hour period we have today. I could dispute this by saying Hebrew scholars recognize that the intent was to convey six normal days of twenty four hour length. There was an evening and morning. In Exodus 20:11, " For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it." She then answered my next question saying there was no shared ancestor between apes and humans. ...Patriarchy is best defined as control by men. The opposite is matriarchy which means women are in charge and the head of families. Obviously, the culture of the United States and most other countries is patriarchal. Men have the power and control the women. If you don't believe that consider the basics of how our society functions. Women constantly must fight for their rights and sometimes they struggle just to survive without the power and domination of men threatening them. Whether an individual woman wants to conquer patriarchy will come from her desire to be independent and defined outside the context of men. Look to most world leaders to see how powerful patriarchy is. Women are certainly as capable as men to be President of the United States, yet they are not and probably won't be any time soon. Men have been in that role for so long that our country probably does not believe it is possible. Consider who is typically at the head of a company or leaders in local governments. While certainly more women are fulfilling these roles, it is a constant struggle for the ones who are able to achieve that success with men having much more power just by their biological nature. Men have not had to fight for their place in society like women have. It has been an expectation that they will become leaders because that is what patriarchy is about. So, before you read this, you should know that I already asked Mr. McMurtry if I could write my fiction project in an experimental science fiction style and make lots of horrible, malicious, false, and hateful blood libels against the Mormons, and he asked what I had in mind, and I told him that I thought it could be cool to write a story that consisted entirely of a War between Mormons and Scientologists and Atheist Texan Cowboys in the Future, and he said that would be fine. I knew he’d let me do it, as his homosexuality is a well known fact to the student body, and therefore his concomitant openness to avant-guard art and literature and experimentation and stuff like that.
