The Military Draft

The United States has not used the Military Draft since it ended in 1973. Over the last five years, there have been proposals to reinstate the draft. We have had an all volunteer Military for three decades and have endured three conflicts in Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Under the draft twenty years ago the Military services were smaller yet today with the volunteer Military has met their enlistment quota to date. Even with this information, I personally feel that the Military Draft should be reinstated for many reasons. Largely in part that we will ensure to have forces to defend our great country. There is not a lot of support for the draft to be reinstated from the American public. Many feel that it is not right to put their sons and daughter in harms way in Iraq or Afghanistan by drafting them. They actually believe that our all volunteer military can meet recruitment goals and that other countries cannot defeat ours. James Jay Carafano, Ph.D. said that “returning to the draft represents a failure of democracy, not a means to ensure its future” (par. 13). The majority of Congress does not support reinstating the draft and believe that our military services should remain all volunteers. Retired General Robert Scales commented that soldiers that are drafted are more likely to be killed in action than long-service professionals (Time, par. 10). Reinstating the draft now, would cause more young men and women to dodge the draft than ever before. Most people believe that joining the military should be a decision that an individual makes on their own, not something they are forced to do. Louis Caldera, former secretary of the Army said that “attempts to reinstate the draft could tear the nation apart for zero gain—and possible a net degradation in military effectiveness (Time, par. 15). This is the same thought that many Americans have when the discussion of reinstating the draft arises. Although there is large support against reinstating the draft, there is also a great deal of support for reinstating the draft. Some say our freedom is not free and if we do not defend it then we will lose it. Reinstating the draft could help the American people if used properly. All young American should at least join the military for two years so that they may know what it is like to fight for the freedoms that all of us have. This two year commitment would not only train them in a skill that would benefit them in the job market after their military service but give them that pride that soldiers like myself hold dearly. Charles Rangel a congressman from New York stated that “fighting for our country must be fairly shared by all racial and economic groups “(Time, par.3). It would cut unemployment down, teach our young men and women to be responsible for their actions, and instill the discipline to over come life’s challenges. The military life could help many people have more integrity and support each other more during and after service in the military. They would have a more diverse view of the world as they would have traveled to places that if they had not been drafter, would never see. They would see how well we have it as Americans and that with pride, teamwork, and discipline anything can be accomplished. Even the discipline learned could cut down on crime and would make a better society for all of us to live in. Although the majority of Americans do not support reinstating the Military draft, I strongly feel it would help our country. No one wants to die in combat whether they volunteered to serve or they were drafted. You gain a sense of pride in yourself and the American life we live after serving in the military. Our youth can gain discipline and a job skill to benefit them after their service to help them and their families or future families. We could ensure that America remains the biggest and strongest country with the freedoms that we earned from defending our great country.

Jungle

...Zenja Jones Eng101 – Smith 2 Nov 2015 Jungle The most significant thing I’ve read does not come from a book, a magazine, or a blog. It comes from a hip-hop song. The song was made by a Canadian rapper, turned singer, named Aubrey Graham. He is well known as Drake in the music industry. The song I am referring to is called ‘Jungle.’ There is one lyric in particular that caught my attention and stuck with me. The lyric itself personally inspires me to be my best and encourages me to keep moving toward success. The song is fairly new. It was released in February of 2015, along with seventeen other songs, on Drake’s album ‘If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late.’ This is his fourth commercial released album. It was randomly available on iTunes on the thirteenth of February. The album has been very successful, as well as his others. The album debuted as number one on the Canadian Albums Chart and the Billboard 200. Because of ‘If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late,’ Drake became the first rapper to top Billboard’s Artist 100 chart. Jungle has the third most plays out of the whole album. Drake has always been one of my favorite artists to listen to. I feel his music is more relatable than others. Jungle really grabbed ahold of my mind and wedged itself in there, continuously playing even when I’m not listening to the actual song. It loops the same part of the song over and over again when I’m in apposition of giving up. It is a rather emotional song though. The meaning of the...

Deadmau5 vs Daftpunk

...Compare and Contrast Electronic music is getting closer and closer to becoming mainstream everyday, but what does it take to become famous, in this up and coming genre? From the 90’s till present day other then a funky beat you need a gimmick to reach super stardom that’s exactly what Deadmau5 and daft punk both have, and they are legends in Electronic music partly because of it. Joel Zimmerman Aka Deadmau5 pronounced (dead mouse) is a progressive house/ trance producer from Canada. Starting his career in 2006 that is famous not only for his music, but the mouse helmet he wears while preforming. Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter make up the electronic duo Daft Punk from France. They produce House music or by their definition “robot rock” and became popular in the late 90’s. They are also known for wearing helmets designed to make them look like robots. They both share a common gimmick wearing their helmets which I find to be their alter egos. When Joel Zimmerman puts on that mouse head he transforms into Deadmau5 along with Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter once they have their robot costume on they have become Daft Punk. Its what their fans identify them by its their gimmick that people can slap on anything from tee shirts to coffee mugs. It makes them more recognizable and catches people’s attention. Wouldn’t you be more curious if you saw a guy DJing music in a mouse head or a robot costume? Not only do their costumes set them apart from...

Memory

...On the 9th of July my two best friends and I travelled up to London to attend wireless festival. I left my house at 1:30 to meet my friends by 02:00 so we could begin our journey. We were all very excited as you can imagine, the main reason we were going to the festival was because Kanye West was the headline act, we are all huge fans of the artist. From the minute we left to the minute we arrived we sang along to kanye West songs, the journey seemed to fly by. The roads weren’t too busy, we were in London before we knew it. We arrived at the Jury’s inn, this is where we were staying, we took our bags to our room and changed our clothes. After we’d gotten ready we phoned a taxi, we weren’t waiting too long before it came. It took us straight to Finsbury Park, this is where the festival was being held. We couldn’t believe how many people were in one place, every street surrounding the park was packed, the queues were unbelievably long, we had to wait about forty minutes in the queue, they searched our bags and let us in. We were all starving at this point, we went straight to the food vans, we all had a tandoori chicken kebab, it was lovely. Before we knew it Iggy Azalea was on the main stage, we rushed over to watch her, she was so good, then to everyone in the audiences surprise she brought out Rita Ora as a surprise guest, the crowd went nuts, everyone in the crowd was singing along. we knew that this was going to be a good day. After she finished we went to get a drink,...

Personal Narrative: When I Wake Up

...After a while, I finish my homework. Since it’s 10:30 p.m., I’m going to bed. When I wake up, I get ready to go to Nonno’s and Nonna’s for lunch. My nonna has an amazing meal prepared for us and I gobble it all down because it’s so good. After that, I go to the living room and get ready for my nonno to tell me a story. He sits down and gets himself all comfortable. When he’s satisfied with his position, he begins to speak. “Erica,” he starts, “since you’re old enough to handle it, I’m going to tell you a war story, only if it’s okay with you though.” “Yes, I would love to hear one of your war stories!” I exclaim. “Okay, let me begin. My best friend and I were in the same soldier group in the war. We were creeping through the forest when...
