In today’s society modern technology has helped us live longer, healthier, cleaner, and more comfortable lives than our ancestors did. Yet we are all aware of some technologies disadvantages, ranging from the minor frustrations we have with technology gadgets to the thousands of lives lost from automobile accidents. Technology has changed the way we as humans live; it changes our understanding of the way things work and changes the way we interact with one another. In science, our goal is to get further and understand everything there is to understand about our earth and our capabilities with technology. But the way we are viewing technology now these days is making our life more efficient for us. When you look around what do you see? You see certain individuals walking around with a phone up to their ear, holding laptop cases, or just listening to music from their Ipod.
From a Christian perspective, technology must be judged for its value in realizing the good and fulfilling the moral lessons that Jesus taught. When it comes to people, technology is important in providing food, clothing, shelter and supplies. Through technology random helpful people were able to send books to Africa to support a school ran by the Peace Corps by airplanes. Church’s sent much needed food and clothing to Haiti after the earthquake on airplanes and ships. Also many people went to help after hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. People were able to use technology to contact loved ones either by phone or Skype software on their computers. All of this service helps people. With respect to God, technological objects play an important role in helping people know about Him.
Technology creates opportunities to realize the good. For example, communication technologies like the machines that create books, magazines, newspapers, and brochures, as well as radio and television, inform...

...Graduation was in 2003 for my school year and was happy to be out and explore the world. Getting home after graduation I sat down at the computer and checked my email. I could not believe was I was reading about a mobile phone with a camera. I could never imagine that a mobile phone could have a camera. I had a 35mm camera and was just so amazed at how good of a picture came out of that camera. I had never had a cell phone only my older brother and sister had mobile phones. I played with their phones all the time and was just so amazed at how many games it had. The games totaled 5 and was like whoa just blew my mind. I had my camera phone for about three years and was taking pictures at every event until my memory was full and could take no more. I had uploaded my pictures to my computer and then I was off again taking more pictures. I had a decent job and was making little money and had saved up enough money to buy me a RIM Blackberry smart phone which was another whole level from the phone I had. I could sync my email, play games ten times better than on my previous phone. It had a full qwerty keyboard and I was a typing machine and was texting people so fast it wasn’t even funny. I had my RIM Blackberry for about 1 year when I heard news that Google had acquired Android and was going to develop a Google mobile phone. I could not believe what I was reading on Google news, I always follow the RSS feeds from Google News...

...106 1700 The Indians are Coming for America In the essay “While I was Sleeping” by Thomas L. Friedman, he made a very strong argument (figuratively) that the world is becoming flat. After reading this essay, one really has no choice but to agree. The essay was written fairly recently due to the fact that he mentions very current technology in this essay. Mr. Friedman said “I just want to understand why Indians were taking Americans work and why they have become such an important pool for outsourcing Americans work” (626). It is obvious that he is somewhat warning the American culture, young and middle aged. The world really is flat in regards to technology, the economy, and our ever changing cultures. Thomas L. Friedman’s argument in this essay is that the world is flattening. He starts with the setting on a golf course in Bangalore, India. Bangalore is the home of the modern world’s most advanced technology. The author kept comparing his journey to Bangalore, to the journeys of Christopher Columbus. As we all know Christopher Columbus set out to find a more direct way to India and to prove that the world was round. The author of this essay uses the modern world of technology and its recent advances to prove that the world is in fact flat and that everyone needs to be ready to except significant changes to our culture and power as we know it. Through the help of interviews with the CEO of Infosys Technologies Limited, he supports the fact that the people from Indian...

Liking Is for Cowards

...What Hurts Essay The world we are living in has been through so many changes, and now we are living in a world filled with technology. It is not just some inconsiderable change in our everyday life, and it would not be an exaggeration if you said that technology has changed the world. It has dispensed so many new opportunities to the human kind and it is just the beginning of what technology may bring the future. One could argue whether technology has had negative or positive influence on the human kind, and you can ask yourselves whether people are using technology in a meaningful way? Maybe the human race is not clever enough to avoid being seduced by technology. The essay Liking Is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts written by Jonathan Franzen bring some essential subjects into focus. In the beginning of the essay he describes his obsession with his new BlackBerry Bold and why he got rid of the old one. He humanizes his phones and describes his relationship with them as if the phones were actual people. He says: “(…) our technology has become extremely adept at creating products that correspond to our fantasy ideal of an erotic relationship (…)” (p. 8, l. 46) He explains that the ultimate goal of technology is to replace the natural world with a world that is responsive to our wishes. Technology does not ask for anything, we can do what ever we want with it without getting into a big argument as in ‘real’ relationships, and all things considered technology creates a perfect...

...Professor Pilaro English 101 My Reading Response Ellen Degeneres’ essay is speaking thoughtful and honest opinions. I loved how she shared her frustrations with modern living technology, and her funny bathroom run ins with the automatic toilet. She made it clear that she hates what technology has done, and how it affected the world. I guess she seems to have liked the 60’s more than now. I do agree with a few things she mentioned like the certain things they’re coming up with that we don’t need, and how cell phones are ruining people. But from what I've read in her essay she complains a lot. I don’t think that today technology is that bad as she makes it sound. Why not write about the positives and negatives on the advancements in technology? I believe technology has the good side as well. It improved tremendously and is only getting better. I've never heard anybody complain about the innovation nowadays like oh man I hate the new touchscreen ipad I prefer my old computer I used in the 50’s. She also states that modern life requires hardly any physical activity. I don’t think that applies to everyone. A lot of people don’t care about their phones and are active throughout the day. She put to much emphasis on the negativity of modern day technology. The only good thing she said about technology was the ringtone tunes sound better now than they did before. I still enjoyed what she wrote and loved reading her...

It is known as a vehicle with four wheels and it contains an engine and that is used to move from one place to another smoothly and quickly. The cars are one of many very useful transportation methods; it gives the freedom to travel to anywhere and on anytime. In this essay I will compare and contrast this transportation method between the past generation and the present generation. This essay will focus on three key areas – engine, safety and technology. The first area that this essay will consider is about cars engine, the most importance thing in the car is the engine which it is the thing that makes the car move. In the past, the people were just wanted a car to reach them from point A to point B, so the car engine was so simple. For instance, the mechanical engineer Karl Benz created the first car engine which it called (Benz’s engine), the automobile was motorized by a 0.75-hp one-cylinder four-stroke gasoline engine. Furthermore, the speed of car was just 16 km/h (10 mph) (1). Besides, it was not need a lot of energy and it caused lots of pollution. With the technological advances; in current generation the car’s engine is working the basic principle like in the past by air and fuel combustion to create a rotational force and move the car, but the modern cars engine has become more developed. Where it is characterized by more reliable, more efficient and more...

Still, this is connected to a myriad of issues and peculiarities to be considered, and some scientists believe that technological advancement makes such conundrums inevitable (Cavanaugh, 2006). As modern lifestyles become more efficient and more complicated, people seek ways to apply technology to mundane activities in order to simplify these tasks. According to Professor Brian Nejmeh (2012), the acquisition of knowledge needs to be in tandem with current technological trends. One of the spheres having the rifest debates about implementing technologies is education. Among several radical proposals concerning this question was a blanket ban on textbooks in favor of laptops, which resulted in controversy reaching its peak. The general cost of buying a laptop and maintaining it is higher as compared to school textbooks. The digital text combination, inherent in laptops, is still a relatively new and expensive technology (Cavanaugh, 2006)...

...Liking is for cowards. Go for what hurts Jonathan Franzen, an American novelist and essayist, wrote the essay “Liking is for cowards. Go for what hurts” in The New York Times in 2011. Franzen’s essay is mainly about the increasing relationship between humans and technology, where he criticizes the development of the narcissism in the modern time. He writes about how to love and like in real life and in consumer technology. Franzen begins the essay with his own example of his relationship to his old smartphone and his new one. He describes his own addiction to the new Blackberry and he “wanted to keep fondling” the new blackberry even though he didn’t have anybody to reach. He finds safety in the smartphone because it won´t hurt you and it’s always available and writes that the “beloved object asks for nothing and gives everything, instantly, and makes us feel powerful, and doesn’t throw terrible scenes when it’s replaced by an even sexier object.” ll.49-53. Franzen describes therefore his blackberry as a girlfriend. But vanity has become more popular these days and the term “liking “ someone’s picture or status on Facebook is stated as “commercial culture’s substitute for loving” (ll.84-84), and is a superficial way of saying that you “like” the person. Franzen writes that we can form our own lives through the media and make it more interesting for others to see and he blames it because of its increasing narcissism and the fakeness of “liking”. But as I mentioned before, this...

Liking Is for Cowards

...Essay  on  “Liking  is  for  Cowards.  Go  for  What  Hurts” We’re  spending  more  and  more  time  online  and  less  time  out  in  the  real  world.  But  is  modern  technology   really doing us harm? And are we missing out on a lot of important stuff when we hide behind our screens and use a mouse as our mouthpiece? These are some of the important question that arise from reading Jonathan  Franzen’s  essay,    “Liking  is  for  Cowards.  Go  for  What  Hurts” from 2011. The 51-year-old author puts our daily internet routines into perspective and forces us to think critically about what we are doing online. But he beats around the bush for a while before he starts presenting his actual message. He thus starts out sharing a personal experience of getting a new smartphone and uses this as a starting point for voicing his concerns. Jonathan Franzen is aware of the danger of scaring off those young   readers   who   might   be   fed   up   with   older   people   complaining   about   the   youth   of   today,   “Very   probably,  you’re  sick  to  death  of  hearing  social  media  disrespected by cranky 51-year-olds”  (ll.  140-142). He therefore catches this young audience’s   attention   by   comparing   his   relationship   to   his   outdated   smartphone   to   a   relationship   of   romantic   nature.   He   uses   familiar   expressions   like   “trust   issues”,   “accountability  issues”  and  having  “outgrown  the  relationship”. In this...
