Money, happiness
Can money buy happiness? Exploring this question is a chapter in ‘Dance with Chance: Making luck work for you’ by Spyros Makridakis, Robin Hogarth, and Anil Gaba (Landmark). Acknowledging that the question is something that has intrigued philosophers, poets, and pop stars over the years, the authors go on to narrate a study by two psychologists, Ed Diener and Martin Seligman. “They carried out a survey of various groups of people, ranging from the tycoons and heiresses on Forbes magazine’s billionaires list to Calcutta’s pavement dwellers. The respondents were asked to indicate their agreement with the statement, ‘You are satisfied with your life,’ using a scale from 1 (complete disagreement) to 7 (complete agreement), with 4 suggesting a neutral attitude.” If the answer is above 5.8, you are happier than a billionaire, the respondents were informed.
What were the findings? No huge differences in happiness between the different groups, apart from the homeless respondents. The semi-nomadic Massai of Africa may be fractionally less content than the billionaires, but they score higher than a random selection of Swedish people; and the satisfaction rates of Indian slum dwellers are not much worse than an international sample of college students, one learns.
Life satisfaction does not increase once people reach a certain minimum level of income, the authors note. They also cite another study that plotted per capita GDP on the x-axis, and life satisfaction on y-axis. The mapping of international happiness revealed that the average level of satisfaction is higher in richer countries, with some exceptions, such as Indians being more satisfied than Russians despite lower GDP per capita, and communist Cuba seeming to be happier than capitalist Japan.
About Japan, again, it can be interesting to know that the self-reported satisfaction levels have remained constant across three decades (1958-1987), though real income increased fivefold. Likewise, “the London School of Economics professor Richard Layard reports that the percentage of people in Britain and the USA describing themselves as ‘very happy,’ ‘quite happy,’ or ‘not happy at all’ has remained the same for five decades, despite the fact that they were getting steadily richer all this time.”
The chapter wraps up by stating that happiness – like health and longevity, wealth and professional success – is complex to the point of unpredictability. One thing, however, is simple, the authors observe: “As the old Scottish proverb goes, be happy while you’re alive for you will be dead for a long time.”
Thought-provoking read.

Money and Happiness

...Zach Peters PHIL 220 April 10, 2015 Essay 2 Neil Levy’s article goes into depth on the controversial philosophy of money and its effect on happiness. Contrary to popular belief, Levy states that national surveys provide data that suggests money has very little effect on overall happiness. In this essay, I am going to analyze Levy’s article and explain why and how he believes money is of little importance in achieving overall well-being. I am also going to attempt to find correlations between income and happiness that Levy thinks may have significance in answering this philosophical question. My hopes are to find an alternative understanding of these correlations that the author may not have taken into consideration during his research. First, it is important for me to identify the possible scenarios that Levy puts on the y-axis. Happiness, being the underlying measurement, is affected by a variety of factors. Levy believes that in poorer countries, comfort and stress are thresholds that control happiness to a certain extent. The extent is to whether or not they have enough money to achieve the basic needs of life. For example, a roof over your head and enough food to survive. If these basic needs are met, money has little to no effect on their happiness. Along with comfort and stress, he discusses adaption and contentment as important factors that are effected by income. People seem to adapt to rises in the economy but fail to adapt when they experience a fall. During falls...

Money vs. Happiness

...between wealth and happiness presented in texts 1 and 2 In the first text “The Sandra Bullock Trade” David Brooks presents his own subjective attitude towards the topic “money vs. happiness”, and Brooks is convinced that there is little or no connection between being wealthy and being happy. “Marital happiness is far more important than anything else in determining personal well-being” he says, and underpins this with the statement that if you are happily married everything else doesn’t matter, you will be reasonably happy anyway. On the other hand he claims that if you have an unsuccessful marriage you will never be truly happy. He introduces some statistics to backup his opinion showing that the relationship between happiness and income is tenuous after the point where basic necessities have been achieved. “…people are happy in their 20’s, dip in middle age and then, on average, hit peak happiness just after retirement at age 65” According to Brooks and this assertion happiness is based on age rather than on income, and he also mentions that the daily activities most associated with happiness are the ones where you socialize with others. All together he’s of the opinion that happiness does not rely on the fact that you are either wealthy or not. In text 2 the topic is seen in a different way. It’s not seen as an “either money or happiness”-situation but more by the way the money is used. According to studies of consumption people do get happier spending money, but it depends...

Money Cant Buy Happiness

...What Money Can’t Buy. We need it to pay the bills, eat and sleep in our warm homes. Most importantly we need it to survive. Money plays a very important role in everyone’s life across the world. Money can be the most important thing in the world, but many forget that there are many other things that hold value, more than the dollars in your bank account. Still, very astonishing to me how one piece of paper can control the minds of billions of people. How we let it dictate a majority of our life and think that we need it to make us happy. Even though money can buy you all the lavish goods in the world, but it can never buy you happiness, knowledge, good health, love or time. In my personal experience with money, I’ve had the amount of an average American family. Meaning that I wasn’t filthy rich but I wasn’t poor either. The amount that I have is enough to make me happy because I’m not struggling with anything life food and other necessities. I don’t live comfortably, because my idea of comfortable is not having to work, but I still have to pay bills and maintain. But, looking at others who don’t have much money makes me appreciate my life more even if I am not wealthy. Being average isn’t so bad when you still have gratitude. Money can’t buy you happiness and I actually believe that in some ways money can actually negatively consume your life. What I mean by this is, say for instance someone is desperate for money, they will do anything to get their hands on it. That...

Can Money Buy Happiness

...Yesun-Erdene.B Can Money Buy Happiness? We live in a society of shopaholics. This process of shopping and purchasing things that we want is the major part of any economy and a main factor that is developing society; therefore, many people have become more materialistic and give a lot importance to money and chasing it. They think that money can’t buy happiness, however; it can. Moreover, money plays an important role in our lives because it helps us to value things in our lives and it motivates people to work hard to make money to have the things they desire. Money helps us to value things in our lives. We human beings are very greedy and we have endless demands. In order to obtain our demands, some amount of money is necessary because it is difficult to be happy when we don’t have access to the necessities. So, once we have gotten our basic demands, these things could make our lives more valuable even if it’s a little bit. For example, when we are stressed out for some reason we just want to take a break or vacation to somewhere with our family where we can relax and enjoy, but it costs a lot of money and there are many people who can’t afford to go to the vacation. However, one of the human necessities is exactly taking a rest. Thus, people must get some rest sometimes, because it will make them happier and give them more energy to live. Otherwise, people will get depressed easily and stressed out often and it becomes a major health problem. Second...

Money Cannot Buy Happiness

...Money cannot buy happiness Good morning. Today, I’m going to talk to you about how money cannot buy happiness. Happiness. What is happiness? Is buying a new iPod happiness? Or is buying someone’s love for you called happiness? Actually I’m sure if I ask anyone what it is, there is no definite answer. If a girl wanted a Barbie doll for her birthday but instead her mother gives her a soft toy she says she is unhappy and she doesn’t love her. But how can materialistic goods make us happy or sad and decide someone’s love for us? When did money ever start to buy our happiness? Firstly, money isn’t everything. Some people think their lives, love, death, friends, families; time and health all revolve around money. It is this type of thinking that causes one to work like they own someone a living. It is this type of thinking that causes one to lose their loved ones after he or she gets richer. It is this type of thinking that causes one to regret not cherishing anything and only caring about money. Money manipulates us to think it is our lives but our lives are invaluable. Money may mean something to us, but it is not everything. Secondly, doesn’t mean you have money, you are happy. The world’s happiest people are not in Qatar, the richest country in the world, nor are they in Japan, the nation with high life expectancy. Rather a poll done by more than 150,000 has shown that the happiest people are in Latin America. Even with its poor living conditions, the people are still happier...

Can Money B Happiness?

...Money is the currency used all around the world for means of exchange. The majority of society seems to agree that money cannot buy happiness; but does it? People that choose to acquire wealthy lifestyles are often seen as self-centered or greedy. Greed is the natural, intense and selfish desire for something that exists in us all. Every single being on earth possesses some type or form of greed. Naturally we condemn others for having this trait, so I decided to pursue a different perspective. Money itself cannot truly buy happiness. If you think about this in a literal form, it makes sense. No one is actually able to “buy”emotions or feelings with an object. Granted money cannot buy happiness, money is able to buy things that supply a feeling of happiness. Money can buy the ability to give to others. A researcher at Harvard University found that giving to others is boosting people emotionally and physically. I can agree this is accurate because when people serve others they become more happy. Typically, a sense of cheerfulness or optimism is felt after helping someone. Think of a time when you helped your grandparents do something they are no longer able to accomplish. That same feeling is felt when money is donated to special organizations we admire. Celebrities like Beyonce, Taylor Swift and Matthew McConaughey have donated millions of their earnings to different charities and organizations across the world. If these celebrities that are worth more than millions of dollars...

My Relationship with Money and Happiness

...If money doesn’t buy happiness, what does? Many people believe that having more money is going to make them happier in life, but does money really provide true happiness? After reading the passage “Yes, Money can buy happiness,” by John Tierney, explains that people are more often to be happier when they spend money on others rather than spend money on themselves. In my opinion many people believe having more money will make their lives happier and free of all worries. In my life money has provided food, clothing, and shelter our basics needs in life but I came to a conclusion where my satisfactory is not enough. I complain that I need more money and that it will solve all the solution to my problems. But in reality money is never going to be enough to buy my happiness in life, because the more we have the more we need and want. For example, I went shopping to the citadel outlets with my family, less than a few hours I spend about four hundred dollars. I looked at other people and I wish I had more money to spend in order to feel enjoyment and more satisfaction. Then, I look into my partner eyes and say to him, I realize with money you can become selfish, destructive and greedy but on the other hand it can help you discover a world you never knew because we all know money can open the doors to many objects in life. Such as, having the opportunity to explore the world, to have all the materials in life. Furthermore, I do agree that buying does bring happiness to everybody...

Does Money Equal Happiness?

...Does Money Equal Happiness? Many people think money is the key to happiness. Happiness is the state of well-being characterized by emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy, which means happiness is an emotion. An emotion is what you feel.  Emotions can be short lived or long term.  Some emotions, like fear, can come and go.  Long lasting fear usually is undesirable.  Happiness, on the other hand, is an emotion that most people would like to experience over the long term.  People often seek short-term ways to make them feel happy.  But, long-term happiness is a bit more challenging to create.    Money certainly can buy things that can make a person happy...for a while. In today’s world, IPhones, fancy cars, and nice clothes seem to have become a necessity in life. The problem is, soon there is a newer phone or a fancier car.  People can get stuck in a never-ending cycle of trying to buy short-term happiness.  Over a lifespan, purchases meant to provide short-term happiness can result in insufficient money for the necessities of life ultimately resulting in unhappiness.  Money may actually not be necessary in the first place. There are numerous examples where people who have a lot less are happier. If you travel outside of the typical American city you can find that buying happiness with money is not always the case. I got to meet someone who was happy with having less. When my family and me went on a cruise, we had a waiter who was working on his son’s birthday. Not...

Can Money Buy Happiness?

...Can Money Buy Happiness? Benjamin Franklin stated that “Money has never made man happy, nor will it, there is nothing in its nature to produce happiness”. Unlike the past, nowadays, the world has become more materialistic and the statement that money can buy happiness is trending to be obvious. However, there is still debatable about this question “can money buy happiness?” Some people believe that money is the main key in life to be happy while others think that money can never buy happiness. From my point of view, money can buy happiness depending on the purpose of using money like being able to relieve stress, having more experiences and having more time. To begin with, money can enable people to be free from the stress because they would not have to worry about all their bills that they have to pay things in the past, in the present and in the future. In the article “Stress In America: Paying With Our Health,” people who have lower salaries will be less happy than people who have higher salaries (American Psychological Association, 2015, p.4). For example, people will not have to wait until the due date of credit card payment, if they have adequate income to pay this bill. In contrast, people who do not have enough money, they have to figure out what they suppose to do and this situation would lead to further stress. As a result, being free of this problem can make people feel happier. Furthermore, having money let people gaining more experiences because they are able...

The Correlation Between Money And Happiness By Sharon Bogley

...Does money bring us happiness? Sharon Bogley is an author whom writes about science for publications such as The Wall Street Journal and Newsweek. Accordingly to her the correlation between wealth and happiness is very complex. It all depends on the situation that they are in. Bogley believes that once basic needs are met then other stuff such as social relationships and satisfaction at work become more important in life. Bogley provides many examples of different situations in her passage, “Money and Happiness” for instance; economists believe that more money you have, the happier you must be. The question then arises is the economist bias? Since his or her job is revolved around the effect and worth of money, it may influence his views between the relationship of money and happiness. This example is very situational because he or she is obviously going to favor money equals happiness for the reason that without the presence of money his or her job is meaningless....

The Great Gatsby Quotes About Money And Happiness

...Can Money Affect Your Happiness? “It is good to have money and the things that money can buy, but it's good too, to check up once in a while and make sure you haven't lost the things money can't buy” a quote by George Horace Lorimer. This quote is trying to say that money can gain material items like clothes, a car, and a house. These are great because they are items that are wanted and maybe need to survive. However, make sure you still keep the stuff that money cannot buy, such as love and happiness. Fitzgerald is saying that money cannot buy all that is wanted. He shows this throughout the novel, The Great Gatsby. He explains this by saying money can provide material items, but cannot provide immaterial items. He also states that money cannot make you happy all the time. The...

We are planted on the path of school and over the years it gradually directs our minds to pursue a profession in which to make a living. Society also sets the norm, from advertisements of expensive products to celebrities and wealthy role models, we become to think that financial success is the source of all happiness. Almost all goods and services can be acquired with wealth so there is a reason why we are driven towards money. Many believe the sole reason for wealth is to bring happiness and to fulfill the things you enjoy. What is not known is that there is a limit to money’s power to provide happiness. There is a point in which financial success no longer provides happiness. As we build up finances we acquire the necessities and even extra needs and wants in life that do provide happiness, but beyond a certain point, we begin feeling pressured to achieve more. Money brings happiness when we are starting along, building up to financial stability. When we start from nothing to something we understand that the money is rewarding. Our needs and wants are being fulfilled giving a sense of accomplishment as well as enjoyment of the item or service received through money. You can see it when a child gets a toy that they want. They nag or gesture signifying their want for it. They are working...

Money Doesn't Buy Happiness

...Can Money Buy Happiness? Does your current work satisfy you? Really? On what levels? When you examine your long-term priorities, do you feel that happiness is more important than money? Many of us fall into a particular line of work by accident. We learn of a job opening through a friend or we accept a new job that offers higher pay. We stay with a job because of the benefits or because we believe we don't have any options for anything better. Staying with a job merely because we've found a level of comfort there through familiar faces, routine tasks or a level of salary that we can survive on doesn't mean we've found what can ensure a lifetime of happiness. Many with a college degree who restricted their vision to openings only within their field of expertise have discovered that. Yet, you might be surprised to learn that the percentage of people who are actually working in the field they specifically received a degree in is quite small. In most cases, we major in that which we believe offers the greatest opportunity for success at the time. Newspapers report a severe shortage of engineers and suddenly many of those intent on success major in engineering. Or teaching. Or law. It becomes the 'soup of the day' syndrome. We spend four or more years studying a field and, with the cost involved, we assure ourselves we truly love this avocation. Five or ten years down the road, we discover it's lost its allure. But we allow whatever perks and salary we've achieved to convince...
