Both the Mongols and the Ottoman Turks took long and strenuous journeys to conquer the lands they ruled.The Mongols, in the 13th century, had the largest empire ever built with most of Asia, the Middle East and some of Europe combined. The Ottoman Turks, in the 14th century, had a large empire in the Middle East. Both groups had a motive or need to move out and conquer new lands, some for survival needs and other selfish ones. The two groups also had very different ways of conquering these lands,some terrifying ways and others using highly trained men. It took a multitude of things for the Mongols to need to go and conquer all those lands. Most everyone, if anyone, they conquered had none of this within their armies. They would go city to city and tell them to surrender or die. Most cities then had large walls around their cities and laughed when the Mongols gave them that choice. This was a huge mistake on the cities part. Days later the Mongols would break down the walls, using cannons and gunpowder which came from the Chinese they already conquered, and charge the city. The Mongols did this to Baghdad in 1258 when they refused to surrender, they killed everyone but a few people. These people were not set free unharmed either, they usually had their hands cut off or blinded, or both. They were then set out and excepted to tell their tales of woe to other cities so when the Mongols came to them they would surrender
