Anything worth mentioning to the audience is drawn out in a rather explicit detailing of whatever it attempts to deliver. Characters and situations leave nothing omitted for the audience, leaving little room for speculation on discrepancies. In an effort to break free from this centuries-old style of writing, McCarthy instead turns toward a simpler style of writing, which compresses nearly all elements into its original form. He employs a narrative that uses barebones content and simple characters to convey the plot effectively. This novel in particular explores the morality of the characters and how that morality is narrated, and employs archetypes and modes of narration that are generally used in folklore (Cooper). By evoking the folklore style, McCarthy emulates the morality-plays of the Medieval Era, an unusual choice considering the setting of the story and the relatively recent date of publication (Cooper). Explicitness is omitted, and much of the simple run-on sentences tell the action instead of some overanalyzed detail. Instead, McCarthy relies on an implicit system, where much of the details lie in what the action and simple descriptions imply. ...Eugene O’Neill wrote a play called the Hairy Ape that focuses on the time period in America during the industrial revolution. The play follows a man, Yank, searching for how he fits into the world. The themes of the play revolve around how the United States was changing during this crucial moment in America’s history. New ideas, technologies and cultures were emerging, and O’Neill saw this. He wanted to express his views and opinions of how America was changing through his plays. His plays became influential and powerful because it focused on real-life issues and problems that were occurring during that time, even though the plays were fictional stories. The Hairy Ape is no exception and is one of many of his fantastic plays that delved into the dark reality that was occurring in post WWI America. O’Neill opens his play with a scene showing some firemen working in the engine room of a ship talking amongst each other. This scene is important because it already shows a major topic that O’Neill is tackling: the transformation of humans into “machines” by industrialization. The firemen work in a harsh and monotonous environment; they repeat the same task over and over without putting any thought into it. They are also shown as uneducated, primitive and uncivilized people. Historians often describe themselves as detectives, seeking out a kind of truth among the conflicting evidence of the past. There is, furthermore, a large and growing subgenre of historical crime fiction. From C.J. Sansom to Philip Pullman, from Orhan Pamuk to Walter Mosley, from Ellis Peters to Boris Akunin, novelists have been keen to use the past as a backdrop for their stories of detection and mystery. The most famous historical detective might be Brother William of Baskerville in Umberto Eco’s peerless The Name of the Rose (Il nome della rosa, 1980). Recently we have seen a flowering of historical crime fiction as the subgenre attains maturity and becomes increasingly popular and innovative. Jason Goodwin, Philip Kerr and Susan Hill were all shortlisted for the prestigious Crime Writers Association Dagger this year (recent historical winners include Arianna Franklin, Jake Arnott and Craig Russell).
