An industry shrouded in mystery, cover ups, legal battles, and filled with a host of other less-than-savory practices and procedures, the food industry in America has caused quite the conundrum. Being powered by a few large corporations, it remains one of the most monopolized industries to this day. Although food is such a big part of the American lifestyle, very few citizens actually know how their food is grown, farmed, or processed, much less the unethical and hidden practices of the companies behind it. These practices have lead to many problems within the food industry, and are slowly becoming worse and worse. Among their arsenal are products such as genetically modified corn and soy, the seeds of which they sell to farmers. As they slowly buy out the seed supply industry, they in turn gain the upper hand over every other corporation in the industry. Their power and control is multinational, and if nothing is done to restrict them, Monsanto could become the sole supplier of food in the foreseeable…show more content… When farmers have reused seed in subsequent years after purchasing it, Monsanto has been particularly aggressive towards them and filed lawsuits, claiming that the reuse of their seeds is unfair to their business. Because of the excessive use of their seeds, it is also very hard for farmers to make sure none of their seeds are ‘contaminated’ with the engineered seeds. If their seed does end up being contaminated, this gives Monsanto the ability to use the numerous resources at their disposal to take legal action against said farmers.
