As with the methods of preservation and rehabilitation, restoration allows modern modifications; however, the installment of these modifications must meet present safety and building codes. Once a southern plantation and home to President James Madison, Montpelier is an illustration of a building that went through one of the most extraordinary restoration processes of the twenty-first century. In the early nineteen hundreds, the house was bought by William DuPont adding rooms, bathrooms, and even changing the original roof of the house. Along with this DuPont also changed the historical grounds that surrounded the house landscaped during the time Madison resided. DuPont added additional buildings, horse stables, and horse track to the grounds.

It advanced its social mission in many ways, such as by committing 7.5% of its profits to a charitable foundation; conducting in-store voter registration; and buying ingredients from suppliers who employed disadvantaged populations.4 Ben & Jerry’s founders, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, held out their double bottom line approach (they called it the “double-dip”) as a model for others who wished to “Lead With [their] Values and Make Money, Too.”5 * Professor of Law at Indiana University School of Law—Indianapolis. ** Professor of Law at Indiana University School of Law—Indianapolis and Professor of Philanthropic Studies at the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy. † Thanks to the organizers of the symposium “Corporate Creativity: The Vermont L3C & Other...
